    1. Re: "Our Kinsman" a book on the THOMAS family
    2. Craig Bickle -SLO
    3. Since I happen to have Thomas ancestors AND am a librarian at the State Library of Ohio, I received the below message and am happily able to answer your question. Our library owns two copies of "Our Kinsmen" plus a copy of the index which was published separately in 1998. At SLO, books in our genealogy collection do not circulate, but those in our regular stacks do. This is pertinent because one copy of "Our Kinsmen" and the index are in the genealogy room. The second copy is in the stacks. So, you have two options, Diane. If you would like to look at both books you could drive down to Columbus since you live in Marion, and use both volumes. OR, you could visit your local public library and request that the available copy be sent via inter-library loan. Since we have at least one circulating copy of this book, you are assured that it is accessible to you through ILL, although your library may not request our copy if they find another more convenient copy available at another library. Inter-library loan is an option for anyone who has borrowing priveleges from any public library. I noticed someone else asked for information concerning "Our Kinsmen". ILL is just as convenient an option for someone who lives far from an owning library as near to one as Diane does. I've taken the time to explain ILL to this group because it is often an overlooked resource, especially for those seeking family histories. The only drawback is the time it takes to receive the book. It usually takes 3-6 weeks, but occasionally longer if the book is checked out at the time of the request. Also, in this case the very useful index cannot be loaned from our library. However, you can still request this index at your library. Your ILL librarian can find out if another library owns a copy, and will make the request for you if so. The bottom line is, any book is possibly available through ILL at your public library. Always ask at your public library first. They have the ability to find a copy for you. BTW, anyone have a Sarah Thomas of Indiana who married Charles E. Bickle in 1894? This is all I know about my great grandmother, and I've been scanning this list for possible mention of her people for several months to no avail. Maybe this method will give me better luck. 3. There were 17 Thomas Cherokee in Starr's genealogy of Old Cherokee families. They can be found in the index to his book, found at the site http://members.aol.com/rarebk Note there is no www in the address. Also at the site is a Cherokee 'how-to' tutorial explaining how to do Cherokee genealogy research, the Cherokee 1835 census, and a number of other Cherokee genealogy resources (as well as other rare genealogical works). Once at the site, go to BOOKLISTS and scroll down till you see the Cherokee TUTORIAL and the other books. 1. William A(?)drew Thomas Spartanburg, SC
    2. I am searching for information on William Andrew Thomas (B abt 1844 in Spartanburg or Laurens Cty, SC- d.?) He married Mary Ann Frances Calvert (b. 4 April 1852-d.? d/o Ephrim Merada Calvert and Frances Elizabeth Hobby) on 23 December 1869 in Spartanburg County near Woodruff, SC. I think both may be buried in the old Unity Baptist Church (near Woodruff, DSC) graveyard however it is so overgrown it cannot even be found now (I have been told, I don't quite know where to look) My aunt supplied the above data and I do not know where it came from. I have been able to verify some from census records and can add the following from will and Calvert book which was lost after my aunt's death: Children of William A Thomas and Mary Ann Frances Calvert: Samuel Calvert Thomas b. 19 Oct. 1870- d. 12 July 1933; m. 1. New to the list
    2. Hello... I'm new to this list, so I apologize in advance if this is a family that has already been covered. If anyone can provide assistance or help though, I appreciate it. I am researching the following family: Elizabeth Thomas, b. abt 1652 in Bristol, England; m. Edward Talbott abt 1679 in Anne Arundel, MD; d. sometime before February 24, 1724 or 1725. Elizabeth's parents were: Phillip Thomas and Sarah Harrison Elizabeth's grandfather was: Evan Thomas I have the following information that is claimed to be from a Thomas genealogy book. Does anyone have any information that can tell me more about this book? "Member of Merchantile House of Thomas and Devonshire. Philip Thomas was the son of Evan Thomas of Swansea, Glamorganshire, Whales. Descended from Sir Rhys ap Thomas, K.G. of Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, South Wales, 1449-1525, and his son Sir Griffith ap Rhys, who married Lady Katherine Howard, daughter fo the second earl of Norfolk, descended from King Edward I of England {The Thomas Book, 1896}." If you have any information that you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd love to hear from you. Thank you so much for your assistance.

    3. Happy New Year THOMAS family descendents, I have information to share and I hope it helps someone out there. Here is a mini list of what I have. David THOMAS arrived in Wellinborough, Burlington Co., NJ from Wales in 1742. He and his wife Margaret had Thomas THOMAS 30 Jan 1761.There may have been other children, possibly Timothy, but I have no documentation. Thomas married Mary GRIMES 20 Feb 1783. Their first child Samuel was born 2 Dec 1785. in Burlington Co. NJ. I'm guessing that after their second child, Benjamin, they moved to PA around 1788.Thomas may have been awarded two pieces of property, one in Westmoreland Co.,PA and the other in Guernsey Co., Ohio as a result of his service in the Rev. War, but I am conjecturing regarding the award. However Samuel did live on Thomas' property in Ohio. Samuel married Elizabeth LA RUE at the Redstone Church in Fayette,Co.PA, 5 Feb. 1807 and had 10 children listed below: Abigail THOMAS born 1807 married Zaccheus Van Meter Mary Ann THOMAS born 1809 married Rev. J. H. WHITE Sarah THOMAS born 1811 married Mr. CRAWFORD Thomas THOMAS born 1813 married Susan CAROTHERS Abraham THOMAS born 1816 Timothy THOMAS born 1 Mar 1817 married Eliza CAROTHERS Gllaves THOMAS born 1819 Margaret Ann THOMAS born 1822 married Benjamin WHITE Jane THOMAS born 1824 married Samuel RICHARDSON William THOMAS born 1830 married Margaret JONES The information I have came from descendents of Samuel who wrote to my grandfather who was the THOMAS family historian. Also, he recorded this information from wills and Bible records that had been transcribed. Please fill me in if there is more information on these families. Somes of the relatives who wrote my grandfather didn't disclose all data, such as place of birth etc.,or all the descendents. Jan <chuckles@iserv.net>

    3. Happy New Year to all THOMAS members, Some time ago, I posted this list of marriage licences from the New Jersey Colonial Documents book that I got from the FHC. Hope it helps someone discover their ancestors and not confuse the problem. Maybe there's a person that you recognize here?? My David THOMAS married Margaret LUCAS. David's one brother may have been Timothy, who married Margaret's sister, Elizabeth LUCAS. David and Margaret begat Thomas THOMAS, who married Mary Ann GRIMES. They in turn moved to Westmoreland Co.,PA and begat 12 children, ten of whom had children. Hence, the source of my grandfather's genealogy book. The one question that I have is Thomas THOMAS may have had brothers and sisters that I have no knowledge of, who may have gone to Westmoreland Co., with him around 1788. 3. There are Thomas families mentioned in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Genealogy, vol IV, which covers Western PA and Ohio as early as the 1790's. These families are coming north out of Virginia, North & South Carolina and Georgia. The Meeting mentioned are Redstone [Fayette Co.], Westland [Washington Co.] and Swickley [Westmoreland Co.]... The problem is Hinshaw is not complete so the original minutes of these early records needs to be found and read but it would be worth the effort for the clues it might divulge. 3. Hi Laura and List members, I have a Bible record of 12 children of Thomas THOMAS who was born in Wellinborough, Burlington Co.,NJ in 1761. His father was David THOMAS from Wales and his mother was Margaret Lucas. Thomas moved to Rostraver Twp.,Westmoreland Co.,PA around 1786 after serving in the Rev. War. I believe he was given this property as reward for his military services. Thomas married Mary GRIMES 20 Feb 1783. First child, that was listed in the Family Bible was Samuel born 2 Dec 1785. David THOMAS had two brothers who came with him from Wales around 1740. One stayed in the area for a bit then moved to VA. and the other moved to NC. at least that is what was reported by descendents. I only have record of Thomas THOMAS, but have often wondered if he had brothers and sisters. If so, maybe they came with him and settled in Washington Co.? Rostraver Twp., is across the river from Washington Co. and there was ferry service. Jan

    2. Greetings Fellow THOMAS listers! I have recently received a lead in my most elusive THOMAS quest and hope someone out there can lead me further. A family story states that Jonathan THOMAS (1783-1867) was born in Washington County, PA before angrily leaving home at a young age and ending up in Seneca County, NY. In NY he married Nancy SCOTT, formerly of Connecticut. We have nothing on his early family in Pennsylvania except another family story that says our progenitor THOMAS was one of 3 Welsh brothers. Do any of you have a THOMAS connection in Washington County, PA (south of Pittsburg) for mid to late 18th century? I am grateful for any assistance and happy to share what I have.
