    1. Re: [THOMAS] Black Irish
    2. Wanda Flesher
    3. I've read that the Black Irish go way back into Ireland. Occasionally, an Irish child is born who has dark eyes, hair, and skin color and is slightly darker than general Irish; thus, they're called Black Irish. I don't know about Black Dutch. Melungeons are believed to have developed in this country, pre-colonization, by a group of Portuguese shipwrecked sailors and others, off the coast of the Carolinas. The Indians in the area accepted them, intermarried with them, and those offspring were darker in color. Their descendants spread throughout Appalachia. Like Sue said, there are many web sites about them. To find one - 'Google' *Melungeon *in the search box, click go, and take your pick of the sites that will come up. The same process could be done with Black Dutch, etc. Wanda On Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 5:52 AM, Suanne Hill <suannehill@yahoo.com> wrote: > >From my reading, the Black Irish and Black Dutch and Melungeon were a mix > of Portugese sailors who for whatever reason lived in the hills and Indian > and other settlers. 1. Re: [THOMAS] Aaron THOMAS (1776-1883)
    2. Being Indian and/or Mulungeon had bad connotations; therefore, the term Black Dutch was often used to refer to either of the above. I think the other term was Black Irish. I also have read that some of the Cherokees who escaped the Trail of Tears took up this identity. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -----Original Message----- From: "Carolyn S. 3. I am jumping into this too, although I am not real sure what I can add. My mother told me that there were two Thomas families in the Hopkins/Christian/Caldwell County areas of Kentucky. Daddy wasn't allowed to associate with one of them. I am not sure now which was which, they two divisions were referred to as Black Roof and Red Roof. I have not been able to find out anything about this and have been trying to do so for several years. I wonder if one was the German branch and the other the ones that hailed from Wales. I guess that is as good a guess as any until someone can explain it. Could the 'Black Dutch' be the German Thomas line? . Virginia in Seattle ---- Original Message ----- From: "Carolyn S. 2. David Thomas
    3. Hello, cousins, I'm looking for the parents and/or siblings of Napoleon Roscoe THOMAS, b. abt 1883 in North Georgia (probably Fannin or Union County). m. 1903 to Minnie DEAVER (daughter of Reuben Miles DEAVER) in Gilmer County, GA (2 children) d. 1958, Daugherty County, GA. I've been told that he was the youngest of 10 siblings. His parents both died while he was still in school, so he was left to make his way in the world and lost touch with his siblings. He and his wife lived in Copperhill, TN, Mineral Bluff, GA, Augusta, GA, Milledgeville, GA and eventually Albany, GA, where he practiced medicine for many years. The DEAVER line is well-known--that was easy. I'm having trouble getting started on the THOMAS side. Any hints or suggestions will be appreciated. -- David Alan Thomas Sugar Land, TX

    3. Lou, Glad to share what little bit I have. I hope somewhere along the way it will help fill in a missing puzzle piece. Stephen Thomas, b abt 1815 in , , Virginia, USA. Married Elizabeth Grinstead on 8 July 1838, Washington Co., VA, USA. Elizabeth was born abt 1817 in Virginia. Children: Catherine, b abt 1839, VA Charles, b abt 1840, VA Edward, b abt 1842, VA Rhoda, b abt Mar 1850, VA Elizabeth, b abt 1852, VA Candacia, b abt 1858, VA Source: 1860 Washington Co Va census, own househld, age 45, b Va, day laborer, was citizen. Lived at Liberty Hall post office. Census number 1223 1173, page 164. Wife and children, info from same source. I have him in my data base, thinking he might be the son of my ggg grandfather, Lewis Thomas, Sr, b. abt 1760, of Washington Co VA. However, Reuben Thomas, father of Lewis Sr, has another son, John, and Stephen could be his son. Other possibilities may exist as well. That's what I have in a nut shell about a Stephen Thomas. I hope you find your Stephen.
