Hello, I response to a query back in 1999, I am posting some information re: the family line of Charles Darius Thompson, b. March 18, 1853. His parents were E.C. (Edward Charles) Thompson and Prudence Belden Overturf, who married July 4, 1852, Higginsport, Brown Co., OH. Edward Charles Thompson was b. April 17, 1833 in CT (probably Cromwell, formerly the north society of Middletown). He was the son of Gaylord H. Thompson, of Middletown, CT and Chloe Stevens who married November 1, 1827 in Wethersfield, CT In researching the Thompson family of Madison, CT, I was looking at the land transactions and saw this item: Volume 2, p. 165- 170. November 1829 and received for record April 4, 1832 power of attorney for Samuel Lynn of Durham to act as power of attorney for David and Melorah Lynn of Durham, Appleton and Harriet Stevens of Middletown, Gaylord H. Thompson of Middletown, Elijah and Florinda Stevens of Wethersfield, Asenath Dayton of Durham, Barron D. Thompson of Madison, and Charles Thompson of Durham. (Not listed are: Asher, d. 1823; Nicholas, d. unk). Samuel Lynn to act on their behalf on a 1 1/2 acre parcel of land lying in the East part of Madison bounded North partly by land belonging to wife of Samuel Parmelee and partly of Timothy Hill, West of Timothy Hill, South by highway, east by land formerly of David Thompson. Those mentioned above Quit Claimed the land for $20 to Samuel Lynn. (Note: Melorah, Harriet, Elijah, Asenath, Barron and Charles were all siblings. They were the children of David Thompson who died in 1828. Only 2 of David's children do not appear: Nicholas, no further info; and Asher, who died July 24, 1823, CT) (Note 2: Recently published article re: David Thompson in the CT Nutmegger, September, 2010 p. 174-178) In working on the children of David Thompson, I had never run across Gaylord H. Thompson before, so I went to Middletown, CT to lookup him up. Unfortunately, there were no vital records on him. There were several land transactions for Gaylord and his wife Chloe showing they purchased land in the Cromwell section of Middletown. Gaylord's first purchase was on February 16, 1828 and Chloe's first purchase was on Sept. 1, 1832. Gaylord's last purchase was on July 8, 1839 (vol 68, p. 382) -Gaylord H. Thompson of Middletown purchased 15 acres, No. Society including the undivided half of the Brickyard, machines, timbers, boards and all other moveable property from Joseph Edwards for $375. I then went to the probate office, where only one line appeared to provide the clue needed to verify my suspicion: Middletown, CT Probate Record, Vol 13, p. 163 July 19, 1825 Zenas Edwards is chosen by this court appointment guardian to Gaylord Thompson a minor son of Asher Thompson dec(ease)d. My other research findings/notes on this line include: 1830 United States Federal Census - appears married with son and daughter Name: Gaylord Thompson (only one Gaylord Thompson listed) Home in 1830: Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut Free White Persons - Males - Under 5: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 5 thru 9: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29: 1 Total Free White Persons: 4 Date: 1836-10-08; Paper: Patriot and Eagle Middletown Democratic Ticket elected: Gaylord Thompson - Constable (1 of 8) 1840 United States Federal Census - appears married with 3 sons and 1 daughter Name: Gaylord Thompson (only 1 Gaylord Thompson listed) Township: Middletown Ward 1 County: Middlesex State: Connecticut Free White Persons - Males - Under 5: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 30 thru 39: 1 Free White Persons - Females - Under 5: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29: 1 In 1850, we find Chloe Thompson and her children in Higginsport, OH: (can not locate Gaylord in 1850 as of yet, or deceased) 1850 United States Federal Census about Chloe Thompson (listed with 3 sons and 1 daughter - matches 1840 census count, except for husband Gaylord) Name: Chloe Thompson Age: 43 Estimated birth year: abt 1807 Birth Place: Connecticut Gender: Female Home in 1850 (City,County,State):town of Higginsport Lewis township, Brown, Ohio Family Number: 437 Chloe Thompson 43 - Innkeeper **** (her and kids all b. Chloe Stevens in Wethersfield, listed in a family tree as the Gaylord Thompson who was born in Peru, MA on January 24, 1807. This Gaylord was the son of William Thompson and Fannie Starr. Since none of the census records for Gaylord Thompson of Higginsport, OH or Competine, IA, this family line posting is in error. I am still searching for the death information on Gaylord Thompson and his wife Chloe Stevens. If anyone has additional information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Tracy Thompson Tomaselli Guilford, CT
