We are searching for any information on Ingalls, any spelling, Cass (various spellings, including Case) and Thomas in the Exeter Township, Otsego county, NY area, and in the areas mentioned below. Any suggestions on places to search; books or records that might help; or other places to post this will be appreciated. We have already done extensive research. We are especially interested in any any information on Benjamin Ingalls, born 18 Aug 1771, number 539 in Burleigh's 1903 "Ingalls Genealogy". We are fairly sure that Benjamin was the father of James, my known ancestor. James was b. 9 Jan 1802, probably in Exeter Twp, Otsego County, NY. Review of census records for Benjamin Ingalls show him in Exeter, Otsego County, NY, in the 1800 and 1810 census. We believe he arrived in Exeter about 1797. The census and other records indicate Benjamin moved to Henderson, Jefferson county, NY, about 1810. A Seth Ingalls also lived in Henderson at the same time as a Benjamin and James. All three are mentioned in the 1820-1835 (1810-1820?) Henderson Town Meeting Minutes. We suspect that Seth could be a brother or cousin of James. Burleigh says that Benjamin died in Ellisburg, Jefferson County, NY, but does not say when. Based on census records, we believe Benjamin died about 1830 in Ellisburg or Henderson. We have never found any published information or any documentation on the children of Benjamin. Burleigh does not list the children for Benjamin, but does mention two wives. Burleigh says Benjamin, married first Margery Cass. Married 2nd, Sally Thomas. Our research shows Margery Cass was born 9 Sep 1772, and Sally Thomas, was born abt 1793. We have the marriage information for Benjamin and Margery. ======== We think Sally Thomas was b. Whitehall, Washington Co. NY ca 1793, to John Thomas. She married Benjamin Ingalls after 1810. Family records indicate that my James' mother (possibly step-mother) moved with James and his wife to Burton Twp, Genesee County, MI in 1835, where he homesteaded east of Flint MI. We suspect Sally (Thomas) Ingalls re-married, because we can not find any records of her death. If the Sally Thomas b. 1793 was the second wife of Benjamin, then it is unlikely that she was the mother of my ancestor James Ingalls, who was born in 1802 <g>. This Sally Thomas would have been about 35 when Benjamin died, and about 42 when James homesteaded in MI. ======== The info below is more of the information we have on this family. Any additional data or sources would be appreciated. J.M. Edmund, B#534, oldest brother of Benjamin #539, was born in Rehobath, MA, 7 Aug 1761, was a farmer at Hartford, NY, died Gouvernear (St. Lawrence County per our note), 23 Oct 1825. Edmund had a son Ira born 22 June 1800. My James had an Ira. Edmund's daughter Mary married Elias Goodrich of Hopkinton MA. Goodrichs were neighbors of my James near Flint MI after 1835. Otis, B541, a younger brother of Benjamin, was born in Rehoboth MA, was a farmer at Hartford NY, died at Flint MI. My James lived just East of Flint MI. Burleigh says descendants of Otis are to be found in MI. Only one son, Otis, B1333, is listed in Burleigh, and he did not live or die in MI. None of B1333's descendants are listed as being born, living, or dying in MI. Some source may have said the other children of B541 lived in MI, but did not provide any other info? Caleb Bowen, B538, was an older brother of Benjamin. Caleb's son Caleb, B1322, b. 18 Mar 1809, was a farmer at Springville NY and Coldwater MI, d. Buffalo NY, 30 July 1886. ========== The next 2 paragraphs are from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York, published about 1860. RICHFIELD was formed from Otsego, April 10, 1792. Exeter and Plainfield were taken off in 1799. It is the extreme northern town of the co. Its surface is rolling and moderately hilly, with a mean elevation of 150 to 200 ft. above Schuyler Lake, Pray and Nine Hills, on either side of the head of the lake, rising about 200 ft. higher. Schuyler Lake, in the S. E. corner, occupies a deep valley; and into it flow several small streams from the N. and W. The soil is of a diversified character, consisting of gravel, slate, clay, and sandy loam, well cultivated and productive. About 500,000 pounds of cheese are made in the town annually, being more than double that made in any other town in the co. Richfield Springs, (p. v.,) near the head of Schuyler Lake, in the N. E. corner of the town, contains 3 churches, a flouring mill, and 368 inhabitants. EXETER was formed from Richfield, March 25, 1799. It is an interior town, lying N. W. of the center of the co. The surface is hilly and broken, consisting mainly of elevated uplands. Angel Cliff and Town Cliff Hills, in the E. part of the town, are 400 to 500 ft. above the valleys. The town is drained E. by several small streams flowing into Schuyler Lake, and S. by Butternut and Wharton Creeks, both of which rise in this town. The soil is a clay and gravelly loam, well adapted to grazing. Exeter Center (Exeter p.o.) contains a church and 106 inhabitants. Schuylers Lake, (p.v.,) at the outlet of Schuyler Lake, on the E. border of the town, contains 2 churches and 280 inhabitants. West Exeter (p.v.) contains 1 church and 100 inhabitants. The first settlements were made by John Tunnicliff, near Schuyler Lake, and William Angel, on Angel Hill, in 1789. The first religious association (Presb.) was formed at Exeter Center, in 1800; Rev. T. W. Duncan was the first regular preacher. (Note:Rev. Calvin Ingals was the first settled Presb. minister at South Bergen, formed from Batavia. The first religious meeting was held there in Sept 1807.
