My great-grandfather is Lee Calvin Thompson (B. Oct 10, 1917 D. Feb 4, 1950). He fought in World War II. Sadly, he died in a car accident near Fort Sill in 1950. His mother's name is Mary McNeely. His father's name is a mystery. He spent his entire life trying to find information about his father, but his mother would only say that he "disappeared". Does anyone know who his father was? Hello, I just looked your book up on Amizon.com. "The Wooden Bible" lists James the Lame Thompson in the index at the back of the book, on pages 64-76. There are 20 used copies available for $13.24 each. Hope this helps. I am interested, but budgets are tight right now and I need to make sure I don't buy what does not relate to my tree. I've seen several trees online that show James "The Lame" as the father of William Thompson (abt 1794 - abt 1880). I can find no documentation in any of these trees. Is there anything about William in the book? He married Catherine Moorhead and they had 6 children. I'll happily buy the book if it pertains to our family, but I've gone down too many deadends and cannot afford to do it again. Thanks for whatever help you can give. Perhaps your Robert's SSN is 256-18-3398 - which lists his death date as 1973 in Gwinnett Co. Try to find a copy of the death certificate which usually lists the names of the parents or spouse. I don't find those names or connections in my tree at the moment but that is certainly no guarantee that they are not part of my line. There are almost as many Thompsons in north GA as there are Smiths. I have traced one line back to VA and one back to PA. Mine seems to go back to John Thompson, a hatter's apprentice in Philadelphia and a Revolutionary Soldier who migrated to NC, married Christiana Redwine, daughter of a German immigrant (Reidwyl) from PA, and then moved to Madison, GA. Had son, John Thompson, who married Nancy Scarborough (dau of Frederick Scarborough) and lived in Clarke County, GA. Son Fredric Thompson left Clarke, GA and moved to Paulding, GA right before the Civil War. Other siblings remained in Clarke County, while at least one moved to Arkansas (descendants in TX). Others may have moved around in GA. My ggGrandfather Harrison Thompson from Paulding died in Civil War when my gGrandfather, Frederick Porter Thompson, was only about 5 years old. Paulding is where most of my close Thompson line remained more or less until 1900s. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Don't give up yet. I look specifically at WWII Military service on Ancestry and found what appear to be two Robert Samuel Thompsons. The first had a Service Number of 413-53-35 which I assume to be a SSN. The 413 SSN series was/is issued in Tennessee. This record has Robert Samuel Thompson enlisting on 11 Oct 1940 and first received onboard on 18 Oct 1940 with a ranking of USNR SK3cV6 (maybe a Navy man can tell you what this means). The second are several muster rolls for a Robert Samuel Thompson on the Yorktown (CV10) from 30 Nov 1944 to 25 Mar 1945. His SSN 234-33-33 and his rating on the first muster is ARM2c and on the last is ARM2c (CA). The 234 SSN series is from West Virginia. Perhaps with these SSNs you can figure out whether one of these is our father and trace down some more information about him.
