---------- From: Karen Sanders Sent: Monday, February 08, 1999 8:30 AM To: FAMILYBUS@LISTS-IMANET.ORG To members of the above E-Mail Exchange. Some of the IMA's other e-mail exchanges have been affected by a virus (this program is actually more correctly referred to as a "worm") inadvertently transmitted by a subscriber as an attachment entitled Happy99.exe. If you receive such a file, either through the e-mail exchange or any other source, don't open it! The file can do damage only if opened. This file has been described as a worm traveling across the Internet via e-mail attachments and newsgroup postings. The worm modifies e-mails and newsgroup postings by adding unauthorized attachments without the computer user's knowledge. While the computer worm does not destroy files or otherwise cripple computers and networks, it creates a time- and energy-consuming nuisance. The computer worm works on Windows 95 and 98 platforms. If you have already opened such a file or want more information, here is some advice I received from the IMA IT department (my computer was hit.) Although we are not endorsing any products here, Datafellows is offering free protection against this particular strain at: http://www.datafellows.com/news/pr/eng/19990129.htm and Symantec offers protection against it with it's virus definition files dated 1/28/99 or later. Symantec also offers instructions to delete it manually: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/happy99.worm.html If you are using some other anti-virus software you should check their website for information.
