    1. genealogy site that appears to be selling its user list
    2. R.N. Tex
    3. Hello, this is in response to a post I recieved from another genealogy user list. I submit it for your awareness and I have added my own comments. It involves a "FREE" genealogy site that is apparently selling the information it gains from its subscriber base. If you are not interested, feel free to DELETE this message. I have checked the site out and it appears to be a "ploy" to subscribe members into an associatation that are then eligible for "discounts" on everything from insurance to mutual funds. If you try to go to the link at the end of the message, you may get incorrectly directed as the URL tends to get truncated. Add the "truncated line" to that URL and you will find the following message: Family Tree House Software Registrants This is a file of 33,600 last-12-month registrants of the Family Tree House, an association that offers Web site members free software and links to genealogy sites. Members are also qualified for group rate discounts on a variety of family oriented services including information on insurance and healthcare plans, travel programs and mutual funds available at the site. Cost: $85/M Selections: Date of birth, gender, e-mail address, state/SCF/ZIP Contact: RMI Direct Marketing Inc., 203-798-0448 For those that may not be informed, the $85/M is the cost of the list...$85 per thousand names. My comment on this site is that if they...or any site...wishes to offer services to the public for the purpose of building either membership or mailing lists, FINE. But they should inform you at registration that you may be either solicited or added to marketing lists for solicitation purposes. In fact, that is what most online "E-zines" are...free informational services that are subsudized by ads placed inside the "zine" itself. I know that going in and understand it, very much like the ads that are placed in TIME or NEWSWEEK. I subscribe to many of these types of E-zines. But I have a problem with being in lists that are sold...any lists, and I have a problem with NOT being informed that my name may be sold in a list. *********** BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE *********** On 10/31/98, at 10:16 PM, Jerry Wright Jordan <jjordan2@ix.netcom.com> wrote: I subscribe to the Eastman's Online Genealogy Newswletter. Jerry The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 1998 by Richard W. Eastman and Ancestry, Inc. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - Genealogy Web Site Sells Your Name and E-mail Address It's a tough world. Lots of businesses sell their customer lists these days. The result is that you get junk mail and marketing phone calls from all sorts of companies trying to sell you something you probably don't want. The newest twist is "spam mail", unwanted e-mails that advertise all sorts of junk. Now a well-known genealogy Web site is contributing to the spam mail that you receive and apparently is profiting from personal information that they obtain from you under the guise of helping you do genealogy research. In fact, the Web site apparently is a "front", as the main purpose seems to be gathering personal information about you and then selling that information. The Family Tree House Web site at http://www.usaafter.com claims that it is "the Association for FamilyTree Enrollment and Registry." The home page says, "This site offers free family tree software and links to key genealogy sites. The software is available on-line. You can build your FamilyTree House in real time, no downloading is required." They also say, "...you can create and register your own on-line FamilyTree. And because it is on-line, you can enlist the help of other family members by giving them your personal access code to allow them to fill in the missing branches--it's a project the whole family can participate in no matter where they live." On another page the site advises, "When requesting information, please make sure you include your name, mailing address and the information you would like." After they collect all the personal information from you and your other family members, the owners of Family Tree House apparently package the information and sell it to other companies that send junk mail or spam e-mails. On a different Web site, the owners of Family Tree House offer "a file of 33,600 last-12-month registrants of the Family Tree House, an association that offers Web site members free software and links to genealogy sites." The file they sell reportedly contains information about each person's date of birth, gender, e-mail address, state and ZIP code. The Web advertisement says that the file contains listings for 33,600 people who have left personal information on the Family Tree House site. 3. I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Mark Thomas. I have no information on him other than a few children's names. He had a son, Thomas, a daughter, Solie (who married an Oakley), and a daughter, Nellie Mae (My grandmother) who married Winfred Cleveland Shelton, and another daughter, Maggie (who married a Mr. Ray, and lived in Bisby, Arizona at the time of Solie's death in 1966). I believe the family to be from Ky, because my grandmother was born in Sebree, Webster county, Kentucky in 1898. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and happy hunting! Tina

    3. Hello All I am researching a THOMAS line in AUSTRALIA who originated in Glamorganshire South Wales. Details as follows THOMAS David, Mary and Mary Jane Thomas (aged 7 months) arrived in Van Diemans Land (Tasmania AUS) on the ship "Merlington" on October 20 1854. (from Newbridge Glamorganshire South Wales.) When they made their way across to the Victorian Goldfields is unknown, however another child Winefred (or Gwen) was born in Buninyong in 1857 quickly followed by three more children. Emanuel in 1860, William Henry in 1863 and Thomas in 1867. In 1867 David Thomas is listed as the owner of the Exchange Hotel in Clunes Victoria. It is not long after this time that David Thomas seems to have disappeared, as Mary is found to be living under the name of Meredith and had had three more children, Joseph born 1870, Ann born 1873 and Thomas born 1875 with the father listed as Daniel Meredith. When Mary Jane Thomas married in 1872 her father was listed as "being out of the colony" and D.Meredith was a witness at the wedding. Mary Thomas/Meredith died in November 1895 and was buried as Mary Thomas and is buried in her daughters Mary Jane CHAPMAN's family grave in the Clunes cemetery. On her death certificate her children are listed as follows; John 43 yrs, Mary Jane 41 yrs, Winnefred 39 yrs, Emmanuel dec., William Henry 31 yrs, Thomas dec., Joseph 24 yrs, Annie 22 yrs and Thomas 20 yrs. Her son William Henry was also the informant on the Death certificate. On the certificate we are surprised to find a son listed prior to Mary Jane born in Wales circa 1852, unfortunately with the name being so common, it has been hard to ascertain what become of him. Win or Winnefred may have married an Alexander Mc Alister in 1852 in Clunes. A son was born in 1889 in Clunes also named Alexander. A search of the Vic BDM's and the Clunes cemetery register has found no further trace of Gwen. Emmanuel also remains a mystery, born in 1860 the only mention found of him is on his mother's death certificate in 1895 where he is listed as deceased. A search of the Vic BDM's found no death record. William Henry born in 1863 seems to have stayed in the Clunes area as a miner all his life. He may have married a Elizabeth Payne in Clunes. A daughter Marjorie Gwen was born in 1904. He died in Clunes in 1925 and is buried in the Clunes Cemetery by himself. The youngest of the THOMAS children Thomas born in 1867 died in 1869 and is buried in the Chapman family grave in the Clunes Cemetery. David and Mary MEREDITH lived in North Clunes in a house on the corner of Albert street and Angus street until Mary died. This is much more information on their children if required. Joseph died in 1927, Ann died in 1947 and Thomas died in Western Australia in 1875. Thanks and regards Leonie Mutimer Searching here, searching there, searching MUTIMER everywhere. 3. I'm looking for info on Maynard THOMAS, born on 15 October 1823 in NY (possibly Cortland Co.). He married Mary PERRY, daughter of Joab PERRY and Jane CRAWFORD, on 15 October 1848 in Convis Twp., Calhoun Co., MI. They had four children: Hattie, b. circa 1849 Edson, b. circa 1854 Charles, b. circa 1862 Mary Belle, b. 24 Apr 1869 Around 1866 or 67, the family moved from Calhoun County, Michigan to Ottawa, Kansas. Maynard and Mary both died there in early 1900. In all the exploring I've done, I have never come across another Maynard. It is believed that his parents came from Mass. Given the times, he was probably not an only child, but I have no info on his siblings. Does anyone have a Maynard Thomas in their files??? Thanks, Bill Reace For E-Mail use - breace@mindspring.com

    3. My brick wall with my Thomas family is Jacob THOMAS born before 1755 in Pennsylvania or Wales or elsewhere, different census information gives different options. He may have been from a part of Pennsylvania that is now Maryland. Jacob and his first wife had six children, her name is unknown. They were the parents of my ancestor, Enoch THOMAS born 10 June 1785 in Pennsylvania somewhere. Jacob THOMAS of Belmont County bought land in Guernsey County in 1812. Jacob along with Enoch and Charity Thomas sold 50 acres of this quarter section to William Bigham in 1814. Another 50 Acres was sold to James in 1814 and 70 acres to Jacob Junior in 1816 by Jacob Sr. and his wife Mary. There is a marriage certificate #99 filed 2 May 1815 between Jacob Thomas, Sen. and Mary Brown by Peter Umstat JP. The other marriages on the page are in 1814. A Jacob Thomas appears in the Guernsey County census in 1820 and 1840. In 1850, a Mary Thomas, age 90 is living in the household of Cyrus Thomas, Jacob Jr.'s son. Enoch, Jacob Jr. and James and Ephraim are listed as serving in the war of 1812. Enoch in Wolfe's History, Jacob and James in Sarchet's History and Ephraim in Belmont County History. Jacob and Enoch are children of Jacob Sr. James, Elizabeth, Ephraim and Rebecca are all possible siblings. Enoch married first Charity Shipman and second Anna Ayres Dilley. I have lots more information after the family moved to Ohio and then on to Knox county, Illinois. 3. Hi Beverly, I eagerly read your posting today about John Thomas of Champaign Co OH, but by the third line realized that your John Thomas was not the same person as my most wanted Thomas, one of the four other John Thomas's of Champaign Co OH about that same time period. Mine married Sarah Owen Nov 6, 1789 in Harrison Co VA (now WV), had a daughter Elizabeth Thomas there Jun 20, 1796, and moved to Champaign Co OH before 1816. Unknown birth date, location, and parents, and also unknown death date/location.... same with wife Sarah Owen. Daughter Elizabeth married John Lupt Meredith Sep 16, 1816 in Champaign Co, and they had at least 3 children there 1817 through 1823. Elizabeth may have had a sister Esther Thomas who married John's brother Joseph Meredith in 1823 in Miami Co OH. Both marriages were officiated by John Thomas, J.P. Since you were able to sort out YOUR specific John Thomas from this tangle of Thomases in Champaign Co, did ;you happen to run across any info on MY John Thomas?! Thanks for any info. 3. I have the THOMAS person but it is his family that is most wanted. My THOMAS person is PHILIP P. THOMAS, born in 1821 in Bedwelty, Momouthshire, Wales and died on March 8, 1885 in Frostburg, Allegany Co. Maryland, USA. He married ANN DAVIS on February 8, 1854 in Dowlais, Glamorgan County, Wales. I have the marriage registration and it states that Philip's father was Benjamin (deceased) and Ann's father was Samuel. Philip was a widower with a daughter, Sarah, born in 1844. I think his first wife was Mary. I found Philip with Mary and daughter Sarah in the 1851 census in Merthyr Tydfil and the ages were right so I assumed this was my Philip. Philip and Ann had a daughter Margaret Ann (my grandmother) born March 30, 1855. Philip brought his family to America on the ship Alexander into the Port of Phila. arriving July 20, 1857. They settled in Frostburg Maryland where Philip was a miner. I know this is part of somebody's THOMAS family. I have been trying to find someone in Wales related to my family as I have no information of Philip's brothers and sisters. I am also chasing down a Benjamin THOMAS, born c. 1793, that came to Frostburg, Maryland, USA in 1838 with his family to work in the George's Creek Mining Co. With him was his wife, Hannah, born c. 1798; children John, born c. 1815; Benjamin, born c. 1818; James Benjamin, born c. 1820; William, born c. 1823; Diana, born c. 1832; Joseph Benjamin, born 24 Apr 1835;Philip, born c. 1836 (we never found him in any records after the ships records); Jane, born 16 Apr 1837; Ann E, born c. 1839; Maria Ellen, born 17 Aug 1841. It's a long story but in one of my family's obit it states they were related to this family. As you can see I'm looking for a whole family and I might even have it, I just have to prove it, but there are a lot of holes to plug up. Thanks for any help. Lois Hopkins
