We seem to run into brick walls but then we find a loose brick. All I had to start was a couple of 1860 to 1880 letters and my dad saying Irish descent and Lunenburg Co. Found GGGgranfather before anyone else but I wrote it down. I copy all Thompson marriage records up to certain years as I go courthouse to courthouse because I have not found them yet. Did find an interesting will in Mecklenburg; had the right name. If you know of a Randolph(Randal) or a Benjamin let me know. Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/7605.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Jan, It took me 10 years to discover the maiden name of Sarah born 1841 in Virginia, parent's born in Virginia. I hade a family legend that my Thompson line was connected to the Forsyth family of Virginia. On all census from 1870 until 1880 Sarah listed her year of birth as 1841. I could never find a marriage record for Joseph S. Thompson born 1839 in baltimore to a Sarah in any of the surrounding Virginia counties. I then diceded to search out side of Virginia that's where I found a reference to Hagerstown, Maryland. I then called the Hargerstown Library and they sent me an actual copy of the 1865 newspaper with their weding announcement It listed Joseph S. Thompson of Baltimore and Sarah Forsyth of Warren County, Virginia. Searched the 1850 Warren County, Virginia Census. Sarah was listed with her parent's but she was born not in 1841 but 1832. Oh, those grandma's and their younger men. Tom Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am looking for the families of Charley Elmer Carter and Bertha Ander Buckingham and Charley's sisters: Bernice and Ida Carter. I am a descendant of Clara Carter (Charley's other sister.) I have come to a rough spot in my research. I believe that Charley and Clara's mother, Charlotte was married to a William Barkes before she married John W. Carter. I also think her parents are Alfred and Julia Thompson, but I am uncertain. I know also that her son from William Barker (or Barkes) is James Barkes who was found in the 1930 Census in Multnomah, Oregan. These Carters also lived in Washington State for a time. I do not think Robert Thompson had 18 children. He was a school teacher and ran his own school in his house in Castle Street, Lisburn. 18 children probably refers to the number of children in his school. He had 8 known offspring. 2. William Thompson (1822 - 31 Oct 1842) was the son of a William Thompson and not Robert Thompson. (Ref: Those Hallowed Grounds, Vol 2. Published by the Lisburn Branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society in 2005.) 3. Jane Thompson died in Castle Street, Belfast. Her death notice in the Belfast News-letter of Wednesday 26 March 1851 reads: THOMPSON March 23, at the residence of her brother, Castle-street, Belfast, Jane, second daughter of Robert Thompson, Castle-street, Lisburn. She was buried in the Friends Burying Ground, Railway St, Lisburn. 4. Robert Thompson of Richardson Sons & Owden, was living at 2 Wilmont Terrace, Lisburn Road, Belfast in 1861 (Ref: Street Directory) and he probably bought Walton in Fortwilliam Park around 1861 or very soon afterwards. So his children born in or before 1861 would not have been born at Walton. Incidently Wilmont Terrace still stands and is an attractive Victorian terrace on the Lisburn Road, adjacent to the City Hospital and is now used as offices.
