AFFIDAVIT OF KATHERINE LOWRY THOMAS FOR LAND BOUNTY CLAIM State of Tennessee County of Cocke On this thirty first day of March A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five, personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and state aforesaid Katherine Thomas aged 68 years, a resident of the County of Cocke in the state of Tennessee, who being duly sworn according to law declares that she is the widow of George Thomas deceased who was a private in the Company commanded by Charles Levin in the Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Gunmen commanded by Colonel John Brown in the war between the Creek Indians which existed in the years 1813 and 1814. That her said husband volunteered at Newport in the County of Cocke in the state of Tennessee on or about the first day of January 1814 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for the said term of six months and was honorably discharged at Newport, aforesaid on or about the 31st day of une 1814. She further states that she was married to the said George Thomas in the County of Sullivan in the State of Tennessee on the 12th day of Jan,y 1804 by one John Jennings, a Justice of the Peace for said County of Sullivan and that her name before her said marriage was Katherine Lowry, that her said husband died in the County of Cocke on the sixth day of January A. D. 1855 and that she is now a widow at the time of executing this her declaration. That her said husband obtained a Bounty Land Warrant under the Act of Sept. 28th, 1850 for 80 acres to which her said husband legally transferred and disposed of and is not now in her power to return and same being sold as aforesaid, she cannot give the number and date thereof. She refers to said declaration for evidence of her said husbands service.vo.(sic) She makes the declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which she may be entitled under the Act approved March 3rd 1855. She declares that she has never received or applied for Bounty Land under this or any other Act of Congress Her Katherine X Thomas Mark Sworn to and suscribed before me the day and year above written, and I certify that I believe the claimant to be the identical person she represents herself to be, and that I have no interest in said claim. G. I. Thomas J P of Cocke County State of Tennessee County of Cocke On this thirty first day of March A. D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five, personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid William McSween and James Thomas residents of the County and state aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law declare that they are personally and well acquainted with the Mrs. Catherine Thomas and that they saw her make her mark to the foregoing declaration and that they know her to be the identical person therein represented and she is now a widow and that they are disinterested witness. William McSween J. M. Thomas Sworn to and suscribed before me this 31st day of March 1855 and I certify that the said William McSween and James Thomas are credible and respectful citizens. G. I. Thomas J. P. State of Tennessee County of Cocke On this 31st day of March 1855 personally appeared before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and state aforesaid William McSween and William C. Roadman, to me well known and are credible and respectful men and who being duly sworn by me, depose and say that they are well acquainted with Mrs. Katherine Thomas the foregoing applicant for Bounty Land, that they have known her for twenty five years last past, that they were well acquainted with George Thomas her late husband having known him for twenty five years last passed previous to his death and that they, the said Katherine and George Thomas lived together all this time aforesaid as husband and wife and were reputed so to be and they have never heard the fact of their marriage doubted or questioned The said William McSween states that he saw the said George Thomas after he was dead at his own house about the 6th day of January 1855 and assisted to lay him in his coffin and saw him buried. The said Roadman states that he lives a near neighbor to the said widow and has no doubts of said Thomas' death. They both state that the said Catherine Thomas has since that day and still is reputed to be his widow. That she has never married since her husbands death and still is his widow and that her husband was the identical man mentioned as a soldier in the foregoing declaration and further that they were present and saw her execute the foregoing affidavit to her forgoing declaration, that they the deponents reside in the County aforesaid and are disinterested witness. State of Tennessee County of Cocke On this 31st day of March 1855 personally appeared before me an acting Justice of the Peace within and for the County aforesaid and authorized by law to adminster oaths for general purposes. James Thomas to me well known a resident of said county and a credible and respected person and who by me being first sworn, deposes and declares that he is well acquainted with Mrs. Katherine Thomas the foregoing applicant for Bounty Land and he has known her for twenty years past and was equally well acquainted with her husband George Thomas deceased, that the said Katherine and George Thomas lived together all the time aforesaid as husband and wife and that he never heard the marriage doubted or questioned. He further states that he saw the said George Thomas die at his residence on the 6th day of January 1855 and that the said Katherine is still his widow. That he has examined her family record and believes the same to be genuine, that it is contained in a manuscript book purporting to be a family record and appears to be fifty years old. And that the said record so far as it related to the mariage of said applicant to said soldier is as follows "January the 12th 1804 George Thomas and Catherine Lowry were married" which is an exact copy of the same. J. M. Thomas State of Tennessee County of Cocke I Allen McMahan, Clerk of County Court of the County aforesaid do certify that George I. Thomas, esquire before whom the foregoing Declaration and affidavits were taken and executed and who has thereunto suscribed name was at the time of so doing as acting Justice of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid duly commissioned and sworn and that his signature is genuine. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of the county court of said County of Cocke this day of______________1855 Signed Allen McMahan clerk of said court Transcribed by William Thomas The foregoing document was filed for a Bounty Land claim by Katherine Lowry Thomas in 1855, according to information included with these documents the Claim was allowed and 80 acres of land was granted. No information is available as to where this land was located and none was included with the documents. It is interesting to note that the Justice of Peace, G. I.(George Isaac) Thomas was the son of George and Katherine Lowry Thomas as was the witness J. M. (James M.) Thomas. wt
