... I'm none too sure of the dates but the range is right, and I'm not at all sure of location of her birth, I'll explain further. John HILL 1759-1849 married first Sarah COLYER. It appears she died young and left a young family. Grandmother-lore said that Sallie THOMAS raised Sackett Hill b. 1799. I'll have to describe John Hill's life and travels to describe where Sallie fit in. John was born in what was Ulster County NY, birth registered at 1759 Kingston Dutch Reformed Church. Later his father John probably had not moved from Wallkill, but southern Ulster County was lopped off about 1798 and added to Orange County, thus census changed to show Orange. John m Colyer 1782. His 1849 will documents named (1st) four children - Hugh 1793, Deborah 1794, Sackett 1799 and Anna (Fanny) 1802. Children of Sallie Thomas were Joseph b 1807, Morris b 1812, possibly Abner b 1812 of whom I know nothing, and Jemima b. 1811. Here is 1800 census: 1800 > New York > ORANGE > WALLKILL Series: M32 Roll: 21 Page: 339 John HILL Jr 2..1.|211.... (near brother Caleb) John age over 45 + two boys and two girls under 10 and one girl between the ages of 16 and 25; woman over 26 under 45. John Sr lives near Tilton, also at Wallkill. There should be a 3rd daughter but John's 1849 will names only 2. I estimate that John and Sallie married after 1800 or after 1802, and by 1807. John was one of the earlier families settling the part of Tioga County NY which later became Chemung County. A look at the family 1820: 1820 U.S. Census New York Tioga Spencer John HILL 21.2.1|111.1.|3 Abner FLANDERS 1...1.|1.1...|... John SHOEMAKER .1..1.|11.1..|1.. (John is over 45, Sallie 26-45, making Sallie's birth year 1776-1794) John and Sallie have 5 boys at home and 3 girls, Deborah is next door married to Abner FLANDERS and Fannie is married to Peter WESTBROOK. Jemima (who may be named for her THOMAS grandmother) is still at home -- and there are 2 other little girls not named later in John's will. 5 boys - that accounts for them all, if Abner existed; he may have died young or run off to the '49er CA goldfields. John's son Sackett, my ancestor, was enumerated 1850 at Cayuta near his father and brother Hugh, and it was stated by the enumerator that he was born Chemung. I don't know if that was an error told him by a family member, nor if it implied he was born Chemung town 1799 when what became Tioga County was still Montgomery County (which means his father returned to Wallkill briefly), or the part of Tioga County that became Chemung. Back to Sallie. Some time between about 1835 - 1845 sons Joseph and Morris emigrated to Carmi Co, IL. John's 1849 will documents state that 15 years earlier, his 3rd wife Elizabeth UNKN and he separated via "anti nuptual", thus 1834. So let's say Sallie died between 1828 - 1833, about when her sons left for IL. This covers about all I know about Sallie. Around 1800 her family lived either at Orange/Ulster County area, or Tioga, maybe Broome County, NY. I have not found a burial for her, either. I've speculated that according to naming customs of the time her father may have been a Joseph THOMAS, her mother likely Jemima. Can you help me place Sallie with a family, please?
