My husband is related to the John Thomas of New Haven, CT who married Tabitha. Apparently the family legend for his line is "from Cardiff, Wales" and they came over to USA because of religious problems. Read about the early Gilbert line as they came at the same time and it will give you some ideas as why they came to USA and the problems they had in England/Wales.
