    1. McClellon Thomas
    2. Melanie Gross
    3. Hello fellow Thomas researchers: I am searching for McClellon Thomas born Mar 1872 in Tennessee. His death certificate states that his parents are William Thomas and Lucinda Trent both of NC. He was found in the 1900 Harlan County census with three children. No wife. He married at least four times and had 17 children that were still living at his death in the 1900's. His family is known to still be in Knox, Harlan, and Laurel Counties. But if anyone should have any clues to his parentage, please contact me. Thanks, Melanie Cornett-Gross

    1. New Phone Scam
    2. Hi All! I received this from one of my genealogy friends. Thought I'd pass it on. There's a new phone scam. Carol I received a telephone call yesterday from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician who was conducting a test on our telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should press nine(9), zero(0) the pound sign (#) and then hang up. I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pressing 90# you give the individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with Southwestern Bell, MCI, and GTE. Please beware. DO NOT PRESS 90# FOR ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested I share this information with others. PLEASE pass this on to everyone you know. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information to them, too.

    1. Re: THOMAS and LEMON
    2. Patricia, I'm going to give you some places to look for more information on this. It may only be a coincidence, but the THOMAS families (there were several brothers) that I'm descended from (my father's family) lived in Lewis Co., KY from about 1790s on. The LEMON family (my grandmother's family) lived in Scioto Co., Ohio from about 1820 on. There were THOMASes living in Scioto Co., Ohio, too. I have records on a whole cemetery full of them but I don't know their connection to the Lewis County family of THOMAS. The really interesting part of the above information, the two counties lie opposite each other on the banks of the Ohio River!!!! So, I would VERY strongly suggest you start checking the records in those two counties for information and you might well be able to find if your ancesters came from there. Yet another coincidence, there was an Aurilla SLOCUM living in that very same area of Scioto Co.! Her grandson married Cora Alice LEMON and was my grandfather! So, with a first name of Aurilla in your family, the last names of THOMAS and LEMON..... Anyway, it might be a place for you to start. Try checking out the various census records from 1840, 1830, 1820, etc. Sue Bishop

    3. Hi Ernie: Try this URL entitled "Memorial Foundation of the German Colonies in Virginia"...it's a pretty complete site: http://www.germanna.org/ . There is a map on the main page that will help you locate Germanna on a modern-day map...just look for Route 3 on the map where it crosses the Rapidan River. And then please also try John Blankenbaker's excellent web-site entitled "Germanna History", which has a large number of short notes on the Germanna Colonists: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/johnsgermnotes/germhis1.html . 2. The Stoddards
    3. Hi Melissa, I could hear your frustration in your note you sent to the list. I volunteer at a FHC of the LDS church and a couple things I tell patrons when in the same situation is: 1. check the 1850 US census or the 1851 Canadian census for your THOMAS if that's the time frame for your ancestor. 2. There is a microfilm or microfiche at the FHL in Salt Lake called Border Crossings having to do with Canadians entering into the US and vice versa . I have no idea the time frame, however it comes as a suggestion from an Englishwoman who serves in the library with me. 3. Possibly, a naturalization or better yet the declaration of intent for naturalization record could be seen on film or fiche. Those are often indexed. 4. Maine is a great state for keeping birth and death records. Its on film indexed by surname again at the FHC. I've used it. 5. Its best to go from the known to the unknown with regard to the facts and ancestors. Often death records will give place of birth and names of parents, like the ones in Maine. 6. The family history library is now on the net. It includes their card catalog, ancestral file and IGI. The site address is: http://www.familysearch.org/ Hope this helps Jan

    1. Minor Thomas, NY & Fayette Co. IN
    2. I am correcting an error in my e-mail from yesterday. Minor Thomas bought land in Madison and FAYETTE counties in Indiana in 1823. I am seeking the father of James Thomas, born NY in 1790s, married Harriet Wheeler 1815 (location unknown), lived in Fayette Co. until 1843, lived in Madison County in 1850, buried in Fort Cemetary, Fortville, IN. With James born in NY, and Minor Thomas living nearby in Fayette Co., I am wondering if Minor is the Minor Thomas who founded and was first minister of the Covert Baptist Church, Covert, Seneca Co. NY, 1803. Richard Payton Littleton, CO

    3. This is intended for everyone in the list: I have (for some time now) been attempting to research my family of Thomases, but to no avail. WAH!! Anyway, since there are some new names on the list, I thought I'd repost my specific info and beg anyone with any concuring info to respond to me. Thanks in advance! Here's what I have so far, which came from my paternal grandfather: My family came from Wales (possibly Cardiffshire) and landed in Nova Scotia, Canada. I'm not sure about the dates, but I think my grandfather is either third or fourth generation, so we're talking around mid- 1800's. They then moved south to Maine and eventually settled in Connecticut, which is where I live. None of the people in this group went to Pennsylvania, or settled in any other part of the US as far as I know. So! If anyone can think of anything to do with this, tell me!! 1. Minor Thomas, NY & IN
    2. Does anyone have a connection between the Minor Thomas, founder and first minister of Covert Baptist Church, Covert, Seneca Co. NY, 1803, and the Minor Thomas that bought land in Hancock and Madison Co. Indiana in 1823. By the 1850 Hancock Co. Census, there are several Thomas families indicating NY births. 2. Mary Wright The Thomas list was ahead of Time. The last several List (4/9 - 12) featured this same info except warning with personal experiences. I had over 50 individual warnings outside the list - direct to me from list readers. We thank out list folks for providing this source of information for our Thomas family of cousins. GuyT

    1. Those pesky Family Books
    2. Robert Wright
    3. Hi list members, I just bought the April 19, 1999 edition of Time magazine because the front cover caught me eye. "How to Search for Your Roots" There was an article in there about these "Family History Books" that are apparently making the rounds again. So I thought I would share it with the list. "CAVEAT EMPTOR" "If you are one millions who have received an offer of a personalized family that will help locate ancestral 'namesakes' remember the old warning Buyer Beware'. Various companies have sold such books over the years, but the enduring master is Ohio-based Numa Corporation, parent company of Halbert's. Though their pitch carries a disclaimer 'no direct genealogical connection...implied ore intended-the actual product is a glorified and often inaccurate, phone listing of everyone sharing your surmane, culled from public sources like auto registries and phone books, padded with general information easily found in history textbooks, plus advice freely given by many genealogical societies. Coats of arms, emblazoned on everything from plaques to shot glasses are another huge money maker for Numa. Since heraldry was awarded to only a few families and typically passed on to male descendants, chances are slim you deserve a crest at all. That hasn't stopped Numa from filling customer requests; it's legal and, as a Numa spokeswoman argues, the company has millions of satisfied customers. Quips Victor Wlaszyn, head of the Akron Better Business Bureau, which has been field Numa complaints for decades: "They'd send me one with two kielbases crossed with some sauerkaraut sprinkled over the top.' " That is all of the article. It seems to me to be wrong to take advantage of someone, just because you can. We all know how frustrating genealogy research can be, but we all also know the joy of a real find. So I just thought I would share this will all of you. Pass it on if you choose.
