    3. Hi Jacque Digging further into the information you provided, I did a search through Rootsweb to refresh my memory as to what others have posted. I have to remind myself that unless there are credible sources attached that I must always maintain a degree of skepticism until I can prove otherwise, a wise practice in this hobby. If you read the history of Monson, ME, you will find two Chapins in particular who are mentioned in the early history, Amasa and Aretas. Both were born in Monson, MA, a town about 10 miles outside of Springfield, MA where Deacon Samuel Chapin originally settled. Both were some of the earliest settlers of Monson, ME. I can work backwards to Deacon Samuel. Going forward does not take me very far. Amasa was the father of Aretas. Aretas had five children. James Henry Chapin, son of Aretas, married Lovica Vinton Sherman, daughter of Horatio Sherman another early settler, in 1861. Unfortunately, many of the early records of Monson were lost in a fire. My great grandfather was born in 1883, his father in 1846. We have a fairly confident lineage for my great grandfather's parents, but his mother's ancestry is weak. No where do I find a Chapin connection and hence my suspicion is that there may be no Chapin connection, but rather there may be a Sherman connection. Presumably, Lovica was my great grandfather's great aunt. I need to do some more research on her to track her down along with her family. She is reportedly buried in one of the suburbs of Boston. From there, then to see what further information can I dig out that may provide additional leads. Time to go beyond just researching what is available on the internet and do some real hardcore genealogical research if I think I am going to get to the bottom of this tangled mess. Take care Tom

    3. Hi Tom Did the Thomas' I sent you that moved from MA>ME sound like possible follow ups for you? Thanks for the tip on the Chapins. I do have a few Amasas in my Hancock family, and they are connected to the Chapins as well as Thomas'. I'll see what I can come up with from that direction, and read the history of Monson, ME. It's always exciting to find more clues to follow. Thanks. I checked my Hancock line for Lovicas, but only came up with 2 Lovinas. I do have a Lovina Thomas b.1818 Hartford, Oxford Co, ME, d. date/place unknown. She married 1846 Hartford, Oxford Co, ME to Benjamin Thomas Jr,, b. 1819, Hartford Oxford Co, ME. Lovina's parents were Nathaniel Thomas and Sarah 'Sally' Thomas. Benjamin Thomas Jr's parents were Benjamin Thomas Sr, and Dorcas Russell. I think I sent you both of the parents data already in the list of Thomas' of MA>ME. If not, let me know. As to your connection with Chapin, the name may have just been that a Chapin was admired or was a friend. Good luck with the Sherman clue. .I need to do more searching on my maternal lines. They came from Quaker roots, and. they were Henley/Henly from England>PA>NC>on West. My grandfather Floyd Mason Henley married a Dixon/Dickson. The Dixon/Dickson(s) were from the Northeast, I don't know if the Dixon/Dickson line was Quaker or not, but Joseph Dixon/Dickson (his parents born CT) and his son Joseph Abraham Dixon were born in NY (according to Federal census only. No second proof, except land /purchases in IL and MO).. Are you aware of pockets of Quakers in the Northeast? I am only aware of a Delaware communtiy. I wish I were able to do some good old stomping through the bushes up there. 1. [THOMAS] THOMAS line from 1700 of Virginia
    2. Michele
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list. I'm researching the THOMAS line from 1700 from Hanover and Fluvanna Cos. in Virginia. William THOMAS born 1776 in Hanover or Fluvanna. Died in Fluvanna in 1876 just before his 100th birthday. We believe he was the son David Thomas of London, England according to family stories. Father might be David THOMAS of Albemarle Co. who married Anne RHODE. I would enjoy talking to other researches and share information. 2. Attention: jpool@cacr.caltech.edu I am very interested in your recent post to the Thomas line. My grandfather was William Thomas, b. in August of 1850 to David and Ann Clayton Thomas. William appears on the 1900 Census in Moreland Twp.,Montgomery Co., PA. My brick wall is Wales, where William's grandfather, Thomas Thomas, emigrated from in 1822 with his two-year old son, David. No mention of a wife or siblings for Thomas Thomas. It's possible (though unproven) that Thomas Thomas's father was a William, given the naming patterns of the time. My grandfather, William Thomas, married Clara Josephine Schmidt, daughter of Gustavus and Josephine De Latour Schmidt, who emigrated to the U.S. from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany in 1850. If any of this connects, please let me know. Thanks. Kasha ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. I am delighted to see all of the posts lately about the Thomases. I descend from Nathan Thomas of Newberry South Carolina. He was born about 1751 but I can not find where or to whom. He died about 1824 in Newberry. His wife was Mary Unknown. They had six children. The fifth, David, was my gg grandfather. He married Mary E Taylor. He was born 22 September 1806 in Newberry and died 9 July 1890 in Giles County Tennessee. Nathan's youngest child was named Nathan Tristram, which leads me to think that he is from the well documented Thomas Family of Talbot Maryland that has many members with the given name Tristram. However, I have not been able to make that connection. I also descend through Nathan's first born, Anna, who married John Marbut. Their youngest child, Louisa Caroline, married her cousin James F Thomas, son of David. Any assistance in cracking this rock wall will be appreciated. Jim Thomas.

    3. Hi Tom You are right, it is amazing how the families tie back together. It's like a woven bird nest. I just found out that I have grandparents Howland, so will add them to my list to study. The list keeps getting longer, not shorter....and I'm getting addicted to finding what or who comes next. My daughter-in-law even has a Thomas line in her tree. Nice to meet another cousin. Happy hunting, Jacque I have 2 Lovica Thomas' in my tree, but neither lists children, and only one is married-to a McGregor. No help there. Starting with Samuel b 1763 through David b 1620 Wales, we agree-even on the dates. We branch off at Samuel b 1763, but may connect again with this new data. About Roy Chapin Thomas: If you Google search (I Yahoo search) "Deacon Samuel Chapin genealogy MA" (without the quotes) you will find a rich history on the Chapins, especially Samuel who has a statue of himself in town square. He was a puritan. If you follow the descendants, you should run into Roy Chapin Thomas. Roy's ancestors may have married a Chapin. Our source was a book on the Chapin Family, but it's been since the 60's, and I was new....and failed to record the name of the book. I took the time to look through all my Thomas' and came up with these people who were from MA and moved to ME: (Have some children, but not grandchildren-on request) THOMAS: Jedeidiah, b. 1726/27 Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA, d. abt 1813 Hartford, Oxford Co, ME, married 1749 to Hannah ?Cushman?. He also married 1733 Plympton, Plymouth Co, MA to Keziah Churchill, b abt 1733, Plympton, Plymouth Co, MA, bur: Old Cemetery at the Green, Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. (Their daughter Abia, b. 1774 Middleborough,Plymouth Co, MA, married Abner Thomas, b 1765 Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA. Abner is my 3rd cousin 6 x removed) Elisha, b 1747 Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA, d. 1829 Oxford, Oxford, ME, married Elizabeth Morton II. Also married Rachel Weston, b 1754 Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA, d. 1796 Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA, bur: Old Cemetery (same as above) (He is my second cousin 7 x removed) Charity, b. 1765 Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA, d. Unknown date Possibly Hartford, Oxford Co, ME, married Simeon Granderson, b. date unknown place unknown, d. unknown (She is my 4th cousin 5 x removed) Nathaniel, b. 1780 Middleboro, Plymouth Co, MA, d. 1825 Hartford, Oxford Co, ME, married date/place unknown to Sarah (Sally) Thomas, b. 1781 Middleboro, Plymouth Co, MA, d. 1867 North Hartford, Oxford Co, ME (Her father Joseph Thomas Jr, mother, Deborah Thomas) (His father Lt. Perez Thomas (Deacon), his mother Sarah Wood II). (Nathaniel b. 1780 is my 4th cousin 5 x removed. His mother Sarah II is my half 3rd cousin 6 x removed) (Sarah Sally is my 4th cousin 5 x removed) Benjamin, b. 1785, Nathaniel's brother, also moved to ME. He married Dorcas Russell, b. Abt 1789 (no other info on this family) Tom Greenwood <TheGreenwoods1@Verizon.net> wrote: Hi Jacque Thanks for replying. Your information below has me curious, in particular, Chapin. But I will elaborate on that more shortly. My Thomas lineage is as follows: Oleta Thomas My grandmother b. abt. 1906 Roy Chapin Thomas Great Grandfather b. abt. 1883 Alfred Samuel Thomas 2nd Great Grandfather b. abt. 1846 Samuel Dexter Thomas 3rd Great Grandfather b. abt. 1816 possibly aka Dexter Samuel Thomas All in Monson and Abbott, Maine. Up to this point, There is a fair degree of certainty to the lineage. After this it appears to be as follows but still requires more certain evidence: Jedediah Thomas 4th Great Grandfather b. abt. 1793 Middleborough, MA Some Rootsweb and Family Search records indicate he was born in Sumner, ME but ths appears to be incorrect. Samuel Thomas 5th Great Grandfather b. abt. 1763 Middleborough, ME Eleazer Thomas 6th Great Grandfather b. abt. 1725 Middleborough, ME William Thomas 7th Great Grandfather b. abt. 1679 Unknown location David Thomas 8th Great Grandfather b. abt. 1649 Marblehead, MA David Thomas 9th Great Grandfather b. abt. 1620 Wales Starting with Samuel and working back, records appear to be very strong based upon published research by the New England Historic Genealogical Society and the Mayflower Society. The connection of Samuel Dexter to Jedediah and Jedediah to Samuel still requires stronger evidence. Also note that I have only listed the direct paternal lineage. The Thomas name also marries into Samuel's line and these ultimately tie into John Howland of the Mayflower and back into David Thomas senior listed above. It is amazing how many times ancestries around New England tie back together. Now, finally onto Chapin. Note that my great grandfather's middle name is Chapin. Surnames Chapin and Sherman appear to be very prominent in the early history of Monson, ME. Exactly how they connect to my great grandfather has yet to be determined, however, his niece indicated a few years ago that she had a second great aunt named Lovica Chapin nee Sherman. I have yet to be able to find the definitive connection to either name via the Thomas'. Well, hopefully not too much information. I look forward to hearing from you. 1. Re: [THOMAS] New England Thomas'
    2. My THOMAS ancestor is in Rhode Island and/or Connecticut. This ancestor, my second great grandfather, is my highest and thickest brick wall. George A. Thomas married Lucy R. Kenyon in 1856 at Hopkinton, Rhode Island. According to their marriage record in the Hopkinton Town Hall, George A. Thomas (age 22) was born in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. Based on his age at this time (age 22) he was born about 1834. I've been unable to corroborate his birth in the 1840 or 1850 Rhode Island Census, or in any vital birth record held in the town hall at Hopkinton, Connecticut. According to the marriage record of George A. Thomas, his father's name is also George Thomas. In neither the Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, or Massachusetts 1850 US Census there's no George Thomas with a son George A. Thomas about age 17, the age George A. Thomas would likely be in the 1850 census if he was born about 1833 or 1834. George A. Thomas' profession was blacksmith. I've found no records in Rhode Island or Connecticut indicating he owned any land or property, or paid any taxes. George A. Thomas, on his Civil War enlistment paper, indicates he was born in Voluntown, Connecticut. Based on his age at this time (age 28) he was born about 1833. I've been unable to corroborate his birth in the 1840 or 1850 Connecticut Census, or in any vital birth record held in the town hall at Voluntown, Connecticut. George A. Thomas died in 1863 in the US Civil War. His widow, Lucy, was awarded a widow's pension. I have about an inch of Lucy's widow's pension documents from the National Archives. Apparently Lucy had difficulty securing her widow's pension, and over a ten-year period of correspondence between Lucy, the War Department, Lucy's attorney, and numerous depositions by Lucy's friends and neighbors, there's not one reference to, or mention of, George A. Thomas' parents. Many pieces of correspondence and depositions concern custody of George and Lucy's two children, and yet there's no mention of the children's grandparents. In all the paperwork I've accumulated regarding this Thomas family, I've never seen an "official" document giving the middle name of George A. Thomas. If I knew for sure his middle name, perhaps this would give a clue as to where I should look further. Other family researchers "think" his middle name could be Amos or Arnold, but no one can produce an "official" document showing this. I'm quite open to suggestions as to where I should look next. 3. Yes, Frank, I remember you, and I thought there MUST be other people out there who descend from some of those children, but so far, I think you're the only one who has responded. I need a male Thomas who descends from Stephen Thomas, and the only one I know about is a Huel Thomas. The thing is, I don't know where he lives or if he is even still living. It seems likely that he is still in Alabama, somewhere. I will keep trying to find somebody who could do the DNA testing. I also wish I knew what county in North Carolina Stephen and Jane came from. Maybe then, we could also find out what Jane's maiden name was. Following is an excerpt from a very interesting article in the March 27, 2007 Deseret News. More than 25,000 volunteers are currently at work indexing the records. Running predicts there will be 100,000 volunteers by the end of this year and many hundreds of thousands in the years to come. [Derek] Dobson can demonstrate, online, just how easy it is to volunteer. Last week, in his office in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, Dobson, on his laptop, went to www.familysearchindexing.org and called up a registry. There were a half-dozen registries listed on the Web site - including Georgia death certificates from 1919-1927 and a federal census from New York State from 1900. (As each of these registries is transcribed, new registries will appear on the Web site.) Dobson clicked on a registry and a handwritten census record popped onto his screen, along with a blank form on which he was to type the handwritten names and dates. The handwritten record on his screen featured a family named Johnson, and the mother's first name seemed to be spelled "Allice," and her son's name looked to be "Clarience." Because these are not traditional spellings for "Alice" and "Clarence," when Dobson typed in those names, they came up with a note indicating he needed to double-check the handwritten records. This he did. To him, the names still looked like "Allice" and "Clarience," so that's how he left them when he finished transcribing the document. Dobson explains that there is an invisible double-check built into the system. Each handwritten record will come up twice, at random, and be typed in twice, by two different volunteers. Any discrepancies between the two forms will alert a third person, an arbitrator, who is a more experienced genealogist. The arbitrator looks at the original record and makes a final decision on the name or date or geographical location in question. In order to make volunteering easy and to let people feel they've accomplished something, the Family Search Indexing project assigns each volunteer only as many names as can be typed up in about 30 or 40 minutes. If your children are little, Dobson notes, you could put them down for a nap and do your volunteering by the time they wake up.
