    3. Well perhaps the story about him dying in the war was to cover for the embarrassment of his not returning to his family... Interesting that the youngest son would have also been named James. Family legends sometimes stretch the truth a bit. We were always told that he left home and never went back. He was a lot older than my great grandmother. This made us think he had another family before joining the war. Of all the research that I have done, I have come to the conclusion that the James S. Thomas that married Martha Anthony is our James S. Thomas. James S. did not die until he was in his 90s. I have a photograph of him when he was up in age. I think he left for the war and he never went back to his family. He would always beg his children to go back to Georgia and claim his inheritance.
