Hoodenphyl against Gore-Thomas, John Thomas estate names wife Catherine, sons, John B., and Bird, daughters, Lydia Gore, Clara Lewis, Margaret Hoodenphyle, and Elizabeth Shewmake on film at McClung Library, Knoxville, Tn. ; Sherry Rothwell Hildreth, found this info and made copies of the document, and sent me ( Imo Lee Card Greenwood ) a copy. Sherry also found the document that was ordered by the chancery court to make distribution according to the will of, John Thomas., and sent me copies of same. Elizabeth is thought to have died before 1840, she is not found on the 1840 census, and is not living at time of the documents mentioned above, years 1848 and 1849. Notes for JOHN SHEWMAKE: It is believed that this John Shewmake is husband of Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of John Thomas, as John Thomas was administrator on the 1812-1813, Bledsoe county court minutes for John Shoemake. John Thomas's Bible records show Catherine Shewmake and Isaac Gore Shewmake, who are believed to be grandchildren of John Thomas. There has been found court records showing that John Thomas's daughter, as Elizabeth Shewmake, who we believe to be the mother of Catherine Shewmake and Isaac Gore Shewmake. It is thought that this John Shewmake was married previously, before Elizabeth Thomas, and had other children. John Shewmake's father believed to be Samuel Shoemake,Jr., listed on the 1830 census Bledsoe County, Tn. about age 90-100.. his father is believed to be Samuel Shoemake,Sr., born 1710, moved from Va. to S.C., and his father, John De La Chaumette. The above court records were found by Sherry Rothwell Hildreth. She has worked very hard to discover the above information, and I give her all the credit for doing so, Imo Lee Card Greenwood. iv. JOHN GORE, December 22, 1838. Notes for LYDIA THOMAS: Shortly after, John's death, Lydia and her three sons left TN. and move to Texas, settling first in Parker Co. near Wise Co line. During this trip west which probably occurred in 1851, her oldest son Isaac died of lung disease. Lydia was listed as one of the settlers on lands approved for preemption of vacant lands within limits of the Mississippi and Pacific Railroad. She apparently had been living there for a while. Her brother, John B. Thomas was one of the chain carriers for the railroad survey. This suggests that Lydia and her brother came to Texas together. The 1870 Parker County tax list has her son Andrew Jackson Gore as the owner of this land; however, in 1889 this same land was listed in Lydia's name. Neither she nor her two children were listed in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Parker and/or Wise counties. These two counties were heavily involved in the Indian wars during this period and the census takers did not make the necessary effort to count all of the citizens. Lydia was listed on the 1875 Parker County tax list. 1850 census Bledsoe County, TN, Lydia was listed in the household of her younger brother, John B. Thomas. John Gore and Lydia Thomas Gore had three sons, all born in TN. Source for the above info, was Joyce Gore Locke, in email message to Imo Lee Card Greenwood, July 18, 1998. There was a law suite, March 15, 1848, Bledsoe Co. Tn., S.C. NORWOOD (admin for MARGARET ( Thomas ) HOODENPYLE vs Wm Stephens, JOHN B. THOMAS, and BIRD THOMAS , and carried over through Sept 11, 1849 . The case sites that the widow , CATHERINE, of JOHN THOMAS, did not adhere to the provisions of distribution of property set forth by her husband JOHN THOMAS'S will. At her death the property was to be divided equally to his four daughters, LYDIA GORE, CLARA LEWIS, ELIZABETH SHOEMAKE, and MARGARET HOODENPYLE . The case was re-accessed and divided per JOHN THOMAS'S will. vii. JAMES BIRD THOMAS, SR, b. January 19, 1804, Bledsoe Co., Tn. (Source: DAR #466361, DAR dated July 8, 1963.); d. Masters Family History by, Jack Masters, states : Byrd Thomas was a livestock dealer and traveled to other counties and states to purchase horses. He often traveled at night and slept days to avoid Indians. He became ill on one of his trips, died and was probably buried where he died. The 1860 census showed Deborah as head of household. Bird Thomas was sheriff of Bledsoe Co., Tn. Notes for DEBORAH MASTERS: Deborah Masters Thomas is buried in Fisk Cemetery, Overton Co., Tn. ( from Masters Family History 1691-1989, compiled and written by, Jack Masters. viii. CLARISSA (CLARICY) THOMAS, b. December 4, 1808, Bledsoe Co., Tn. (Source: Bible records John Thomas , and Isaac Gore.); d. ABT 1845, Tn.; m. DAVIS LEWIS, ABT 1822, Tn.. Notes for CLARISSA (CLARICY) THOMAS: Clarissa (Claricy) Thomas is shown on her father, John Thomas's Bible records. John Thomas died before 24 March 1851 as shown in the suit of Phillip Hoodenpyle vs Davis Lewis. John Thomas left a will by which he bequeathed to his wife during her life some negroes, with his remainder to his four daughters one of which was Clora Lewis who died in the life time of the widow of John Thomas. Said widow of John Thomas has also since died. Clora was the wife of deft. Lewis. Bird Lewis , one of the children of Clora Lewis, has died leaving no wife or children. Apparently there were five children born to Clora and Davis Lewis. (War TN, ch ct Min. 1/276 ) == Warren Co., TN, chancery court minutes, book 1 page 276.
