He died in the Poor House in Farnborough, Kent in 1852. How or why he moved from Gloucestershire, I have no idea, but on the way he acquired a wife Sarah born in Eynsford, Kent not too far from Farnborough. Hi All, I am researching Thompson's Ireland to Canada. My family immigrated to Ontario, Canada about 1853 from Armagh?, Ireland. My Joseph Thompson was married to Isabella Rutherford. They settled in Mono Township. Joseph was born about 1800 and Isabella was born about 1820. Joseph's father was probably John, and Joseph had at least 2 brothers immigrate also, to the same area. I know this is sketchy and that is why I need help. Who are my Thompson's and Who are my Rutherfords. From Joseph and Isabella's roots in Canada I am fine but their pre-Canada years are lost to our family. Any help is appreciated. Since there's WARDELL & MonmouthCo connections, I think you should look at the descendants of Cornelius THOMPSON, surfaced from Scotland by 1700 in Freehold,MonmouthCo NJ...and some of his descendants married WARDELLs--Wardell is a common surname in the county;like me, most of us descend from Eliakim &Lydia (Perkins)Wardell who settled in (now) Rumson near LongBranch (where many were life-savers&worked for wrecking companies).Eliakim's brotherSamuel Waddell(Wardell/Wardwell) was hanged sadly for "witchcraft" in AndoverMA (see Salem Trials account);& wifeLydia is the subject of new book (THE NAKED QUAKER)--once banished to NJ, they lead quiet lives as Quakers. Eliakim was 1st Sheriff of Monmouth Co. Your Wardell history in NewEngland's 1600s & Monmouth CoNJ's 1700-1800s is an interesting one--and well documented. I think, you may be connected to Cornelius Thom(p)son (as I am)-a good genealogy is THE STONE HOUSE THOMPSONs (at MCHS! Library in Freehold,NJ)--big family. Let me know if you think these are your families;I'll look up at NEHGS next time I'd down there--i.e.:Late-1800s article in NYBG register about the Wardells rescuing Germans from a shipwreck off LongBranch gives a nice account of that family, along with some Wardell photos from late 1800s. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RIP_08 Surnames: Thompson Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/17218/mb.ashx Message Board Post: IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 0344-08 April 25, 2008 Missing WWII Airmen are Identified The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of 11 U.S. servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors. They are (see link for complete release) Pvt. Joseph Thompson, of Compton, Calif; all U.S. Army Air Forces. The dates and locations of the funerals are being set by their families. Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men in their hometowns to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army. On Dec. 3, 1943, these men crewed a B-24D Liberator that departed Dobodura, New Guinea, on an armed-reconnaissance mission over New Hanover Island in the Bismarck Sea. The crew reported dropping their bombs on target, but in spite of several radio contacts with their base, they never returned to Dobodura. Subsequent searches failed to locate the aircraft. In 2000, three Papua New Guineans were hunting in the forest when they came across aircraft wreckage near Iwaia village. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) was notified and began planning an investigation. In 2002, a JPAC team traveled to Deboin Village to interview two individuals who said they knew where the crash site was. However, the witnesses could not relocate the site. In 2004, the site was found about four miles from Iwaia village in Papua New Guinea where a JPAC team found an aircraft data plate that correlated to the 1943 crash. Between 2004 and 2007, JPAC teams conducted two excavations of the site and recovered human remains and non-biological material including some crew-related artifacts such as identification tags. Among dental records, other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of the remains. For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.
