    1. James R & Emma W THOMAS 1870 Iowa
    2. Sharon Thomas
    3. Hi List, I have just come across another unrelated THOMAS line that I am hoping someone can help me with. On the 1870 Census Cass twp, Jones county, Iowa it lists James R Thomas as 24 years working as a Farmer and born in Indiana. His wife is Emma W at 23 years working keeping house and was born in Connecticut. They have living with them a 15 year old female named Harriet Palmer and an 84 year old A. VanAmburgh. Also my Joseph Thomas born about 1844 is split over whether Joseph was born in York, England or New York. His military records show that he was born in New York, but there is no record of the birth. Joseph told his grand-daughter (who is still alive) that he was born in York, England. If he was born in England that would mean his father never left England, just his mother with step-father PEASE and two siblings. If Joseph was born in New York then his father died in New York and his mother married PEASE after arriving in New York. Depending on where Joseph was born also changes the year that they would have sailed from Liverpool to New York. Any help or ideas as where to search next to verify or disprove would be appreciated. Sharon

    1. THOMAS, Issac Samuel
    2. MandLDixon
    3. THOMAS, Issac Samuel. Christened 16 October 1859/60? North Dalton, England. Son of William Thomas and Jane Woodhill. Emigrated to New Zealand arriving 5 September 1863 on "The Captain Cook" at Lyttleton. Married Annie Shaskey - one of two sisters. The other sister married Issac's brother William. Annie died and was buried in Pongaroa after having two children: Samuel Thomas and Totsey Thomas. Isaac's oldest son Samuel went to war with his good friend George Stewart. They were both killed and Isaac ended up marrying George's widow May Wilcox. May was 35 years younger than Isaac and already had three children of her own from her marriage to George: Ruby Stewart, Doris Stewart and Don Stewart. However, they were also able to start a sizable family of 5 children of their own. Issac and May spent 21 years together and May lived 32 years after his death. Issac died 27 May 1940 at Pongaroa in New Zealand. I am told that he had a moustache to cover a big top lip. Seeking further information or contact with relatives. 3. THOMAS, Joseph William. Born 29 September 1879, Wainui, (Southern Shore of Akaroa) New Zealand. Son of John Woodill Thomas and Elizabeth Ann Bates. Had a stepfather John Hewett. Occupation Farmer, Soldier. Was six feet tall. Interests Boats and the Sea. Died 1955. Buried at Weymouth, New Zealand. Married Helena Caroline Keegan 27 September 1903 at Dannievirke, New Zealand. Children: Jack Heaton Thomas. Photographs, certificates and papers on file. Joseph grew up in Akaroa, always mischievious as a child, adventurous as a teenager but never got into trouble with the law. He fought in the Boer War gaining the position of 2nd Leitenant. He was too young and altered his age to go to war. He began courting Helena on his return to Akaroa and they later married moving to Hawkes Bay district. In 1915 Joe enlisted for World War I. Again he was not elligable by age. This time he was too old. The people in his town gave he and his half brother Gordon a farewell party and they each received Binoculars. They fought in the trenches together and there are many stories about Joe and Gordon. When Joe's wife died he was not able to cope. His son Jack took over the farm and Joe moved to Weymouth, South Auckland becoming a recluse either in his boat or his one room batch. Seeking further information or contact with relatives. 2. I have combined the Thomas information from the Book "Wilson County, North Carolina Cemeteries, Volume III" and the book "Old Albemarle & it's Absentee Landlords". The information below is a mixture of fact and SPECULATION--especially the birthdates--which are marked circa. If you have birthdates for any of these folks, please send them to me & I will compile the info & resend the corrected information to Thomas-L Mailing List. One thing that looks strange - John Thomas b. 1735 d. 1775 must have had a lot of twins - because there's no way that 22 children could have been born between 1755 and 1775. 1. Thomas Family
    2. Thanks very much for your response on the Thomas Family. I see several Theophilus Thomas's mentioned in the book "Old Albemarle & it's Absentee Landlords" by Worth S. Ray. In fact, one of Tillie Thomas's brother's was a Theophilus Thomas. The Thomas family is listed in this book also has connections to Cottens & Godwins. John Thomas married a daughter of Major Barnaby Kearney, who was burgess 1684 from Nansemond County, but this, however, is not established as a fact. There are one or two items that indicate it. He appears to have had only three sons, John Thomas, Richard Thomas and Robert Thomas. John Thomas was Capt John Thomas, son in law of John COTTEN and his wife Martha GODWIN. Elizabeth GODWIN married Capt. Barnaby Kearney, sister of Elizabeth Kearny, whom we think was the mother of Capt. John Thomas. Micajah Thomas, Jr. grandson of Richard Thomas, brother of Capt. John Thomas married Elizabeth Crafford, a grand-daughter of Capt Barnaby Kearney. I hope this will help you & everyone at Thomas-L Mailing List. This writer has many abstracts from the Isle of Wight records, but space will not permit their use in this sketch. In 1690 Henry West and John Portis - father in law of John Thomas - patented 900 acres of land in Isle of Wight, and the same year William West, WILL GODWIN (father in law of John COTTEN) and Walter and Jeremiah________ are all mentioned together. It occurred to the compiler that the wife of Henry Lawrence may have been an Isabella Purcell, sister of Arthur Purcell, and also sister of Susannah Pursell who married William Exum. >>>>In 1710 Arthur Whitehead married MARY GODWIN, a sister of MARTHA GODWIN who married John COTTEN, and after her death, he appears to have married second Isabella Purcell, whose sister Patience became the wife of the third William Exum. Richard Exum and THOMAS GODWIN, in 1650 patented 550 acres of land in what is now (it is said) Essex County, Virginia using the headrights of eleven persons, among them being Morgan Thomas, Richard Exum and William COTTEN. WILLIAM GODWIN, of the Lower Parrish, acknowledges receipt of legacies left to Elizabeth Wright by the will of her father, Thomas Wright, September 6, 1666. Witnesses, John Marshall and Barnett Cruddup. The WILLIAM GODWIN of the above note was the father of Martha Godwin, who married John Cotten, who died in Bertie County, NC in 1728.

I am still searching for information on Tillie Thomas Godwin. I have located information on the Thomas family, who I believe to be her relatives, but I still have not found specific information on Tillie or her husband. Since William Godwin lived in that area, I am wondering if she could have married one of his sons.
