I laugh when I see the TV commercials where somebody clicks on a leaf in their family tree and discovers all sorts of great information. In my experience, those leaves almost always lead to somebody's else's family tree who has copied it wholesale and has no new information, or to dozens of possible hits in some database that you can't view without spending huge amounts of money. I've only rarely gotten actual useful information in that way. There's an awful lot of information online compared to only a few years ago, but it's still not possible to just post some query and get all your questions answered with no effort. Family research still takes a lot of patience and deductive reasoning to accomplish well. I guess too many people just don't read any of the previous messages in this thread. I see hundreds of posts each with its completely unrelated bit of family to which somebody is seeking connections. And very few serious researchers even look at this thread because it's so useless. Most of us scan the subject lines for possible connections to our own search. I just get frustrated once in a while and point this out to some newbie, only to have three more post to the thread right afterward. Best wishes for 2011. I think the problem is that Ancestry is telling people that they don't have to know what they are looking for to just start looking. I have a problem with that. These people do need to know what they are looking for or they will put out bad info like I have seen so many times! It seems like our plea to stop this nonsense is falling on death ears! You can't stop aimless people from persuing their endless threads. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This appeared in the June 10, 1875 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette in the "Thomaston" column: "Henry Thompson, a lad five years old, son of one of the proprietors of the Thomaston Accommodation, in attempting, with some other scholars, (returning home from school on Monday last) to jump on to a gebogan, fell on to the ground, bruising him severely. They were apparently "planted" in Northern Ireland by the English king James I(also James VI of Scotland-Mary Queen of Scots son).So many left No.Ireland before 1800 and came to No.America, possibly to Quebec also.It is a long story. That i think ,account for my family. We tend to have a thin face and dark hair.Lines on our faces as we age.Large ears too. It's way too general to provide you any specific information. Dozens of people have posted their completely unrelated queries to it, and have gotten no response. You can't match the world because everything matches the world. You need something more specific. Start a new thread with a subject line something like "Need information on Thompsons from Lachute, Quebec in 1790s" then put as much specific information as you have in the message. The more information you can give, the better the chance it will match somebody else's information. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I believe he was born around 1885 (in Missouri) and I believe his father was named John. I know that he married Nellie Lyle (maiden name Holler)sometime before 1926. Together he and Nellie had 3 children: Warren, Jeanette (born Helen Jannette) - my grandmother, and Roger. He must have been married twice prior to Nellie, because he had other kids: Hadley, Viola, Edward, Mable, Lottie, Otis, and Gladys and I know they were not Nellie's. I am interested in his parents and any siblings he may have had. I would also love to hear anything you may know about any of the kids...
