Some young whippersnappers may call me elderly. I don't know why. I am only 75. I looked up the Thomas DNA Study and found the chart that has a column that heads Ancestor. There was an Isaac and John in South Carolina, both names appearing in the 1790 Newberry census, but how do I know if Nathan Thomas was related to one of them. Also, the long line of numbers tells me nothing. No doubt they are important to any one trained to deciiipher them. But what do they mean? Another question, what DNA evidence is available from my ancestor 200-300 years ago to match up with me? I can see how the bones of one who is known can be exhumed and match up with someone living today but obscure peasants of eons ago left no physical evidence of their having been on earth. Perhaps some of the younger more enlightened can help me out on this. Thank you all. Jim Thomas
Maybe you and others in your family who are interested in genealogy could share the cost of the DNA test. The test itself is very simple and totally painless and bloodless because all you do is use a test kit swab to rub inside your cheek, drop it into the provider holder, and mail it back to the lab. It would be so sad to miss this opportunity for the DNA test given your male Thomas relatives are elderly. Do any of these elderly Thomas gentlemen have male descendants that might be willing to participate? I'm an advocate of DNA testing for genealogical use because that is how my group of Thomases finally broke through a brick wall that we had been pounding on for thirty years and had finally concluded that our earliest known male Thomas ancestor had simply dropped onto earth from another planet. Did you read the pedigrees of those Thomas' who did take the DNA test? YOu can go to the Thomas DNA Study and click on patriarchs, and see if any one is familiar. To those who have responded to my questions on Missouri and Tennessee Thomas, I say thank you... The information on Nathaniel that James shared is a little more than I had and is encouraging, only if it just gave me one more fact.... Early in my search, I discovered that Francis Marion was probably named after the Francis Marion, It's amazing how one search will lead off into another... I wasn't too fond of history while in school, especially about any war... now I find myself wanting to know more and more... it's amazing how many wars have been fought within our borders. As to Thomas DNA studies, I'm afraid theeare no longer any male Thomas's in my line who are interested in doing a DNA study... the ones left are elderly, and if I had the money to pay for the test, they would probably not want to bother... but oh how I would like to find our line once and for all... even if I still wasn't able to pin down a specific person, I would at least know whether I'm on the right track... Unfortunately, it will not. You can learn more about FamilyTree's DNA projects at http://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspx. There are DNA projects other than the one by FamilyTree Maker, but I am only familiar with the FamilyTree setup. If you know of a male Thomas relative who doesn't like the cost of testing, anyone can register, pay for, and be the contact for that relative and have a test kit sent directly to him, which he will return directly to FamilyTree. FamilyTree has an excellent set of FAQs which cover the basics very well. According to the 1800,1810, and 1820 census for Newberry South Carolina, Nathaniel/Nathan Thomas was born about 1766. The place of his birth, or his parentage, is not known. His wife, Mary Unknown, may have been born a year or two before he. The 1800 census gives 4 females ages 0-10. These, we learn later, were Anna, b. 1795, d. 12 July 1859, m. John Marbut 30 July 1811, (See 1850 Giles Tenn. census) ; Zynthilthia/Syntyche, b. 17 Feb 1797, d. before 1840, m. Littleton Wright; Euodias, b. 21 Oct. 1799, d. 21 Aug. 1858 in Barry, Missouri, m. Philip Marbut 27 Feb. 1816; and an unknown daughter. The 1810 census gives 3 females ages 11-15 and 1 age 16-25. This last one is apparently Anna. It also gives 3 males ages 0-10. These would be Francis Marion, b. 25 Mar. 1802, d. 1853 in Limestone Ala., m. Susan Inman 1828; David, b. 22 Sep. 1806, d. 09 Jul. 1890, m. Mary Elizabeth Taylor; and Nathan Tristram, b. 1809, d. 28 Dec. 1893 in Barry Missouri, m. Elizabeth S Case 26 Oct 1843. Nathan's wife Mary died about 1814 in Newberry. He soon married Ann Inman, widow of Joshua Inman. She is not included in the 1820 census. However, 3 females ages 0-10 are given. They may have been children or grandchildren. The place of burial for Nathan Thomas and his wives is unknown but assumed to be in Newberry, South Carolina. Phillip Marbut, Daniel Marbut, Littleton Wright and Francis Thomas were Executors and Administrators of his estate. David Thomas bought several items of his estate. About 1835 all of the children of Nathan and Mary Thomas migrated to Giles County Tennessee and settled along the Alabama line. Some later moved on to Missouri. There are many descendants in those areas unto this day. Jim Thomas, descendant of David Thomas.
Goldie, I am leaving in a few minutes for Bible Study. I will try to write more to you tomorrow. I am descended from Nathaniel/Nathan Thomas of Newberry South Carolina through his son David Thomas, next in birth after Francis Marion. All of the children migrated to south Giles County Tennessee and north Limestone County Alabama about 1835. Your Francis Marion settled in Alabama. I too think that Nathan descended from the Tristram line in Talbot Maryland but have not been able to prove it I will try to write more tomorrow. Jim Thomas. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Goldie Williams" <goldiew@centurytel.net> To: <thomas@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2007 4:23 PM Subject: [THOMAS] Missouri Thomas & Tennessee Thomas & Nathaniel Thomas >I am a descendant of the very elusive Nathaniel Thomas from SC... sometimes >I think he must have been dropped from a flying saucer....my grandmother >was the daughter of William Robert Thomas who was the son of William >Francis Thomas who was the son of Francis Marion Thomas...and Francis >Marion was the son of Nathaniel Thomas, the one born about 1751-1761 and >was married to Mary ..last name unknown..... > > Anyone who has tried to find who spawned old Nathaniel knows how > frustrating it can be.... If you have _any_ living _male_ Thomas surname relatives, I encourage you to get one or more of them to participate in the FamilyTree DNA Thomas Surname Project (http://thomasdna.home.comcast.net). Current participants include descendants of Tristram Thomas of Marlborough District, SC and of his father Stephen Thomas of Anson County, NC; participation would tell you with a fairly high degree of certain whether your line is part of the Tristram Thomas line. Anyone who has tried to find who spawned old Nathaniel knows how frustrating it can be.... I'm so sure that he must be a part of the Tristram line..but as we all know, the link is invisable(so far) those of us bitten by the genealogy bug never quite give up hope... So..a few days ago when I attended the 80th birthday of a cousin...I heard two names that I had never heard before.... my Aunt told me that Grandmother (Susan Anna Thomas) had two aunts named Missouri and Tennessee ... she didn't know whether it was from the Thomas line or Parvin line and she didn't know whether they were aunts great aunts or what....grandmother just called them Aunt Missouri and Aunt Tennessee.... So I went on an online search...I found no Parvins named Missouri or Tennessee..but I did find several of each on the Thomas side.... so far I havn't been able to find sisters with those names, but I have just begun to saearch.... Do any Thomas's out there recognize these names ??? Nathaniel is rumored to have been born in SC.... Francis Marion also in 1802.... the family migrated to Missouri....and subsequent generations have been buried in Stone Co. and Barry County, Missouri..... Thanks for any help??? suggestions, anyone can give me.... Goldie Williams, Living in Missouri Ozarks
