Author: maryachtrh Surnames: Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/17394/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Appears in The Ravia Weekly News, Friday, 11 November 1910, Johnston County, Oklahoma City Marshal Assassinated - Daily Ardmoreite Sunday afternoon Jim Thompson, a young man about 21 years of age, shot and instantly killed City Marshal T. J. Pratt, of Madill, on the streets of that city, and succeeded in making his escape. Pratt was a man about 40 years old and an officer highly respected by everyone in the city. Saturday night he took a gun off of Thompson, who was drinking and the latter fact is supposed to be what prompted the killing. The officer heard that Thompson was after him with a Winchester and called Sheriff Webb over the phone to come and assist him in arresting him. Before the Sheriff arrived , Thompson, whom as stated, was armed with a Winchester rifle, met Pratt and after commanding him to throw up his hands shot him dead and escaped before he could be placed under arrest. The slain man left a wife and several children. The culprit it is known went in a northerly direction, and a posse is now on his trail, and it is believed that he will be captured before night. Feeling is running high in Madill and it is feared that he will be roughly handled when captured. The funeral of Officer Pratt was held this afternoon. Since the above was in type Thompson gave himself up last Tuesday afternoon and was put in jail to await trial. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great, great, great grandfather was Patrick McGonigal and his daughter-in-law married a William Byford in the arly 1800s in what was then Rutherford County, TN. I also think that the McGonigals and the Andersons had some business dealings with the Goodings which is another line that your Holts married into. I know that Patrick McGonigal came from Augusta Co., Va originally but I have never been able to identify his wife, Barbara, but she seems to have Maryland connections because at leeast two of their descendants married women with surnames, Dorsey & Yates, that have or could have Maryland roots. This is from Robert Barnes, BALTIMORE COUNTY FAMILIES, 1659-1759, (Baltimore: Clearfield Co., Inc., 2002 reprint), p. 336. It appears that the original reference is the Register of St. George's Protestant Episcopal Church. Transcription at the Maryland Historical Society, p. 178. St. George's is located in what is now Harford County, MD but Harford County was formed out of "Old" Baltimore County. I do not know if this ties into your Holt family but there are a lot of the early settlers of Cannon County that came from that area. Gaines Thompson was my 3rd Great Grandfather and according to all my research in the past 15 years plus is the brother of the General. General Wyley Thompson was not known to have any children with his wife, but it is said he had one child with the Indian Princess down in Florida. If you have information of children with the wife please correspond. We would both be direct descendants of the Robert Thompson line out of Chesterfield Co., Va. Wyley and Gaines were sons of Isham Thompson and a first wife named Sarah, Isham also was married to one Elizabeth Williams. Isham's father was John Farley Thompson and his father was Robert. I hope to correspond with you. Karen THompson Ledford/Toccoa, GA. "http://home.alltel.net/ktledford/menworegrey" Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
