If you want someone to help you you must give them something to work with. Not all people with the Thompson surname are related. You need to know how surnames developed and about how long they have been being used. If I were going to ask someone for help with my Thompson line, I would give them as much as I could, because this helps the researcher look for the correct family. You need to advise the researcher as to what is factual as far as you know and what is family rumors/unproven history. My information might look something like this: 1. Margaret Thompson was born Estimated 1599 in Scotland. She married John Beatty 1619 in Scotland. He was born 1587 in Scotland . Children of Margaret Thompson and John Beatty: i. 2. James Beatty was born 1620. ii. 3. John Beatty was born 1621 in Ayrshire, Scotland. iii. 4. Henry Beatty was born 1623. iv. 5. Patrick Beatty was born 1625. Note: This information was provided to me with no actual documentation for proof..nlp ~~~~~~~~ It is important to get documentation not just copy someone elses work. You might use it as a springboard for researching, but you need proof. I have a true story from my half sister that helps show what thinking you know the truth can do. Mary Jane Gilpin b. about 1928 in KS, went to school, graduated, got married divorced re-married paid taxes, worked had a social security card... bank account and every normal thing a person would have. Jake her second husband wanted to take a vacation in Europe, to do this Mary Jane had to get a passport. Of course she needed her birth certificate... LOL her birth name was not Mary Jane,it was Jaqulene. She choise to remain Mary Jane, but this just proves that you even need to get the documentation on yourself. Now if you really want help, you will back up, figure out what data you have and provide it to this board and as I said I'll try to do some look ups for you. By the way that Thompson line is my actual Thompson. Nelda a genealogy researcher for over 15 years Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been trying to read the "Any Thompson" posts because I was desperate. You're right, it seems to be a waste of time. I saw where you posted to start a new thread. I have been researching different branches of my tree for 17 years but am not too familiar with the message boards. I hope I am doing this right. I am trying to find out about a Thomas Thompson who is listed on the 1870 census for Rich Square Township, Northampton Co., North Carolina. He was a white Farmer with approximately 40 blacks in his household. The first four, Peter James, Dicy James, William James and Peter James are my ancestors. They may have been slaves of his before the civil war in 1865 and stayed over as sharecroppers by 1870. On the 1880 census they had changed their surname to Richardson and I can't find any trace of Thomas in the area. I do not think he was from Northampton Co. because I can't find him in the area before this time. I think he may be the son of Levi Thompson from Bertie Co., NC who was a large Planter in the area. I read some of Levi's papers and he mentioned that he bought his son some land and gave him a few slaves to start out. With the slavery issue and the name change I am at a dead end with my Richardson/James ancestors. Especially why if they were slaves of Thompson were they l! isted as James and why did they change their last name to Richardson? Thanks for any help anyone can give me or point me in the right direction. My great-grandmother was Anna Boyle (b. 1865 in Salineville, OH). She married (or was impregnated by?) a man named Willis Thompson (place and year of birth unknown). They had a daughter named Maud in 1881 who was born near Steubenville, OH. Anna later had another son named Edward Thompson (b. 1893 near Cincinnati) but I'm not sure who his father was. In 1896, Anna married another Thompson - Edward Thompson (b. 1867). She divorced him and then met my great-grandfather Charles Newarell (who was only 16, Anna was 45). They had my grandmother, Grace Newarell in 1911 and Anna died in 1914. Maud Thompson (Anna Boyle and Willis Thompson's daughter) married William Haley and they had one son - James R. Haley (b. 1899). They divorced and she then married Andrew McGovern sometime between 1900 and 1910. She divorced McGovern and died of alcohol poisoning in 1921 in Weirton, WV. Does anyone know anything about Willis Thompson or his daughter Maud? The family history is so convoluted and confusing and I believe many of these people were not married when the children were born. I need help to determine if I have this information correct. I recently had my family finder/autosomal DNA tested trying to locate my grandmother's family and confirmed suspicions that her adoptive father William Sterrett was her real father. In doing so I've found the Thompson-Arbuckle connection but beyond that it gets confusing. I have Margaret Thompson 1715-1760 and James Arbuckle 1713-1783 married in Scotland in 1738. Margaret's parents are listed as William Thompson and Esther Davidson; they apparently divorced and he married Sarah Evans. William's parents are listed as William Archibald Thompson and Marie Margaret Milne. W.A.'s parents are listed as William Thompson and Mary Fordyce. This William Thompson's parents are William Thompson and Jannet Hay. Which takes me to him being born 1600 in Midlothian Scotland. Is this correct? Thanking you in advance for your help.
