He is a distant cousin of mine. I have recently obtained a photo of John with his brother and sisters and their father James William "Will" Thompson at their homestead in Michigan. Will's mother and Jack's grandmother was Elizabeth Armstrong, the sister of my 3rd great grandmother Sarah Ann Armstrong. Most of the Armstrong family was raised in PA, but for whatever reason Elizabeth and her husband James William Thompson moved to Michigan. I would be happy to share any information that I have. 1. [THOMPSON] Ensign Irvin A.R. Thompson, of Hudson County, N.J. WW II Sailor Identified
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RIP_08 Surnames: Thompson Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/17347/mb.ashx Message Board Post: On the Web: http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=12178 IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 742-08 September 04, 2008 Three Missing WWII Sailors Are Identified The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of three U.S. servicemen, missing from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors. (see link for complete release) They are Ensign Irvin A.R. Thompson, of Hudson County, N.J.; . . . all U.S. Navy. . . . When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, the battleship USS Oklahoma suffered multiple torpedo hits and capsized. As a result, 429 sailors and Marines died. Following the attack, 36 of these servicemen were identified and the remaining 393 were buried as unknowns in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2003, an independent researcher contacted the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) with information he believed indicated that one of the USS Oklahoma casualties who was buried as an unknown could be positively identified. After reviewing the case, JPAC exhumed the casket, and discovered that it contained what is believed to be the remains of at least 28 other men in addition to the three identified. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of remains for Thompson, Wyman and Boxrucker. Additional remains that could not be attributed to these servicemen will undergo further analysis. For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169. 1. Re: [THOMPSON] Marriage: John THOMPSON & Nancy LEA, 1823, Caswell County, North Carolina
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dcmswindell Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/17057.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great-great-great g'father was John Thompson, who married Nancy Lea in 1823. I think he had a brother, James, who married Delilah Lea in 1822...they were bondsmen for each other, so, I would guess they are brothers (marrying sisters likely). John and Nancy had 10 kids that I have been able to find: Elizabeth J., Nancy, Mary, James, Will, Sarah M., Benjamin F., Sidney A., Minerva A., and Zachary Taylor (my g-g-g'father). It looks like John had a sister named Patience. Zachary married Mary A. Simmons of Richmond; g-grandfather, Robert Sidney (VA); g'father, Robert Henry (Chatham County, NC); father, John Henry (Chatham Coutny, NC). Prior to John (1823), I've found some information but haven't been able to verify it yet: his father was John, born 1722 in Craven County, NC; William born 1700 in Horse's Creek, Surry, VA, and his father John, born 1680 in Surry county. I'd love to share information with you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mcdulph1 Surnames: Thompson, Carson, Bartle, Berk Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/17345/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi all, I am descended from Rose Viola Thompson of New Brunswick, New Jersey. She died in about 1965 at the age of 91. She outlived two husbands: my ancestor Arthur Bartle (d. 1896) and her second husband, John Berk. She had children by each husband. Would love to learn more about Rose's family, especially her Thompson or Carson ancestors and her Berk descendants. (I am just barely old enough to remember "Banny", as we called her. There's an old five-generations picture that includes both of us, and I vaguely remember the picture-taking session!) Anyway, thanks for your time--and if any of my distant cousins are out there, perhaps you can help me identify some of the people in some ancient photographs I recently inherited. Catherine B.
