I have been following this thread for ages now and whilst it does have a lot of traffic it hasn't achieved much at all. I also think Michael T would like to see and end to this thread. I strongly recommend anyone who has an interest in the Thompson history to join the site 'Clan Thompson' and pool our combined knowledge. Following the destruction of the Four Courts Archives in Dublin in 1922 Ireland effectively lost a thousand years of records. The only way we are going to get information earlier than 1800 is either by crystalising what we collectively have or by DNA research. The macro history places most Thompsons in or arround Ulster going back to the time of Elizabeth 1st. Some two hundred years of Englands interest in Ireland as a probable beachhead for invaders. >From various programmes Ireland was deliberately repopulated with Scotts and Enghlish. Thompson now being one of the most prominant surnames in Northern Ireland with the silent 'p' in our name being most probably acquired from English record keeping. I am happy to share what I have uncovered over the past few years and I have found the 'Clan Thompson' people to be most helpful and possessed of considerable knowledge of Thompson History. Kind Regards, Russell Thompson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
