    1. World Book

    3. I was one of those "fools" who bought a "World Book". The name Bath for the town of origin is a dead giveaway, for that is what you will take when you purchase this list of every: fill in the blank, family name in the country. I do however feel that a "Cease and Decease" order is a little strong. Does this mean they stop and then die or does it mean that the stop as a result of dying? In other words.."Stop and Drop Dead!" I like it! Do they have "Cease and Decease" Orders in South Carolina? If so there are a lot of mass mailers, telemarketers that I would like to take to court. 8>) Don Thomas Simmons

    3. A Cease and Desist order is only issued to cover one filed complaint that is found to be a legitimate complaint. In the case of the bk company in Bath, OH they were found to use deceptive advertising through their mail brochures. The US Postal Service issued them a Cease and Desist order. The bk company then changed their advertising to bring it in compliance with the law. In my opinion I still feel that they border on being deceptive in their offer. That bk company has been in business many yrs and their story matches those in Tom Brokaw's Fleecing of America series on the evening NBC news. So many people have been lured to buy there surname bk offering with the hope that it will further their genealogy research only to find that it is basically just a typewritten list of all the people in the USA with that surname that they could find in telephone bks, etc. I have been researching my ancestry for some 30+ yrs and during that time the Bath OH bk company has offered me many times me a bk on my RARE surname. I purchased one at a used bk store for $5 just to have to show people in my genealogy group what they would get for their money. Good luck, Bettye

    2. A special thank you to the over 30 people that responded to my inquiry about this book. All of you had the same response - DO NOT DO IT, it's a glorified phone book and less. I appreciate very much you prompt and honest replies. I'm on my way to the Post Office with the information to see if they're interested. Maybe others that read this list will be saved the pain. Thanks again GuyT

    3. The firm that publishes these surname bks keeps changing their name so as to confuse researchers. They are located in Bath, OH and have gone by names such as Beatrice Bayley and Halbert's. The Federation of Genealogists has filed complaints with the US Postal Service abt the deception that this company uses to lure buyers. The US Postal Service has issued Cease and Decease orders against the company. However, that did not stop them, they merely changed their method so as not to be in conflict with the law. The data in most of these bks is a list of names gathered from telephone bks, etc. Bettye

    3. Guy, This company has been in business for years and has been taking people's money for years. The book is a glorified phone book with some trash about the Thomas lineage most of which is inaccurate. I guess since all those lawsuits against them they've had to add the disclaimer to their advertisement. The old hook used to be to mention that YOUR name is in the book which being a phone book it was there, but the information was worthless genealogically! My best recommendation DON'T DO IT!! 2. I received information in the mail about the New World Book of Thomases. This book is being produced by Heirloom Book, Bath, Ohio. The lady that producing the book is Bernice S. Thomas, 3687 Ira Road, Bath, Ohio 44210. The disclaimer is made that "No direct genealogical connection to your family or to your ancestry is implied or intended." Add says that the book contains 41,521 rare Thomas vital records of Thomases that lived in America between the 17th and 20th centuries. Book does have a money back guarantee, it says. Cost if you order right away is $39.95, but regular will be $59.95. If anyone has had an experience with one of these books I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you. Please reply to Email address. 2. Was curious to know whether anyone has a Nancy THOMAS (Nancy Ann)(Mamie) THOMAS; born circa 1820 (GA/NC?); died (January 09, 1904/January 08, 1893)?? Burried in Post Oad Cemetery, Petteway Community, Robertson County, TX. Nancy is said to have been part Indian (Cherokee??); sisters (Possible: "Doll" Geneva?); Nancy married Joshua STANFORD; was aprox. 16 years old when she married; believed to be either the second/third wife of Joshua. I have extensive information regarding the (STANFORD) side of this line, however, I do not go any further back on the THOMAS side; the above is the only information I have on my Nancy THOMAS. Names of children (Nancy and Joshua) are as follows: William M., James Wesley, Robert Lee, Noah Joshua, Winnie and Martha. All STANFORDS. Was just hoping that perhaps some of these children might have been namesakes of someone in the THOMAS clan. Thanks in advance for any help/info. Sincerely, D.

    3. I descend from Daniel Thomas and it is confusing. Louise Heiselmen, and Hazlewood and Carson have books on Tristram Thomas. Last time I heard from Louise she had found something else but I don't know what it was. My web pages go back to Daniel Claibourne Thomas because I have photographs of Claib and Jane Gaither. Sarah Covington also descends from the Normans. Once you get back to Simon there was a great deal of confusion because direct lines were assumed but because of the way the probate was handled they couldn't have been. Kent "David D. & Sherry M. John Pledger Thomas, born 1 Sep 1882, Malboro, South Carolina; father Nathan Thomas; mother Nancy Bingham. John married Sarah Thomas, born 1794, Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina; father Daniel Thomas; mother Sarah Covington. 1. Still looking for book, this time with correct title!
    2. hilnders
    3. Hello list members, A few weeks ago I posted a query that I titled "looking for book" I asked if anyone had or had seen a book called "Pioneers of The Ozarks" I got a lot of tips from list members and several found a book by that title. I appreciated the help so much and marveled at the willingness of so many to help and share. That is what is so wonderful about genealogy research. I find genealogists to be a family community. It is great. Unfortunately it turned out to be the wrong book. I actually had the wrong title. I just found out that it is called "Life Sketches and Biographies of the Ozarks" (author unknown). I think someone sent me an e-mail about that very book and told me about a William H. MAY that they found in the book. I may be remembering wrong, however. I just recently found out that the son of one of the men I am seeking (John MAY) is named William H. MAY. I am still looking for the story of John MAY and Mary Ford and his brother? Reynolds MAY and his wife Hannah ENGLISH. Does anyone have this book: "Life Sketches and Biographies of the Ozarks" Has anyone seen it in a library. I would like to know the name of the author and possibly where I could purchase it or at least read it. If the person who may have sent the email about that book in the first place could send it again, I sure would appreciate it. I am looking for info about the surnames MAY, ENGLISH, FORD, BOUCHER, BRUTON, KEITH, and possibly others associated with these people. Thanks again. See my original query below. 1. Samuel A. Ruffin/Samuel H. Ruffin ETC...
    2. Hi Peggy and all my distant cousins. Ok...relatives...here we go...lets figure this mess out...There were only so many folks living in the county back then...so we need to draw a map and narrow down the surnames in the surrounding area to find the missing grandmas. Were they Indians? Tuscaroras from Pasquotank co. around Tarboro. Were they Cherokees? What we do know from other sites. We can trace this back to year 700 or so in Norway and Grandfather in Scotland King Robert the Bruce and his queen....then down to 1500's... Lord William Ruthven ~ Nobleman of Perthshire Scotland was a militant Protestant Presbyterian and he kidnapped King James... and was beheaded for treason by Bloody Queen Mary---Mary Queen of Scots. his son Isle of Wight VA, William Ruthven now called Ruffin 1>. I have archive papers stating ...definitely middle initial H. Co. G, 3 North Carolina Art'y (40 State Troops) Confederate. and the register and muster rolls also have middle initial H. I have a feeling that the war dept has these 2 men mixed up or either they died same troop / same day. It could happen??? I do not have any papers for widow's pension for Charity Ann Boon Ruffin Daughtridge. His only wife~my Great, Great Grandmother."Muh" I do have copies of widows pension for the Samuel A & Martha Ann Jordan. Samuel A & Samuel H must have been 1st or 2nd cousins. haven't really determined this yet. I do have photos of Muh and Pap and everyone following. I also have some metal photos of 2 couples...not sure who they are. But my relatives look very much like one of the women. It could be Charity Ann Boons Parents Joshua L. Boon & Easter Gay. It could be Samuel Henry's Parents Samuel Ruffin & "Betsy" Forehand. It could be Martha Ann Susan Ruffin & Elisha Thomas It could be Elisha Thomas' parents Wilson Thomas & Nancy Proctor What year did they make metal pics?? That would be a clue. I don't think it is Samuel Henry & Charity. She doesn't look like Charity...but people change. Charity was short and so is this lady in the pic. But...we don't think it is the same person. Charity Ann Boon Ruffin remarried 2nd husband Joseph Daughtridge nicname"Pap" and had 10 more children. When Samuel H. died their only child was about 18 months old...Frances Ann Cornelia Ruffin, my great grandmother. My Great Grandmother...Frances Ann Cornelia Ruffin b6-15-1864 Nash d6-8-1946 .she married her 1st cousin. James Robert Thomas. Her husbands mother is her aunt (the sister of her daddy). Her mother -in-law is her aunt Martha Ann Susan Ruffin who was married to Elisha Thomas. Martha Ann Susan & Samuel Ruffin are brother & sister. ______________________________________________________This Martha Ann Susan...is not same person as Martha Ann Jordan....let's not get them confused...heaven forbid. My Samuel Henry Ruffin was only married once to Charity Boon Your family Bible has Samuel A. in hospital Richmond May 15, 1862 pneumonia...I guess he could have died on the 27th. Look back at the letter...You say Samuel "H". and Martha were 1st cousins... I think you mean Samuel "A" and Martha Ann Jordan were cousins through the Bailey sisters. ______________________________________________________ My Samuel H. born CA 1830-1831 married Charity 5/30/1858 died according to copies of Civil War Records in my Possession on May 27, 1862 Richmond, VA. His parents are Samuel Ruffin and Elizabeth "Betsy" Forehand . Her father is David Forehand b. 1754 according to what his parents told him. per court papers for Revolutionary War Pension. ? who her mother is...Been told her mother worked on the Forehand Farm and that she was illegitimate...but there is a marriage of a Letha Holland to David. ______________________________________________________ I am not sure if John Ruffin, SR. born CA 1752 & unknown wife were the parents of my Samuel b ca 1790 d 1840 Nash Co.& grandparents of Samuel H. Bullock---they had a son john #3--according to the Crilley site. Stephen--m. ? Rachel ?--- JOHN, SR.#1---he had a son john, jr.#2---who's John Srs. wife? John Sr had 9 children by unknown wife... 2 daughters one named Rachel and one named Elizabeth* see Eliz. will dated 1851 on Crilley's site. that Eliz. Ruffin is the Sister to my Samuel and the Aunt to Samuel Henry ...it is not the will of Samuel Henry's wife Eliz. "Betsy" Forehand as she died prior to Feb. 12, 1844 according to her Orphaned childrens court paper I have. The girls name Rachel shows up 3 times...I wonder if this is Biblical or significant namesake to an older sister-in-laws name Rachel Peele married to her probably much older brother Robert Or could she have been named after aunt-in-law ?Rachel? married to her dad's older brother Stephen or could it be the mystery name of her mother since she is the 1st daughter of the 2 daughters out of 9...7 boys..2 girls. I want to Prove I'm of the John, Sr. line I want to find out who the wife of John Sr. is. I want to find out what Hannah's last name is the wife of Nathaniel. I want to prove when my Samuel Henry Ruffin really died. I want to find his grave up here in Richmond VA if possible. I want to find out what battle he may have died in or what hospital. I want to find out who Stephen was married to. ?? Rachel?? I want to prove that John Sr. is the dad of Samuel and grandfather of Samuel Henry and where is the documentation from to prove it. On my Surname Gay...I want to find out if I descend from John Rolfe and Pocohontas (Matoaka) Chief Powhatans Daughter- Princess of Virginia from Jamestown. HELP>>>> I can't do this alone. 2. Eve thanks for Tommy's address since the AOL address book & favorites crash on 3/17/99. : ( Unfortunately, I have no idea who some of these people are in these newly discovered (more than 30) pics. They are mostly of My great aunt Alice Thomas, Her sister Mattie Thomas, My Grandmother Charity Bluma Thomas Eveland, their younger brother "Tink" Robert Thomas. Lots of women friends and neighbors, pics of an old...old house. people sitting in fields...people standing on railroad tracks. The pic that says Ms. Boon ...? There is a pic of "Muh" my great, great grandmother. There is a pic of a man..he is real old and very tan. A pic of a mule with someone plowing. Some Italian looking guy. Some very ethnic looking people. My great aunt looks about like a young teen in these photos so they are about early 1900's. "Muh" looks to be about 50+??? "Muh" is Charity Ann Boon. There is a pic with Daughtridge written on the back in my grandmothers handwriting. My mother and I don't know who they are...that's why I need to get a scanner and post this site for all of Nash/Edgecombe to see to identify anyone they may also have a picture of same folks. I would scan and post them with numbers and names. I will write this to Tommy and he can contact me with Frank's snail mail again...since I have lost it. I am more organized now. Thanks, Dale I have decided to post one page a day...from the legacy left to me by my aunt. That way...you can pick through what you need. I am too overwhelmed with the duplicate names in the family. I can't keep that straight when I look at the other family lines. Especially the Ruffins...Virginia Crilley or Lucy Ruffin I have also lost Monk Moores address. And if anyone out there knows Bennett Barnes...he's very into the genealogy but I don't have an address for him. If he is on line... I know he will see this. Bennett contact me. 2. My lost THOMAS gg-gf. was Abraham. My maternal gm Edna Bella THOMAS b/1887 died 1929 in Benwood, W.Va. (near Wheeling). She had a brother Ralph. My mother was 11 years old at the time. She has told me about living with her g-parents Abraham and Lydia HUGHES at Short Creek. Thus my search has taken me to Short Creek, Brooke Co., W.Va. Supposedly he died at Cherry Hill, Short Creek, Brooke co. WV. 2. I have been attempting to research the Thomas Family of Greenbrier County, West Virginia. I have had many helpful people provide me with information, which I have used to create the Descendancy Chart of this Thomas family. It is my hopes that some of you Thomases will be able to help fill in many missing pieces.
