    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bobanna7 Surnames: Thompson, Haney Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/18771.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you for the link. I have never seen that table on FTDNA and I had my Thompson DNA tested by FTDNA in 2008. The only chart I have seen is on the World Families site and I have not been able to get the Administrator to upload my test results in 2 years. I found my test results already loaded in the chart connected to the link you supplied. Are there other surname charts on the FTDNA site? How do you get to the Thompson chart through the FTDNA site without your direct link? I'd like to look for other surname charts. I tried to go to www.familytreedna.com/public/Haney (Haney is the other surname in which I am interested) and www.familytreedna.com/public/ but neither worked. DNA test results can only be helpful if you match with someone who has more family information than you and is willing to share it. My Haney DNA is in a group with 6 other people on World Families but there is not enough family information between all of us to show how we are connected and to move the line back another generation. I was hoping my Thompson DNA would help me find more info on John Thomson (ca 1677-1724) and his wife Esther Hale in Antrim county, Ulster, Northern Ireland (my 8th great grandparents) but to date it has not helped in furthering the search for the family line. I agree that the 67 marker test is required to have any chance of actually making this work in furthering the search for that next preceding generation. Author: wallwiz Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/18771/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This table illustrates the importance of y-dna testing, helping to eliminate a lot of blind searching. You'll notice that proven related individuals are grouped together. Most Thompsons are in Haplogroup R, with the next most common group being I. As different haplogroups are refined into individual subclades, the better the information available to us. I happen to fall into Haplogroup I, and can in no way be related by blood to anyone in R, E, J, C, or whatever, except by marriage or adoption, allowing me to eliminate them in the search process. The numbers in parentheses are the SNP Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) markers that define distinct subclades, refining the classification process. Mine happens to be positive for L22 and P109, placing me more precisely into group I1d1. Therefore, I know I'm directly related by blood to anyone with the P109 SNP markers even if the connection is 10 generations or more removed to a common ancestor. If you haven't done y-dna testing on a male descendant, it will save you a lot of wasted time and effort regardless of where you decide to have it done, and may even disprove some stuff you believe to be fact. It's best if you can spring for at least a 67 marker test plus a SNP test. A 12 marker test will do nothing more than show you're in a specific haplogroup with miilions of others regardless of surname--a waste in my opinion. Most dna testing companies will allow you to upgrade from a simpler test to a more complex test at a discount, since they will have your sample on hand. I've done this, and was able to prove a group of us were unique by ordering the SNP test a year later. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/thompson/default.aspx?section=yresults Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I don't know how long the "I want to speak to any Thompson" thread has been going on-well over a year?  It'll go away and people will be able to obtain information that is helpful to their research if we're all proactive in making the change. When I make a post, the subject line looks like this:  THOMPSON, Frederick, Michigan, Montcalm Co. D. 1990 I'm specific with who I'm looking for, where he lived  and when he died.  Anyone either in the area or that is researching the line, will immediately pick up on it. I always attempt to post the information on where and when the subject lived. It's a suggestion. Happy hunting, Kathy Researching: THOMPSON, Robert last found in Michigan.  Trying to find out where my illusive Robert Thompson actually came from according the the census' information some read Vermont, some read Ireland.  He died sometimes after the 1870 census.  Place of buried-unknown.  Husband of Surrissa (Syrisa, Clorissa, Thresa & Clarissa-depending on the document) LOCKWOOD, father of Polly, Sarah, Joseph, Smith & Ellen.  Surrissa is buried in the Anderson Cemetery in Decatur,  Van Buren County, MI. ________________________________ From: Mike <[email protected]> To: [email protected]; [email protected] Sent: Sun, December 5, 2010 2:20:56 PM Subject: Re: [THOMPSON] Long past time to end this thread Amen! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, December 05, 2010 2:08 PM Subject: Re: [THOMPSON] Long past time to end this thread > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: mattanderson1 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thompson/7774.447.1.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I must agree totally with Michael P. > It has got to the stage where I don't bother reading this particular > thread of messages as it is just boring now and no real use to many. Did you know there are around 672500 people in the United States alone who have THOMPSON as a last name? Probably millions worldwide. Any person who had an ancestor named Thom could have taken this as a family name when that became the style. There are literally hundreds of thousands of completely unrelated Thompson families. Don't seek to talk to any Thompson. Find your own relatives and ancestors by posting some specific information. Include the main names in the subject line, and a date range at least. Give as many specifics as you have. Then you might actually match up with someone else's family tree. We're ALL related one way or another to somebody named Thompson, or we wouldn't be on this board.
