I'm researching Thomas family in the Greenup & Carter counties of KY. David Thomas b 1829 is listed in the 1860 Greenup census with wife Ann & children and his father John listed as age 80, also listed is Matilda who is believed to be sister of David, and Henry who is believed to be brother of David. I know they later moved to Carter County. David's death certificate lists his mother as Catherine Rice. I have been unable to locate any of these family members prior to 1860. Some family members believe they came from PA through OH to KY; while others believe they came from NC to KY. David referred to himself as Pennsylvania Dutch, perhaps lending thought to the PA roots. Does anyone know this Thomas family or provide any clues to aid in my research? Thanks, BJ Brown

Hi BJ I have a John Thomas that was born in Md. but moved to Ky. Greenup Co. He was in the Kanawha Co., WV census is 1830, 1840 and 1850, after that I don't know if he died or left the state. Maybe he is the one you have in 1860. He had a son named John D(?), born in 1823. His son William had a son named David Henry born in 1854, but he lived and died in WV. His son John D. also had a son named David A. also born in 1854. So there may be a son named David of John, the oldest one, and that is the uncle these grandson David's are named after. I can send more information if you think it is possible that these Thomases are at least related to those, since All of John's kids were born in Greenup Co., Ky.
