Do you have any information about any Thompsons in Mississippi? Do you know if there were any major slaveholders in Mississippi by the name of Thompson? If so, where? There may or may not be a connection to my family. There is also the mystery surrounding the man who may or not be my great-grandfather's only relative. My father remembers "Uncle" George whose last name was apparently Thompson. My father remembers him as being a "light-skinned" man, so he could've been mulatto, Native American and Black, or a combo of all three. He had a wife named "Mattie" and reportedly owned property in both Yazoo and Carroll counties, including a farm which employed sharecroppers, a log wagon for hire, mules for hire, and a general store, all of which supported the black community in Teoc, Mississippi (outside of Greenwood). Because he owned property, there is a strong possibility that he was a "Free Black". My father believes that he died abt 1933 (I have no birthyear). I have no clue why his last name was Thompson yet his "brother's" name was Stewart. Questions: Where is the black cemetary in Yazoo City? Are there any Stewarts or Thompsons there? How are the Stewarts and Thompsons related? Where is/was Dover Prescient? Are there any Stewarts still living in Yazoo City and if so, are they related to Nathan Stewart or George Thompson who left for Carroll County between 1880-1900? If you have run across information regarding my great-grandfather Nathan, his wife Nora and/or my great great "uncle" George Thompson, wife Mattie, of Yazoo City and Teoc, Mississippi, PLEASE email me at stewart_tl78@att.net OR the email listed under my profile. Did any of your relatives own plantations/land in the area? I am curious because I am researching a Great Great Uncle, George Thompson, who was from Yazoo Co. I believe that Yazoo County borders Leflore, and I'm not 100% sure that he was actually born within the county borders. Also, my great-grandfather, George's brother and my primary research subject, was married on the border of Leflore and Yazoo Counties (there are two marriage licenses listed, one from each county). From what little I know, George was a light-skinned man, possibly mulatto, or at the very least Native American and African American. I presume also that he was a free Black because he apparently owned property in both Yazoo and Carroll Counties. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. At the present time our government has no family contact for these soldiers. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency. I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family. Author: Encanto59 Surnames: Dean, Thomnpson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/17355/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for descendants of/more information on a William DEAN born 19 Sept. 1799 to Daniel Matthew Dean and wife Elisabeth (---) in Canada, not yet sure where; the first year I find Daniel and family is in the Bay of Quinte Records for 1804 and William was age 5. His exact date of birth is in a Hilliker Family Bible as one of the children of Daniel Dean: William Dean b. Sept 19th 1799. I am trying to confirm if this son William is the one who married a Phoebe Thompson in Bellevue, Hastings County, Ontario, Can. in 1822, in St. Thomas Anglican Church, Bellevue, Hastings, Ontario. Children found for them on census reports are: Ira b. abt.1826; Andrew Daniel b. 1828; Jane abt. 1830; Sidney abt. 1832; Mary Ann abt. 1836; Marilla abt. 1842 and Margaret abt. 1846. The names certainly fit most of what we know now about Daniel Matthew Dean and some of his other lines of descendants; but need some kind of proof/documentation... It seems that the name Ira was important to William and his descendants; it was used many times over, more so in fact than the name Daniel. It was also the middle name of one of the sons of William's father (?)Daniel Matthew Dean, who was named John Ira Dean. It could be a good clue to the (still) unsolved Dean ancestry; I have still not been able to go further back than Daniel Matthew Dean after so many years of searching. William Dean was deceased before the 1851 Canadian census; wife Phoebe (Pheba as transcribed by Ancestry) was a widow. Their son Ira T., born 1825, was in Mason Twp., Cerro Gordo County, Iowa in 1870; 1880 and 1900. Ira T. Dean had a wife Mary C.; born 1839 in Michigan . According to 1900 census for Iowa, Ira T. immigrated to the US 1860; was naturalized. If anyone can offer any useful information whether or not you are a descendant, it will be greatly appreciated. Especially if it is documented... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
