I am looking for the whereabouts of my grandfather Rice Thomas in 1900. He was born November 4, 1883 in Laurel County KY. In the 1900 Census taken in June he would be age 16. Rice was a Coal Miner and he told me that he started at age 11 working in the mines. His father Lafayette Thomas died March 19, 1888 in Laurel County KY. His mother is Elizabeth Jane Isaacs born December 13, 1849, Jackson County KY. Brothers and sister are as listed: Leander 1871 Elijah J. 1873 Gelina 1876 Samuel 1878 William 1880 Anderson 1886 Isaac Bluford 1887 In the 1900 Laurel County KY Census, District 157, Mag District 6, Cross Roads Precinct, James Thomas born January 1827 is living in the household of his son David. James died in 1913 Laurel County KY and is buried in the Thomas Cemetery there. James is the grandfather of Rice. Elizabeth his mother and widow is a head of household with two sons, Anderson and Isaac B., living with her. Samuel Thomas, brother of Lafayette, and family are next door to Elizabeth. Next to Samuel is James W. Huston, wife Gelina and daughters. Gelina is Rice's sister. In later census his name was spelled Rise and Ross and I have seen Thomas spelled Tomas in some cases. If brothers Leander, Elijah, Samuel and William are also found, that would be great to know. I suspect they are all in the same mining community not too far from the old homestead, because Rice and Della Mae Johnson were married at Viva, Laurel County KY in June 29 1905. In the 1910 Census my grandparents are in Burnwell, Kanawha Co. WV. Eventually they end up at Dante, Russell County VA, where my mother and I were born in his house. Greatly appreciate any help.
