This is certainly confusing. I do not remember where I got that information on John. I do remember talking to someone years ago about Thompson information. I'll check and see if I can find correspondence or something. I want to fix any mistakes I have or add to my information. I have a Mary Patton married to the brother of Hugh Thompson. There again, I need to search and see where I got that info. I'm pretty sure the wife of Hugh is Eleanor Atkinson. I have seen that information on the net too, and do not know where that comes from. This is getting too confusing for me. :) Anyway, I will leave you 2 generations gen. report here just to see what exactly I have. I need to copy your reply and print it out so I can study it a little more. One thing I know for sure is the bottom 2. My ancestor Jane Thompson who married Bryce Russell and Andrew Leeper who married Jane's sister. One thing I would love to find out is which Leeper Elinor married. No such son was named in Hugh's will. I just did a search on the internet, and nothing came-up claiming that Hugh had such a son (but if you have evidence of such a son, please let me know what that evidence is.....who do you show that this John Thompson married)? I did find a couple of charts on World Connect in RootsWeb that claim that Hugh Thompson's wife was a Margaret Appleton. Do you have any idea what the source is for that? William Thompson (died circa-1781, as I recall; apparent brother of Hugh Thompson) and his wife Jane/Jean Unknown had a son named John Thompson. That John Thompson married Margaret Means, and they had James (who married Rebecca Gay), Thomas (who married unknown and who had a daughter named Margaret), Edward and Robert (who married an Agnes Unknown and who had children of their own who were named John, Agness, Robert, and two daughters whose names are not known). Other children of William and Jane/Jean (Unknown) Thompson were William (married Mary Patton), Alexander (married Margaret Sprouel), Robert (married Elinor Unknown), Agnes (married James Edmundson), Rebecca (married Mr. McNeeley) and Sarah (married Mr. Hendry). The James Thompson (died about 1773 and left a will; he lived in the Borden's Grant area of Augusta Co., VA) who I believe was the oldest son of the Matthew Thompson (died about 1753; Matthew was married to a Martha Unknown) married a Mary Unknown, and per his will in 1773, they had children named Mary, Joseph, Catrin, Margaret (married a Mr. Hall), Elizabeth (married a Mr. Ward), Matthew (baptized at Tinkling Springs Church in 1747 by his father), John and William. We now have six male Davidson DNA donors who match/closely match in Family 3. www.davidsongenes.org I just thought of a fifth Davidson/Thompson "connection." There was a John Thompson (apparently born circa-1720s) who was married to a Martha Davidson, and they had a daughter who married a Mr. Arbuckle. I suspect that this John Thompson was one of the sons of Matthew Thompson (his 1753 Augusta Co., VA will mentioned sons named Matthew "Junior," William and John....plus it strongly appears that there was another/oldest son who was named James Thompson who was already "well-established" when his father died.....this 1753 will also mentioned a daughter named Margaret Thompson, but it is POSSIBLE, I guess, that she was actually a daughter-in-law, since the will stated that she had five children). We do not know to which Davidson family the above Martha Davidson (wife of John Thompson) belonged. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/8020.2.1.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I should have stated in my earlier post that I see no reason to believe that the Thompsons in Montgomery/Carroll Co., VA were related to the Thompsons in Augusta/Rockbridge Co., VA....but anything is possible. In any case, any living male Thompson/Thomson who does not have a proven/known male Thompson relative in the Thompson/Thomson DNA project should certainly join that project: http://www.thompsonfamilies.org/ By the way, there is yet a third known Davidson/Thompson "connection." A William Davidson married a Martha Baker, and they were from the Buckingham/Prince Edward Co., VA area. They moved to Botetourt Co., VA around 1774 (the part of that county that became part of Rockbridge Co., VA in 1778). Martha Baker was the daughter of Douglas Baker and his wife Jane Thompson, and this Jane Thompson was a daughter of Reverend John Thom(p)son who came to VA from PA (as stated in my last e-mail). Around 1781, William and Martha (Baker) Davidson sold their home, that was by then in Rockbridge Co., VA, to a John Thompson, and that John Thompson later willed that home to his apparent son Thomas Thompson. This particular Thompson family appears to have been from the family of the Matthew Thompson who left a will in Augusta Co., VA in 1753. I don't know whether or not the above sale might be a clue that Matthew Thompson's family was related to Reverend John Thom(p)son's family, versus i! f this home sale by a William Davidson (who had married a descendant of Rev. John Thom(p)son) to this John Thompson in Rockbridge Co., VA was just a coincidence. A fourth Davidson/Thompson "connection" involved John Davidson (born 1757) who married Mary Thompson, daughter of a Joseph and Mary (Wright) Thompson, in 1787. This John Davidson was a son of an earlier John Davidson (died 1762 in Augusta Co., VA, and this older John Davidson was married to an Elizabeth Maben or Houston). This older John Davidson was the son of a Robert Davidson (born late-1600s) and his wife Ann (maybe/probably Ann Dunlap, per some researchers). Unfortunately, we have no known DNA donor from this Robert/John Davidson family at this time. There is nothing to suggest that any of the four Davidson families mentioned in my posts were related to one another. As a matter of fact, it strongly appears that the above William Davidson was a member of MY overall Davidson family, and I am in Family 10 on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA website (and as stated previously, two of the other Davidson families with "Thompson connections" are part of Family 1 and Family 3 on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA website). The above Joseph Thompson, however, appears to have been yet another member of the Matthew Thompson family of Augusta/Rockbridge Co., VA. We do have a couple of DNA donors from the family of this Matthew Thompson, via one of his sons who was named Matthew Thompson, Junior. As far as I can tell, however, we have no DNA donors from the William/Hugh Thompson family of Augusta Co., VA, the Reverend John Thom(p)son family of Amelia/Prince Edward Co., VA, nor from the Thompson family in Montgomery/Carroll Co., VA (but I have not performed a complete search of the Thompson DNA website to confirm this). Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/8020.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My records show that Hugh Thompson (lost his mind and died about 1757) married Eleanor Unknown, and they had Eleanor (nothing known about any possible husband), James (who married Jane Unknown), Mary (nothing known about any possible husband), Jane (married Andrew Leeper) and a daughter who married Bryce Russell. I show that a James Leeper and his wife Margaret (POSSIBLY Margaret Thompson) had several children, including sons named Nicholas Leeper (who married Mary Unknown) and the above Andrew Leeper (who married Jane Thompson, daughter of Hugh and Eleanor Thompson). Nicholas and Mary (Unknown) Leeper had a son named John Leeper (who married Elizabeth Davidson). Andrew Leeper and his wife Jane (also shown as Jean) Thompson had a son named Hugh Leeper (who married Martha Davidson). Surprisingly, these two Davidson women were apparently from two different/unrelated Davidson families (see Family 1 and Family 3 on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA testing project website: www.davidsongenes.org). I show that that Hugh Thompson was a brother of William Thompson (who married a Jane Unknown). William Thompson provided land for Thinkling Springs Church in Augusta/Rockbridge Co., VA. This William and Hugh Thompson may or may not have been related to the Matthew Thompson who left a will in Augusta Co., VA in 1753, and this William and Hugh Thompson may or may not have been related to the Reverend John Thom(p)son who came to Amelia/Prince Edward Co., VA from PA and who preached at the above church on occasion. Note: The families of Matthew Thompson and William Thompson have to be carefully researched in order that they not be "intermixed" in research. They each had several children. Unfortunately, it appears that the Thompson DNA testing project has living male Thompson DNA donors from the above Matthew Thompson family, but not from the families of the above William/Hugh Thompson and Reverend John Thom(p)son. It sure would be nice to compare DNA from all three of these families. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you will contact me at joyce_jackson61@yahoo.com I will send you an invite to my tree. I have family sources through a family Bible up to James (1794) in Virginia, USA. The rest is from other folks in Ancestry. If I am correct on the oldest line my James (1698) married a Mary Towes in Yorkshire and they immigrated to American and settled in Virginia. I would love to go further back and see if and when he came from Scotland. My Dad always said he was Scotish. When you receive the invitation just start with the "home person" and continue to click on the Thompsons. You will find Peter the most interesting (click on his story). I intend to write a story connecting the line when I get through with my searching. You will also find interesting information under James (1698) "Historical Information". It seems they bought and sold a lot of land in the mountains of Virginia. This is a simply bea! utiful mountain area. It looks like they first fought the Indians and then John his son was in the Revoluntionary War. Later they moved to Illionis and then my clan settled in Missouri where I was born. Yes, they were a very tight family and usually a large family. My Dad had 8 siblings. His parents died very early and he raised himself as a bell hop in a local hotel. My line was very tight with the Bledsoe family and some Fugates from Virginia. They moved around together and married within the Bledsoe and Fugate families. All of this has been researched well. What I don't have is the English history. I would love to be able to find the immigration papers or boat that James and Mary came across in. I am still hunting that. Good to hear from you. Let me know if I can help in any way. I would like to see your tree also. Joyce Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
