Hi Tom Nice to hear from someone that is dealing with Northeast New England. I have so many Thomas' that I would need name, date, place (or part of those 3) to check anyone. This is not my major family, but I've ended up with a huge amount of Thomas, ancestors. My major family is Wood/Atwood/atte Wode. I also have a huge amount of Hancock, Chapin, Mullins, Shaw, Alden, Standish Bradford, Winslow, it goes on..... My 9th g-grandparents: (She is the only Sibley I have in my tree) Damarice? Sibley, b. abt 1597, Salem, Essex, MA, d. 28 Nov 1674 Salem, Essex Co, MA. She married Abt 1519, England, to Samuel or William Shattuck, b. date unknown, Dorset, England, d. 6 Jun 1698, Salem, Essex Co, MA. I have not even begun to study this family yet. Who all are you wanting to connect to who? If I have someone, but no definitive source, shall I omit them, or do you want their name(s) as a possible clue to check out? The three main Thomas books are: 1) An old book which has many branches of the Thomas family - including ones that didn't come over by the time of writing. It's called The Thomas Book by Lawrence Buckley Thomas. Ancestry has it online. 2) There's also a Thomas family book by J. Montgomery Seaver. I have this - it's more like a booklet - 3) The Thomas Family of Hilltown Township by Edward Mathews. Hello ntbrown, it appears that you have hit the nail on the head with your answer to all the book questions. The only Thomas book I've seen was a "History of Charlton County, GA". (can't remember the author at this writing). It had my maternal grgrandparents; did not know her maiden name; had grgrpa's name spelled wrong which sent us off in another direction; had their children all mixed up with 2nd generation; had birth dates and deaths in error and basically was totally incorrect. I finally got a listing from another source and they had my grandfather's children partially listed and all mixed up between his 3 wives., to say nothing of not listing his last 2 wives who gave him no children. My point is that there are a lot of "BOOKS" and "TREES" that are not proven and are horrendously inaccurate; don't trust these books, but dig thru your own family records, personal knowledge and take what you can from rootsweb; remember also that even census reports taken in the late 1800 - early 1900's were gathered by and given by persons with little or no education, names were spelled in many variables and having worked in court records for 30 some years, I found many spelling variables even as recently as 1970's. I handled documents that were still signed with an X mark in the 1970's. My greatest point is that when "books" are written and published it is for the purpose of making money, not necessarily for the purpose of accuracy. Happy hunting to all who are searching; thanks to those who have searched diligently and found proof certain the facts they print and share with all of us. geniekin@cs.com

If my memory is correct, the topic of books that relate the genealogy and family history of various groups of people with the Thomas surname has been covered fairly extensively before on this List. Those of you who are looking for such books might want to search the Ancestry.com/Roots Message Boards, etc. for much of the information that you are seeking. I think you will find out more about such books more quickly from some of the archived notes than waiting for people to respond to new postings. The book mentioned about Thomas family in MD may be "Thomas Family of Talbot County, Maryland and Allied Families" by Richard Henry Spencer (1914). Prior messages have also discussed whether there are some errors in Spencer's book. There have been similar online discussions about any number of Thomas-related books, so Spencer wasn't being singled out for criticism. I don't remember with absolute certainty, but Spencer's book and perhaps others are available via the online service HeritageQuest. Just a suggestion. Melissa F. There is a Thomas surname project on the internet, maybe not your branch. You could go there and check the information on ancestors of those who have had the tests and see if it seems there could be a connection to one of the posters.
