I have an Elizabeth HOFF who was the mother of two TRYON daughters that married two sons of Joseph Martin THOMAS. The marriage of one of the daughters was 1894. I believe the family were either in Indiana or Wisconsin during this time period. Sorry I don't have anything closer. Hi, My father-in-law's father's name was Hiram Aaron (Hazle) THOMAS. The farthest back I have them is to Joseph Martin THOMAS who came with his mother and at least a brother Robert and a sister Jane with their step-father PEAS to America from Liverpool. The ship was the 'Seddon', I believe, but haven't found where I could confirm it. The story is that the family originated in Wales. I am searching for the parents of James S. Thomas born October, 1832 in North Carolina. I locate him first in 1862 enlisting in the Confederate Army and he states his residence is Lumpkin County, Georgia, although he is enlisting in Union County, Georgia. I believe him to have a brother, Henry, who joined at the same time. He married my great grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Maldin/Malden in Hamilton County, Tennessee, in January, 1865. He next appears in White County, Georgia, in 1870. I believe he has relatives there. He moves to Collinsville, DeKalb County, Alabama in the 1870s and appears on the 1880 census. My THOMAS line begins with Joseph William THOMAS (abt. 1800-1855) in Ireland to SC where he married Nancy Rebecca DUBOIS (abt.1803-1845). Their children were: Martin, Rebecca, Nancy and Joseph William THOMAS, Jr. (1845-1917) Jr. married Cynthia CREWS in 1865 and they had twelve children (including my g.grandmother, Annie Rebecca THOMAS - MOLE). Joseph Jr. served in the 3rd SC Cavalry, Co. D, during the Civil War (enlisted 1862- 1865). By the 1870 Federal Census they (Joseph and Cynthia) were living in Beaufort, SC, next to Cynthia's parents, the Crewses. Joseph is buried in the Johns-Richardson Cemetery in Colleton County, SC, and Cynthia in Cummings, SC, in the Crews Cemetery. Hoping to hear from some descendents of this family! Hi All, My Thomas line is in Virginia, Amherst County. Looking for ancestors of W. E. Thomas who married Ellen _________. W. E. estimated to have been born in early- to mid-1850's. I have his descendents as Lewis Nelson Thomas who married Cora Lee Chenault. Their son is Alfred Thomas who married Lola Clark Hackworth. During this trip west which probably occurred in 1851, her oldest son Isaac died of lung disease. Lydia was listed as one of the settlers on lands approved for preemption of vacant lands within limits of the Mississippi and Pacific Railroad. She apparently had been living there for a while. Her brother, John B. Thomas was one of the chain carriers for the railroad survey. This suggests that Lydia and her brother came to Texas together. The 1870 Parker County tax list has her son Andrew Jackson Gore as the owner of this land; however, in 1889 this same land was listed in Lydia's name. Neither she nor her two children were listed in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Parker and/or Wise counties. These two counties were heavily involved in the Indian wars during this period and the census takers did not make the necessary effort to count all of the citizens. Lydia was listed on the 1875 Parker County tax list. 1850 census Bledsoe County, TN, Lydia was listed in the household of her younger brother, John B. Thomas. Does anybody have ideas about this? 1) Joseph Thomas, b 1766 in Loudoun Co, VA d aft 1832; son of Robert Thomas & Frances Remey both from VA No information provided on his wife. 2) Joseph Thomas, born in Appomattox area VA, son of Charles Thomas (born abt 1839) & Judith Patterson Ripley. I started with names and dates and areas, but figured I might as well try and give a little more info so people could tell if they had any connections at all. My Thomas Family I think was of German or Swiss descent, and were somewhere in PA. Still have not narrowed down the area for sure yet. Indications are Northumberland/Lancaster area, maybe Berks?? Dates are still hazy for the time period except when I get to my Jacob Thomas, Jr.! They traveled down to Pa, and I found them in Knox and Blount Co., TN.
