Have you considered yDNA testing? There is a large Thompson project on Family Tree DNA (ftDNA) and doing the Y-DNA would probably help you find what line you belong in. Check out: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Thompson ; Go with at least 25 markers, but 37 is much better. 12 is useless. Let me know if you have any questions. BTW my Thompson line is from north GA, but there were several Thompson lines in GA. I don't immediately know of any Columbus GA connections. Good luck. Don't give up.
