I'm jumping in here to say that I'm sorry to hear that you have been ill, and I hope that you are now well on the way to recovery, if not already! Also, my grandmother, Susan Americus Thomas, was born in 1850 in Coosa Co., AL, to John Q. Thomas and Amanda M. (Brown) Thomas. When I was just a small child (Susan died in 1944, when I was 8 years old), I remember her saying that we were "Black Dutch". Now, whether that means Melungeon or not, I don't know. Have you heard of Black Dutch before? Being Indian and/or Mulungeon had bad connotations; therefore, the term Black Dutch was often used to refer to either of the above. I think the other term was Black Irish. I also have read that some of the Cherokees who escaped the Trail of Tears took up this identity. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -----Original Message----- From: "Carolyn S.
