Hi Potential Cousins! I am searching for information on James Virgil Thomas. He was born on 7 Feb 1837 n McMinn County, Tennessee. He died 13 July 1925 in Ben Franklin, Delta County, Texas. He married Sarah Frances Cassell on 4 May 1865 in Ben Franklin, Delta County, Texas. I do not know anything about him or his family before 1837. I am hoping someone will help! James Virgil and Sarah Frances had the following children: Will H. born in Paris, Lamar Co., Texas; James Taylor born in Paris, Lamar Co., TX; Frances Virgie born in TX.; Emma Laura born in Ben Franklin, Delta Co., TX; Davis Asbury born in Ben Franklin, TX; Carrie Bell born in Ben Franklin, TX and Mary Jane born in Ben Franklin. I descend from Mary Jane Thomas who married Sam Houston Bryant on Jan 2, 1889 in Lamar Co., TX. I sure hope there is someone out there who can help with this family. Eleanor, I wonder if you know if Richard had a brother Michael? My GF, Michael Thomas, came to Iowa from Deuseldorf Germany with his wife Katherine Krupp and 4 sons around 1880. Don't know anything about his siblings or parents; but haven't found too many others Thomas' from Germany. Any connections you can see? Perhaps I might be able to suggest a better alternative to this action which would have only a limited exposure to the THOMAS Family Mail List and then become part of the THOMAS Family Mail List Archives! That alternative would be utilization of the GenConnect THOMAS Family Surname Boards also served by Rootsweb. Indexing for posts made to the GenConnect Surname Boards is made available through Surname Helper! http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Thomas http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/ThomasBibl http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/ThomasBios http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/ThomasDeed http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/ThomasObits http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/ThomasPens http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/ThomasWill While I do not personally object to a well-thought out query that lists the information you have cited above, I do have qualified reservation for merely listing a series of surnames that are nothing more than a list of surnames. Should everyone put themselves in the position of someone searching for a particular surname within the THOMAS Family Mail List Archives, and imagine the time that might be involved in retrieving archived posts in search of a series of surnames within previous THOMAS Family Mail List posts going back to June of 1996, and possibly retrieving no further information for your all your effort than just finding a citation of the surnames for which you are searching. I am inclined to believe that we might all further the cause of genealogical research if we were to resolve to make all our posts as informative as possible when posting to the THOMAS Family Mail List. I for one would very much like to see a post exemplifying a suggested listing format for this effort should you wish all 600 subscribers to the THOMAS Family Mail List to take part. I also do hope that all will exercise good judgement in realizing that should everyone begin doing this, and posting same within a very short time, quite a goodly number of our subscribers might choose to unsubscribe rather than be deluged with an onslaught of posts to the THOMAS Family Mail List, especially so should no more meaningful information be included in most other than just a listing of surnames! We should also recognize that when replying to any such posts that are made to reply to the originator of the post, rather than replying to the THOMAS Family Mail List and re quoting the entire original message each time in replying to the list. This is relevant to both THOMAS Family Mail List subscribers and THOMAS Family Mail Digest subscribers when replying to any specific message. Thank you for your attention, your patience, and cooperation in this matter. And thank you for your participation in the THOMAS Family Mail List! TTYL Craig List Adm for THOMAS-L and THOMAS-D

Okay, okay! I'll put specific locations. I did put states, if you'll notice, but I was trying to keep it simple. THOMAS - ?? to Putnam Co., Georgia to Tallapoosa Co., Alabama to Leake Co., Mississippi, then my Grandmoth went to Clarksdale, Coahoma Co., MS with my parents. 1820 (my great grandfather, John L. Thomas' birth in Georgia (probably Lincoln Co.) to 1944 (my grandmother's death) MOREMAN - ? England to ???Maryland to Wilkes Co., Georgia MORMAN Thomas Moreman was a Rev. War soldier He married Rachel Simmons. 1746 (Thomas Moreman's birth in England) to their youngest daughter, Belinda Frances Moreman, born in 1822 in Georgia who married John L. Thomas SIMMONS Don't know much about Rachel Simmons at all. She also moved to Tallapoosa Co., AL with John and Belinda Thomas - died in about 186--- GILBERT My grandmother Susan(nah) Thomas married John Fleming Gilbert. They were in Tallapoosa Co., AL, then Clay Co., and then went to Leake Co., MS. He died in 1900 at the age of 52. Hope this suffices and satisifies everyone. Sue Howard

Well, I guess I have to apologize. Those were not all Thomas connecting lines that I sent. I wasn't thinking when I sent it. That was the list I sent to the Southern Trails discussion group that I subscribe to and I just copied it. My Thomas lines would be Thomas, Moreman or Morman, Simmons, and a connecting line to Thomas through marriage would be Gilbert (my grandmother Susan(nah) Americus Melvina Thomas married a John Fleming Gilbert. She had an older sister named Savannah Thomas and a brother older named John Thomas. Then younger, were two sisters, Alsenia and Josephine, and another brother, Josephus Thomas. One of her sisters married a Wilson. But actually, when you come right down to it, I don't see any harm in putting the other lines that we are searching, as long as we don't post a whole gedcom. I thought I did it fairly simply. You never know when you're going to make a connection with someone, even if it's not on the line for the list you're on, and then it would be well worth it! Sue Howard

I have to agree with Don on this one. As one who is looking (mostly in vain) to locate the Thomas clan from Germany that may or may not have traveled through Schoharie, NY on their way to Berks Co., PA, where I picked up their trail, I can say that to know that your Thomas line is Welsh, or is in South Carolina, or someplace else, is very important. Hope we don't get our feathers in a ruffle over this one! Mark Thomas, who will be posting a line in the next couple of hours.

Hi, This is as far back as I have. I would appreciate sharing information with anyone to fill in some of the blanks along the way or possibly find out more about Joseph's ancestors or descendants. Joseph m Christian MEDDERS 07/02/1868 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Iowa that the song is written about. Joseph was born in England. The story goes that he sailed from Liverpool when he was 7 years old with his mother, brother Robert, sister Jane and step-father PEAS. Some believe the family originated in Wales. Joseph ran away and joined the army underage. He was a drummer boy, captured and held in the deep south. He escaped, made his way North, rejoined the Northern Army and was a guard at Abraham Lincoln's funeral in Springfield, IL. Joseph received a medal which is in the Clear Lake Museum in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. Joseph and Christine (Christian) MEADOWS (MEDDERS) had ten children, seven boys and three girls. In 1870 the family was in Chickasaw county, Iowa. In 1880 the family was in York county, Nebraska. In 1885-1900 they were in LeSeur county, Minnesota. They moved to New Haven twp, Dunn county, Wisconsin in 1901. Joseph had a farm with 20 acres from 1901-1916. My husband's lines go this way down from Joseph. I have most of the siblings names and some dates along the way if anyone would like to share and compare. Joseph m Christian MEDDERS m1868 Fred A m Mary Ellen TRYONS m1894 Hiram (Hazle) m Mary SWANEPOEL (need info on her) m1931 Alvin m Nancy WEBSTER m1954 Mark m Sharon HICKEY (that is me!) m1983 Thanks again for any additional information or ideas on where to find some.
