I descend from Thomas S. Neal who married Nancy Thompson in 1822 in Warren Co., NC.? I am interested in finding the parents of Nancy Thompson.? She was born circa 1804 in Virginia according to the 1850 Warren Co., NC Census.? I also don't know the parents of Thomas S. Neal.? He was born circa 1795 also in Virginia.? The only Neal Family in Warren Co., NC during the 1820 Census with a son the right age to be my Thomas is that of Cuthbert Neal.? Cuthbert was from Brunswick Co., VA.? Any help on either of these families would be appreciated. Thanks!!! Charlie Rathbun Jasper, GA
If anyone spots a George Washington Thompson, or George, or Washington, or G.W. Thompson who would have been born, maybe in Kentucky, 1827-1833, please let me know. I know there are many of them, but this is my brick wall. My G.W. Thompson married Lucy Wilson, whose family was in Owen/Scott/Franklin/Woodford Co., KY area in the 1850-1890 timeframe. George and Lucy Thompson appear in the Pike Co., Illinois census in 1860 with 2 children, the younger of whom was born in Illinois. They then appear as "Washington" and Lucy Thompson in the 1870 Census of Daviess Co., KY, with 6 children (saying all born in Kentucky). Lucy appears in a Scott Co., KY newspaper article in the 1880's that said she was visiting relatives but was from "Missouri." Lucy died of consumption not long after that and then all their children died (probably of consumption) except the two oldest - J.J. Thompson of Scott Co., and Sarah Thompson Finnie (wife of Mark Finnie) of Midway, Woodford Co., KY. I have not found any record of a marriage of George and Lucy or any family for George or any record of him before 1860. The census ages vary widely (not unusual) and the older children were not sure if they were born in Kentucky or Illinois. Based on childrens' ages, George and Lucy should have married about 1855. There was some speculation that George was from Daviess Co., KY, but the Thompson researchers there can't connect him. If it helps, Lucy was (I think) the daughter of George W. and Adell/Delia (unk) Wilson of Owen Co., KY. Any help or thoughts about how to uncover George would be welcome. Thanks, Doug

My GG Grandfather, William Terrell Thompson, was born in 1824 in Jackson County, Alabama. His siblings were Minerva (b. ca 1823), Andrew J. (b. 1829), Rachel (b. ca 1831), and Robert F. (b. ca 1833) His father, John Thompson, was born in Ireland, ca 1798 - based on information in the Tuscaloosa census reports of 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. Since there are no census reports from 1890, I assume that he died after 1880 - in Tuscaloosa. His wife was Hannah Eddy, b. 1796, South Carolina. They married in 1822. She appeared on the census reports with her husband through 1870, but did not appear in 1880, so I assume that she died after 1870 - in Tuscaloosa. They married in 1822. Their first child, Minerva, was born ca 1823 in Alabama. This tells me that sometime after 1798, when John was born in Ireland, and 1822, when they married, he came to America - and to Alabama fairly soon after. His parents' names may be David Thompson and Jane ?? I have often wondered where William Terrell Thompson got his middle name. The name Terrell continued to be used in the family in later generations. Obvious candidates for Terrell (or Terrill) would be the last name of John's mother, Jane ??, or of Hannah Eddy's mother, Rachael?? I've tried these paths to brick walls. However, in the 1850 census, there were two other families living with John and Hannah Thompson. One was the family of Allen and Jane (Melton) Stoker, with five children aged 15 and younger. They were no longer with the Thompsons in 1860, but Allen Stoker's mother, Elizabeth, was now living with them. The other family in 1850 was William H (Higgins) Terrill and his daughter, Sarah L. I have found that William Higgins Terrill was married to Cynthia Eddy - could she be the sister of Hannah Eddy? Well, that is the mystery. Does anyone on the list connect with this Thompson family? Do you know who the Stoker family is? Do you know how the Terrell/Terrill name joins the Thompson family? I am new to this list, so I searched the archives first, but did not find any links. If the topic has already been discussed, please point me in the right direction. If it hasn't been discussed, I hope to find a new cousin who has new information!! This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: fostersp Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/7803.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Genealogy often takes some strange twists. On March 5, 2008, my wife and I were researching Spurlocks at the Carnegie Library in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama, and we came across information that I had not seen on websites or published. In the book, Obituaries From Barbour County, Alabama, Newspapers 1890-1905, compiled by Helen Sylvester Foley, page 79, was the following entry: Eufaula Times and News, Thursday, December 20, 1900. "Mrs. Mariah Spurlock, age 98, of Linwood Ga., died last week. She was the mother of Mrs. Lizzie Vining & Mr. Shad Thompson, of Eufaula. She resided near Eufaula many years ago. Her husband, Mr. Solomon Spurlock is buried at the old family church burying ground just north of the city. Mrs. Spurlock is stepmother of J. M. Spurlock, formerly of Eufaula, & step grandmother of Mr. O. O. Spurlock." Lizzie Vining is Elizabeth Fry, born in 1831 in Georgia, wife of Jefferson Ashley Vining. Shad Thompson is Shadrack Thompson, born in March 1817, in North Carolina, county unknown. Shadrack married Martha (maiden name unknown) in 1848-1849 in Barbour County. In the 1850 census for Barbour County, Shadrack was cited as 32 years of age, born in North Carolina, and Martha was 23, born in Georgia. Also in the home were daughter, Georgia, 1 year of age, and Elva, 63 years of age, born in North Carolina. Since Elva was listed as a Thompson, she's not Martha's mother, but her relationship to Shadrack Thompson is unknown. Also in Barbour County in 1850 are Solomon Spurlock and his wife, Maria Spurlock. Maria is listed as 40 years of age, born in SC, not NC. In 1900, Barbour County, Shade Thompson's birth is given as March 1817, in NC, mother and father in NC. In 1900, Maria Spurlock was enumerated in her daughter, Adaline (Fry) Peace's home in Adairsville, Bartow Co., GA., wi! th her birth in March 1802 in NC, mother and father in NC. Adaline shows her mother being born in NC. If the 1900 census is correct, Mariah Fry Spurlock would be about 15 years of age in 1817 when Shadrack Thompson was born. Mariah married a Fry before 1830 when her son, Edward, was born. She would have Elizabeth and Adaline with a Fry and then marry Solomon Spurlock in 1835 in Crawford Co., GA. In 1820 there are 165 Thompsons listed as heads of households in 32 NC counties. I have no idea who Mariah could have been married to or where they lived in 1817-1820 in NC. Shadrack Thompson, born in 1802, NC., does not appear in Ancestry.com Family Trees or in Rootsweb message boards. Since Shadrack Thompson sold land to William O. Thompson in 1849 in Barbour County, I thought there might be a connection. William O. Thompson is enumerated in Barbour County in 1850 as 39 years of age, born in NC. In his home is a daughter, Elva R., 15 yoa, the same name as Elva that is in Shadrack's homw. Also, William O. has a daughter named Georgia A., the same name as the daughter of Shadrack. Also in Barbour Co., are A. G. Thompson, 31 yoa, born in NC., and John T. Thompson, 69 yoa, born in VA., with wife, Delilah, 50 yoa, born in NC. So can anyone help me solve the puzzell: since Mariah Fry Spurlock is cited as the mother of Shadrack Thompson, who could be the father of Shadrack and how is Shadrack related to William O. Thompson and the other Thompsons in Barbour Co.? Hopefully, Sharon Judy and Lee Anne Hooks can help. I appreciate what anyone can do.
