When you go to the LDS Family History Center, they will have a catalog, either on microfiche or computer CD, (or both) depending upon the resources of the branch. This is a catalog of all the holdings of the main LDS Family History Center is Salt Lake City, Utah. It is basically their "card catalog". You can search by either name or location. When you come up with something that you would like to see, the entry will tell you whether it is available on either microfilm or microfiche (the rolls or the single sheets) and whether or not it is lent to the LDS Family History Center branches. (Many people donate items without authorizing that it be copied and/or lent out; if that is the case, you must go to Salt Lake to see it!) If it can be lent, for a small fee (I believe still $3.75 each for film and $.15 a sheet for fiche), you can order it. It will normally take between 7 and 14 days to arrive. The branch can normally keep it for about a month for you, with the option to renew for another month. Meanwhile, you cannot leave the premise with it, so must find time (when the branch is open) to search the film/fiche. Since I volunteer occasionally at our branch, if you have any more questions, I would be happy to answer if I can. -Annette On Sat, 06 Feb 1999 16:39:26 -0800 Michael Snow <midyucca@earthlink.net> writes: >Dear Annette, > >You touched on something that I'm not familiar with. Hi, When you go to the FHC as one of the librarians to help you with the Family History Library Catalog on the computer. You will find every thing that is available from SLCFHC. A great resource. I might suggest that if you find a film that has a lot of information you just might want to pay a little extra and put it on indefinite loan. I have let the films go back and then find that I have to reorder. When you order the information on Fiche, those Fiche are not returned to SLCFHC, only the films unless put on indefinite as I said earlier. I am DESPERATE here.. been looking for over 2 years for the parents of Mary Thomas born about 8 May 1808 in PA. This is what I know: She lived in Columbia County, PA as early as 1840. She married John Loro(w) and I cannot find his parents either. In the 1840 census there was an elderly couple living with them, but of course in 1840 the census was age only with head of household. They moved in the 1850's to Steuben Co., NY. Any ideas??? Kelly Taft Krause
Below is a Will from Northnumberland Co., PA, 1791, with mention of Susannah (Neuman [Neiman]) married to Jacob THOMAS. I believe this is my Neuman/Neiman family but also trying to figure out who this THOMAS could be. I do have an ancestor, Jacob THOMAS from Northnumberland Co., PA., that married a Margaret, according to Will information, that migrated to Knox Co., probably by 1790, maybe a little earlier or a little later?, then Blount Co., TN. Their son Jacob THOMAS, Jr. b. c1780 PA married Margaret Elizabeth NEIMAN b. c 1787, married in 1812 in Blount Co., TN. The THOMAS in the Will info may or may not be of the same THOMAS Line. So very confusing. Is there anyone who may know about Jacob THOMAS who married Susannah NEUMAN? Dear Annette, You touched on something that I'm not familiar with. The LDS films. I go to the Family History Center on a regular basis, but was not aware that you could order things from them. What type of information can you get? Mike
Thank you so much for stepping forward with a positive comment. I hesitated because I felt this subject was slightly off-topic. I, too, feel that the software program is one of the best on the market. I have also purchased *several* of the CDs. While some of them have had tons of information on several of my lines, I also have several lines to which they do not apply. This is an area in which no one can make a prediction. I have also ordered *tons* of films from my local LDS Family History Center, which have an associated cost (although minimal). From the catalog description, many of them seemed to have information applicable specifically to my research, but when I actually got the films, they did not. It certainly *never* occurred to me to "blame" the Family History Center. In my opinion, this is what some people seem to be doing in regard to the FTM CDs. Family Tree Maker repeatedly states it's no-questions-asked return policy on *opened and used* software. I have returned CDs and they honor their policy. What further steps would you have them take? -Annette ----- AnnetteAllen@juno.com For any attached files use: aallen@pacbell.net See my homepage at: <A href="http://home.pacbell.net/aallen/index.html"> Reach or page me at ICQ: <A href="http://wwp.mirabilis.com/14988389"> Send E-Mail directly to my computer screen using: 14988389@pager.mirabilis.com ----- On Fri, 5 Feb 1999 00:57:36 EST Sundea2@aol.com writes: >I have been reading the messages posted about Family Tree Maker CD's. >I agree >wholeheartedly about thoroughly documenting the CD's information. I have found the CD's helpful and I have returned some with no hassle as well.
I have been reading the messages posted about Family Tree Maker CD's. I agree wholeheartedly about thoroughly documenting the CD's information. I do this even with material that is considered extremely "reliable." However, I do not agree that the CD's are worthless or costly. I have made many good contacts by searching through the databases on these CD's. Also, Family Tree Maker has a guarantee on all of their CD's----if you don't find them useful to your research or if you can't find any of your relatives on them, you can return them for a refund (within a reasonable period of time). I've never had a hassle with them on this point. Their staff is courteous and helpful (my experience). I've looked at many different family data base programs. FTM has the most versatile format and the best features of any I've tried. The price of the program and the CD's has been worth every penny to me.
I'm seeking information on the parentage, birthplace of George Thomas b 1815/20. He mar in Sarnesfield parish, Herefordshire to Susanna Payne in 1847. Their first child, Emma, was b 1847 in Aston, Warwickshire in 1847. George & Susanna's marriage license indicates their parents as William Thomas, blacksmith and James Payne, Labourer. The Payne/Evans family was in Sarnesfield for several generations. But, even though George was residing in Almeley parish at the time of his marriage, there is no Thomas family there. George emigrated to America and Susanna & Emma followed, arriving in Philadelphia in 1850. The family was then in Newcastle, Lawrence Co., PA in the 1860 census. Other children were: James b 1852; William b 1854; Edwin b 1856; Salina b 1859 and Jenny b 1861. In the late 1860s the family migrated to Cole Co., MO where Emma mar Thomas Ambrose in 1869 and James mar 1st Nancy, then 2nd Nadine and moved to Pettis Co. The rest of the family then appears in Camden Co. where William mar Bessie Smith; Edwin mar Mary Matilda Parrish; Salina mar William Smith and Jenny mar Henry Wheeler(?)
