They may have thought that he did die in the war. He just never went back. I have a copy of his war records and he was a prisoner twice. The last time he took the oath of the United States and walked. I think he may have come from a very staunch Confederate family and may have been afraid to go home. He stated in an affidavit that he had done all he could for his homeland and he did not want to rot in a prison camp, because it would not help anyone. Looking to locate SIM---SIMS----SEMIN---SIMON and other spellings of Sim Thomas who married Matilda Sullivan 21 Nov 1836 date on record in Blount Co, Alabama. From the 1850 Benton Co, Ala census record I find Sim Thomas as being deaf and dumb. and they had these children::::: Delila E. b/abt1839 Ala Jessty G. b/abt1841 Ala Mary Ann C. b/abt 1846 Ala Jane Ann b/abt1846 Ala Elizabeth b/abt1850 Ala Matilda Sullivan parents were Joel and Deliah Sullivan, so the child Delila name could be spelled several ways. The name Jessty I have no idea what this name is. I have been told thay they think Sim Thomas parents were Wiley A. Thomas and Rebecca Humphries. I have no idea. I find a Meml Thomas family in Benton Co, Ala census a/40 b/Ga who ius deaf and dumb also. This seems strange to me and make me wonder if this Meml and Sim were not very close kin. CAN ANYONE HELP. I THANK YOU-----------James E. Clark
Regarding David Price Thomas, while it turns out that I had the wrong connection to the Thomases, I did quite a bit of research into the branch that includes Abraham Thomas, born in Virginia, died in Ohio. Now, I'm doing this all from memory because a recent move of mine has all my paper records put away and my computer records inaccessible for the moment, but somewhere in that branch, a male Thomas married a female with the maiden name of Price and there ended up being quite a few kids with the name 'Price' incorporated into their name. If I were you, I would follow up on that information because the Thomases of that era seemed very apt to follow the old 'naming conventions'. I can't be more specific about that other than to tell you that a male named Price Thomas lived in Delaware County, Indiana and that the Abraham Thomas I'm referring to is 'that' Abraham Thomas, the son of Michael Thomas Sr, and Catherine Wayland. Good luck and hope that helps a bit. ************** Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. I do have access to Ancestry.com and none of us can find out anything about his parents, but I will check Ancestry again. We believe his parents died when he and sister were young and the two were bound out to a man by the name of Mathis. There is another story, that the parents died as they were coming to America on a boat and were buried at sea???? The children were bound out to pay for their passage??? I get tired of looking and put it away for a while and then something strikes my interest and I start again. Thank you again. Thank you for this tip. I'll sure check into it. My David Price Thomas lost his parents at an early age, or at least that's what we think as he and his sister were bound out. But who knows???? Well perhaps the story about him dying in the war was to cover for the embarrassment of his not returning to his family... Interesting that the youngest son would have also been named James. Another David, b. abt 1827, was the son of _______Thomas and Mrs. Lucretia Gracilla 'Grace' Hannah Thomas, b abt 1805. She was a widow in 1840 and appears in the 1840 Washington Co VA census with 2 sons purported to be David and John. This same person may have married John Barbary in 1832. If so, I don't know how her widowhood in the 1840 census fits into the picture. More research needed here. Grace was suppose to be in Sullivan Co TN at some point. I'll have to go to my hand written notes to check on that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 4:59 PM, Lynda <beckerw@ix.netcom.com> wrote: > Wanda, in all your searching, have you ran across a David Price Thomas b > 1822? Marilyn, You said "Michael and his family were in that part of Virginia that is now Washington Co., PA". Do you mean Washington Co Pennsylvania or Washington Co VA? Would like to correspond with anyone researching any connection to the above individual. He was born in TN, on the Robertson Co., TN 1850 census, after that on the Logan Co., KY census through 1880. Does anyone know where he was buried? Thank you for any information.
I am feeling so left out with all you THOMAS descendants in the south. Is no one looking for my THOMASES? My gggrandfather William THOMAS was born abt 1810 in Connecticut; married Eunice CUMMINGS 2 May 1841, Litchfield, CT. The first 6 of their children were all born in CT: George W. THOMAS (my ggrandfather) b. abt 1843 William R. THOMAS, b abt 1844 Henry THOMAS, b abt 1846 Charles E. THOMAS, b abt 1850 Sarah THOMAS, b abt 1851 John J THOMAS, b abt 1856 Ella THOMAS, b abt 1860 in Illinois Elsie THOMAS, b abt 1880, CT (this looks a little suspicious - census says Elsie b CT, but they were living in MI 1880) Do these names and dates resonate with any one out there? I am, of course, particularly interested in my great grandfather George--where he died after living in IA in the 1880s--and more about the early days and first marriage of his daughter, my grandmother Cora Ann, b 1881, IA. Her sisters were Minny Mae THOMAS, b abt 1873, MI, and sister Mable, b 1877, IL. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Kathleen VH
My Thomas family -- brothers Abraham, Jesse and others were born in Culpeper Co., VA and their father and uncle (Michael and John) left Virginia by 1770 with Michael's line ending up in Fayette Co., KY and John's line ending up in Guilford Co., NC. Before Kentucky, Michael and his family were in that part of Virginia that is now Washington Co., PA -- here is where the first 3 generations lived -- showing males only if you see any thing that looks familiar. James S. Thomas did not die in the Civil War. He was taken a prisoner and then he married my great grandmother Sara Elizabeth Maulden in Hamilton County, Tennessee. We were always told that he left home and never went back. He was a lot older than my great grandmother. This made us think he had another family before joining the war. Of all the research that I have done, I have come to the conclusion that the James S. Thomas that married Martha Anthony is our James S. Thomas. James S. did not die until he was in his 90s. I have a photograph of him when he was up in age. I think he left for the war and he never went back to his family. He would always beg his children to go back to Georgia and claim his inheritance. He said his father owned a plantation between two rivers in Georgia. Davie Williams Huntsville, Alabama **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living.
