Author: pattoncarter Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/19280.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think you meant that AHS was your great great grandfather, right? I knew your grandmother Rosa Lee and all of her sisters and brothers...even worked with Lonnie surveying once. I saw Loie just a few years ago before she passed away. These were all my mom's first cousins. We even had a Thompson Reunion for a long time where many of Aunt Kitty and Maw Maw Belle's kids and grandkids came (Kitty and Belle were sisters, daughters of AHS and Mary Virginia). AHS's dad was John Davis Thompson. He had a brother named James Henry Thompson, who was a preacher. They were both born before 1810 in northeastern Kentucky. I think the whole family moved to Indiana at some point, but the two brothers, at least, came to Mississippi in the first half of the 1840's. I can't remember if they brought wives and any family with them or that all happened here. AHS was born in 1845 in Mississippi, so whatever happened was before then. AHS did fight in the Civil War and my Aunt Dorothy said a few years ago she remembers seeing his uniform. I've always wondered how John D. Thompson, being from KY and IN met Susan Howe, from Massachusetts. BTW, Rev. James H. Thompson is buried in Leaf, Cemetery, near Mclain, MS, near his brother's parents-in-law, A.K. Fairley and Sarah Breland Fairley. I've seen James's grave many times, but I don't know where John D. is buried....probably there...but unmarked. I've also been to AHS's grave many times. He's buried in the Hintonville Cemetery, in Perry Co. Do you know any of the history of the Thompsons going back to PA and Ireland and Scotland? I guess we would be considered second cousins once removed...me actually being second cousins with your parent. This is my lineage: Pat Carter < Evelyn Hinton < Isabelle Thompson < AHS Thompson < John D. 1. [THOMPSON] Elizabeth Thompson and a link to the Rumsey family of Suffolk?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: vr120 Surnames: Thompson, Sawyer Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/19654/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A direct of ancestor of mine was Elizabeth Thompson who married John Sawyer in Hackney in 1834. John originated from Debenham, in Suffolk, and Elizabeth was born in London "City Road". But I have a note from my grandfather that Elizabeth was a "descendant of the Rumsey family of Debenham". Does anyone know anything about this? There were a few Rumseys in Debenham, but I can't find any link to a Thompson family. I don't know who Elizabeth's parents were - there are several candidates but nothing conclusive. Does anyone know ANYTHING about her?! Any help would be most gratefully received. Author: Jmdenk05 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/19280.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes. AHS Thompson was my great grandfather. I am originally from Perry County. My grandmother was Rosa Lee Clifton Matthews. Her mother was his daughter Catherine Kitty Thompson. . She told me that he was from a very educated family with a brother and or uncle who was a professor at University perhaps in Indiana. They called him Alphabet. He told stories of his civil war days as well. There is an 1860 census that show his dad John Davis and a J H Thompson household. I assume they were brothers. I always wondered why they would come down south. Considering his mother eats from a prominent family in Mass. Wondered if it caused conflict during civil war. Would be wonderful to know wouldn't it? Thanks. Would love to know more info if you have any tidbits. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SDUNAVAN Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/19649/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have information on John M. Thompson (listed as John M. Thomson in 1870 census), who is living in Anoka, Anoka Co., Minnesota in 1880? In the census it says he was the Chief of Police then - living with his wife Carrie M. (nee Teller, soon to be the notorious Carrie Hosford) and daughter Carrie E. Thompson. His wife (widow?) is living in a boarding house in Minneapolis a few years later, and I'd love to know if this is because she separated or divorced John M., or if he died.
