Of all the many queries about THOMASs online; I've not seen the given name of Abraham. My maternal ggf was also Abraham THOMAS b/about 1850/60s. He married Lydia HUGHES, another mystery. Their daughter, Edna Bella THOMAS b/1887 d/1929 Benwood, W.Va. m/Clement Thurman GIVENS b/1884 Captina, Belmont Co., Ohio. Clemens's family lived in Short Creek, Brooke Co., W.Va. at one time. Any connection with Sampson Abraham THOMAS of the Carolinas? Thanks for your time. Audrey
Daer Cousins: I am new to the Thomas list. My family ties to to the Thomas family through Betsy Thomas who married Aaron Stallings 1815 in Christian Co., Ky. I believe Betsy to be the Daughter of Zadock Thomas who appears in Trigg County, Ky in the 1820's. In the 1820 Trigg Co., Ky census he lives next door to Aaron and Betsy Stallings. I believe Zadock may be related to James Thomas II, the father of the Trigg Co. Ky Thomas Family. Does anyone have any info on this family? I show the family line as: 1. John Thomas bc 1585 Caramarthenshire, Wales d abt 1653 York Co., VA, m. Dorothy? 2. John Thomas, Jr 3. Richard Thomas, bc 1629, m Elizabeth Marshall 4. John Thomas, bc 1648, m. READING OLD HANDWRITING. Shared info from a genealogy friend. Take a look my be something you can use. http://www.firstct.com/fv/oldhand.html I found it pretty interesting as a tutorial style lesson for those who wish to delve into probate records and land records in their research. Pass it on to others you feel would benefit from/enjoy this.
Hi, I'm a relative "newbie" and am hoping some of you may know of the Polish name change from TOMASZEWSKI(A) to the Americanized version of THOMAS. If anyone has information on this please contact me. My Uncle used this change in the Pittsburgh PA area and had 13 siblings that may have come to this country and done the same. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Judy Campbell in Las Vegas NV
Hi, Thanx to Betty, i learned that there are some problems with the new version of Family Tree Maker 5.0. I haven't used my program enough to encounter any of those problems, yet, but i went to their site and was able to download an upgrade free of charge. The upgrade is 5.0b and it is supposed to correct any problems that we may have with 5.0 or 5.0a. It took me about 15 minutes to download 5.0b and it setup fine. Thought that some others may want to download the upgrade, too, before they start experiencing problems with the program. Just type in http://www.familytreemaker.com & it will take you to the upgrade. Pat
I want to thank all of you who responded to Cuyahoga County my marriage record question. I was overwhelmed with the amount of help I received. Many of you just wrote letters of encouragement and congratulations. When I first started this my sister warned me that genealogy people are the nicest people you will ever encounter. Well, that was the understatement of the century!! I even had one women offer to get a copy of the certificate for me that day! It arrived in my mail box this morning! I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful group of people. Finally to Melanie; I pray someday you will find a box full of old papers just to fill in the branches on your tree! I admit it, I am VERY BLESSED that my mother in law is a pack rat. I have some original German traveling papers dating back to 1803. Unfortunately, I can't read a word of German and the lettering is difficult to translate into modern lettering.Someday I hope to find someone who can help me with it, but for now that branch of the family tree lies dormant. My goal for this next year is to go through the huge box of photos my mother in law has and label them so if anything happens to her we'll know which ones are family and which are not. I thank you all again for your help and may all your searches be as fruitful as mine! Elayne
You all saw the Blondie comic strip today? If not the exchange between Dagwood and Mr. Dithers goes as follows: Mr. D.: Have you ever traced your family tree, Dag? Dag: No, I hear that's really expensive. Mr. D.: I know how you can get your complete family history done for free Dag: Really, how's that? Mr. D.: Run for public office. Or is that just a variation on a genealogy joke that's been around for ages?
Hi to all: On the subject of the FTM CDs, the only CDs that I found to be of value are the 1850 US Census CDs of Virginia and Kentcky. They provide an index, and pretty good images of the census sheets themselves. There is also a zoom function which allows you to more closely study either faint images, or handwriting styles. And at $49.95 per state, it beats the heck out of having to pay the per roll prices for microfilm from the National Archives. But I have ancestors from each of those states, so they obviously would not help everyone. In my opinion, as it relates to my family research, the other CDs have been a huge waste of time and money. Hi all, I too purchased 5.0 with the 11 CD's. I did find some info but I rather doubt that I will purchase many more. I did understand that if you purchase CDs and you don't find what you are looking for you may return them as long as they have not been damaged. I have a friend who is using her Fam. T. M. W. (windows) for doing reports, books and such but is using Legacy for research as it is done on line. Haven't had the time to ask her more about it. Anyone else out there using it with some suggestions? Betty in Idaho PS There is a 5.0 upgrade already which is supposed to take care of some of the problems 5.0 has been having.
I just found the site I was thinking of for FTM CD look-ups. I've used them several times and they have been very friendly and surprisingly fast. http://www.seidata.com/~lhoffman/cdlist.html Mike
Though I whole heartedly agree that the best research is done with records and reliable books, I have found the Family Tree Maker CD's a very valuable tool in my research. The best way to make sure that you won't get stuck with a CD that you don't need is to do a little research about the entries first. Do a search at the Family Tree Maker web site to see where potential relatives a located on a CD. There is a wonderful web site of volunteers that will do look-ups for you of CDs that they own. The CDs are also valuable for not only finding relative dead and gone but those that are still alive. I have made a wonderful connection with a family member that we hardly new where they were. But because he had submitted his information to be on the World Family Tree and I found it, now we are able to reunite that side with mine. Granted when it comes to documentation, Family Tree Maker CDs ARE NOT the way to go. But they do make a helpful aid in the search for the past and present. Mike Snow
Jan Bates, You asked for advice about Family Tree Maker. I have bought new version after new version. Now, I have Version 5.0. Also, I have bought over 30 of the very expensive CDs. I HAVE NEVER FOUND A SINGLE ANCESTOR WITH THEM.. Also, the data is not proved, anyway. As more CDs come out, more junk is entered on the CDs. Since you have the program, I advise that you use it to record your own family information. It is good to make fancy charts of your family. I have proved 42 ancestors to the SAR. The best way to research is to find documents and to work with reliable books. Start with your parents and carefully work back in time, proving each step. In my humble opinion, Family Tree Maker has a lot of money hungry people. If you have unlimited funds to throw away, go ahead. ametts@juno.com ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I agree with Albert on the program. Someone has submitted information on my RICH line and the majority of what was entered on my immediate family is in error. Guess it's there to stay for others to view. For instance, i was married in '63 & our dau was born in '64. The disk states that i was married in '64 & our dau was born in '64. That's only one big error. Personally, i don't think that others should submit information on another's family members, if those members are still living. I would leave that up to them to submit. I bought Family Tree Maker in Nov & received 10 disks with it. So far, they haven't shown me anything outstanding. I also thought that by purchasing the program, i would have special privileges on their site, but not so. I haven't been able to do any more there than i did before i bought the program. Maybe i expected too much, but for what you pay for this "stuff", I suppose you should expect more. Pat Weaver Alabama
Hi--I am sure it is frustrating to see your names and the promise of information, but no you do not need to go out and buy all of those CD's. First of all, it would be prohibitively expensive, and second, the people may not even be yours. There are millions of people with the same names. So what to do? There is a site that has volunteers who have already purchased all of those disks and are willing to do lookups. Here is one, I am sure there are others. http://www.greenheart.com/rdietz/cd-rom.htm Try a few of the more "sure" lookups and see what you get. As for the World Family Tree discs--take what you get there with a grain of salt. It was submitted by people searching their own ancestors. Some of what you get is documented, but not all. Some is just educated guessing. I have found many many errors in this material. What thtey are good for is finding a person who has searched in your line and you can then correspond with that person to verify thier details. Good luck and welcome to a fascinating hobby! Debbie
I have been searching for sometime for Martin Thomas who married Eliza McLain. Both were as per 1850 US census from SC. Martin was b ca 1829, Eliza b ca 1828. The 1850 US census had them in Livingston parish Louisiana with two children William b 1845 and Ephriam b 1847. Have not been able to connect with any of the other Thomas lines that are being discuss on the Thomas-L queries. I am at a brick wall trying to find these folks parents or siblings. Any clue, lead or info regarding this Thomas line would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Meade Thomas
