    2. Date: Mon, 07 Jun 1999 08:19:34 -0400 From: John Blankenbaker <johblank@pipeline.com> To: GERMANNA_COLONIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: (627)Germanna Colonies, History of The six hundred and twenty-seventh note in a series on the Germanna Colonies As we move into the family of Michael Thomas, son of John Thomas and Anna Maria Blankenbaker, we are bordering on fiction. By tradition, Michael is said to the father of twenty-five children by two wives. His will, which emphasizes the second family, was partially burned. So even though I put some names down in black and white, don't believe that they are solid facts. There is some evidence which will be discussed later. The first wife of Michael was Catherine. Many people speculate that she was a Wayland who had a daughter of this name with approximately the correct age. A good circumstantial case can be built that this was the Catherine who married Michael. The only weakness in the argument is that the same facts can also be used to show that Catherine married other men. So I usually refrain from identifying Catherine as a Wayland. The tradition is that Catherine was the mother of fifteen children. A list of suggested children is: Henry (said to be the eldest), Samuel, Margaret, married Everhard Hupp, Anna Maria, m.1 Michael DeBolt, m.2 Michael Crisler, Abraham, m. Susanna Smith, Michael, m. Elizabeth Bennett, John, Jesse, Lucy, Elizabeth, m. Anthony Berry, #11, #12, #13, #14, #15. The second wife of Michael Thomas was Eva Susannah Margaret Hart. The names of ten children of this union have been put forward: George B., m. Lavina Scholl Sarah ?, Israel, m. Catherine Halbert, Daniel, Mary McQueen, Solomon, m. ____ Barnhill Ann, m. Stephen Bowles, Barbara, Elizabeth, perhaps m. Mathias Rafelty, Jr., Rachael, Eve. 3. Recently found that I am related to John Henry Thomas (1855-1923) and his wife Tennessee Harper (1865-1914). They lived in Pensacola, Florida and are buried there but I believe they were from Alabama. I found a John H. Thomas born in 1855 in Coffee County, Al. to Rhodia Harper and William Henry Thomas JR but have not been able to confirm if this is him. Sound familiar to anyone? Thanks, Jenny

    3. I have been trying to find out who the parents and siblings to my g.g.grandfather Oliver Perry Thomas is, or were, this is what I know. Oliver Perry Thomas was born about 1833 in Jackson Co., Va. (now W.Va.). He married Sarah Catherine Boggess in Jackson co. on Jan. 14, 1858. He said on his marriage license that his fathers name was George and on a census (1900) Kanawha Co., Poca District, he said his father was born in Kentucky. My Aunt has been going through some of her old papers and she thinks he had a brother named, Fred and Captain George, and one nicknamed Toad, who drowned when a steamboat sank that Captain George was the captain of, and a sister, who married a Sam Whiting. If anyone can help me, I sure would appreciate you sending me any information. Thanks.

    3. Amelia (A.?) SIMMONS was born c. 1817, possibly in Jefferson County, Indiana (according to the 1860 census). She married Charles THOMAS on 4 February 1836 in Alexandria, Campbell County, Kentucky. I do not know who Amelia's parents are. Charles THOMAS' parents were David THOMAS and Margaret BRENT. Charles and Amelia had the following children: 1. George J. THOMAS, born 15 February 1839 in Johnson Township, Indiana. He married Louisa J. Reeder. 2. William John THOMAS (also referred to as John William THOMAS), born 20 November 1840 in Clinton County, IN. He married Lydia Ann Reeder (a sister to Louisa). 3. Twin: Margarett THOMAS, born c. 1841. Possibly married: ? Kemp. 4. Twin: Maria, born c. 1841. 5. Andrew, born c. 1845 in Clinton County, IN. 6. Albert, born c. 1847 in Clinton County, IN. Amelia and Charles prossibly got divorced sometime before June of 1849. Amelia remarried at that point and I found a Charles THOMAS purchasing property in Clinton County, IN in 1856 from Ephraim THOMAS (Who was a brother to Charles). Charles claimed to be "of Campbell County, Kentucky." Amelia married Richard HUMPHREY on 23 June 1849 in Clinton County, IN. He had been married previously and had a son. Amelia and Richard had 4 children: 1. Sarah HUMPHREY, born July or August 1850 in Clinton County, IN. 2. Danforth HUMPHREY, born 1852 in Clinton County, IN. 3. Henry HUMPHREY, born September or October 1857 in Wisconsin. 4. Sighamus HUMPHREY, born 1858 in Jackson Township, Cass County, Indiana. Amelia and Richard HUMPHREY moved to Cass County, IN. sometime between 1852 and 1858. They were probably visiting relatives in Wisconsin at the time of Henry's birth. Amelia and Richard HUMPHREY were enumerated on the 1860 census in Cass County, IN., but couldn't be found on the 1870 census. What became of them??? What happened to Charles THOMAS??? Any help would be most appreciated. Cindy _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

    3. Albert G. THOMAS was my great-grandfather. He was born in Texas on 7 July 1864. His parents may have been Henry and Mary THOMAS. Albert's daughter Myrtle remembered her grandparents being called Henry and Mary. Myrtle also remembered that Albert's siblings were Hattie, Lee (who m Elva and had 2 sons, Ray and Sam), Mary and John. Some of them moved to AR., OK. and MO. He married my great-grandmother, Mattie Irene "Rainey" HUMPHERY. Rev. John Phillips married them on 1 January 1884 in Joplin, Jasper Co., MO. They migrated to Arkansas and finely to Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Albert ran a large farm in Peggs TWP, Cherokee Co., OK. Mattie Irene HUMPHERY may have been the daughter of Peter and Dawn/Daun/Donna (?) HUMPHREY. She was b on 29 June 1867 in MO., possibly in Kansas City. Mattie or "Rainey" as she was called died in Yonkers, Wagoner Co., OK in December of 1920. Albert died on 5 August 1923 in Yonkers, Wagoner Co., OK. (I only have the memory of an great aunt who could barely remember names and details to go on here.) Death certificate indicates birthplace of Albert THOMAS as Missouri. 1910 Oklahoma census states birthplace is Texas. Albert's middle name may have been spelled Gallatin or Gallitan. His middle initial on 1920 census, Cherokee Co., Oklahoma, is written "C". Albert's Will lists a second wife, Pearl and another son named Albert G. THOMAS Jr. Isabell (THOMAS) ESTEP, Albert's grand-daughter, says that Albert Jr. was not Albert Sr. blood son. Pearl was a pregnant widow or unwed mother when she married Albert Sr. She believes the father to be a William ???? who possibly resided in the same area in OK. Myrtle Thomas Dobson said that she remembered her father Albert, saying he stayed with a family named McEntire in Texas as a young man. I am also searching for information on the Thomas families found below. I have not yet been able to find Albert as a child or his parents or siblings. It has been said that he was born and raised in TX. Children of Albert Gallatin THOMAS and Mattie Irene "Rainey" HUMPHREY: (9 known children born between 1886-1910) 1. It was a big step forward when Margaret James Squires found the origins of the family in Germany (as reported in "BEYOND GERMANNA"). Anna Maria Blanckenbhler married Johann Thomas (or Thomae) in Neuenbrg on 18 Nov 1711. At the time she was twenty-four since she was born to Johann Thomas Blanckenbhler and Anna Barbara Schn on 5 May 1687. The first child born to Anna Maria and Johann Thomas was Hans Wendel Thomas on 17 Apr 1712. A second child, Ursula, born 8 May 1714, died the same day. The third child, Anna Magdalena, was born 24 Nov 1715. No other children are known from Germany. From the will of Michael Kaifer, we know that Anna Maria had two other Thomas children, Michael and Margaret. Both of these are believed to be Virginia born, especially Michael for whom there is no naturalization record in Virginia. We know also from the will of Michael Kaifer that Anna Maria, who married Michael after John Thomas died, had at least five children by Michael. Thus Anna Maria delivered at least ten children and the first one was when she was 24 years old. Therefore one postulates that she had her children at about two year intervals and there could hardly have been any breaks in this rhythm. Therefore, Michael and Margaret were born about 1717 and 1719 but the sequence is uncertain. Or stated in another way, we could say that Michael and Margaret were born ca 1718 and probably we would not be in error by more than one year for each of them. We usually say that the Thomas family came to Virginia in 1717 but we have no proof of this. It seems logical that they would have come with Anna Maria's mother, stepfather, three brothers, and her half-siblings, all of whom are documented as coming in 1717. John Thomas, the father, must have died in Virginia about 1720. Anna Maria was probably married to Michael Kaifer by 1721 when she was 34 years old for she was the mother of at least five children after that date. John Thomas (the son, Johann Wendel) and Michael Thomas had a land patent in their own name in 1726. At this time, John was 14 years old and Michael was about 8 years old. The patent says nothing about the boys being minors. Probably their relatives assisted them in locating and claiming this land which was next to their uncles. It was not adjacent to Michael Kaifer to whom their mother was certainly married by this time. It is possible that the boys, John and Michael, were in the homes of their uncles or their grandmother and not in their stepfather's home. However, the will of Michael Kaifer in no way suggests that the boys were estranged. Contrary to the usual case, more is known about the families of Anna Magdalena and Margaret than about the families of John and Michael. Anna Magdalena married Michael Smith and Margaret married Henry Aylor (thanks to the research of Nancy Dodge and others). Since Michael Smith and Henry Aylor are the ancestors of all within their families, this means that the Michael Smiths and Aylor descendants have a Thomas ancestor (and a Blankenbaker ancestor). The families of John (Jr.) and Michael Thomas are much less certain. 3. The six hundred and twenty-sixth note in a series on the Germanna Colonies John Thomas, the son who came as a small boy in 1717, sold land to John Railsback who had married Elizabeth, gave land for love and affections to Jacob Holtzclaw who had married Susanna Thomas, gave land for love and affections to Joseph Holtzclaw who had married Mary Thomas, and gave land for love and affection to Jacob Blankenbaker who had married Barbara Thomas. John Railsback had twice as much land as the other men but he paid something also. >From this set of circumstances, it appears that John Thomas had five parcels of land, all approximately of the same size and was preparing to give these five tracts to his children. In the midst of doing this, one of the tracts became surplus. This extra, or fifth tract, was sold to John Railsback. There is some reason to believe that this fifth tract was to go to a son, Michael, who instead of remaining in Virginia, moved to North Carolina. For the present, let us make Michael the fifth child of John Thomas but with a big question mark. By land deeds, the first wife of John Thomas is said to be Mary ____. If she were the mother of the children, then their children are believed to be: Elizabeth, m. John Railsback, Susanna, m. Jacob Holtzclaw, Mary, m. Joseph Holtzclaw, Barbara, m. Jacob Blankenbaker, Michael, unproven son but some circumstantial evidence supports the idea. There are several items to be noted which may be significant but as of now are unknowns. The two Holtzclaw men were the youngest sons of the 1714 immigrant, Jacob Holtzclaw. John Railsback came from the Siegen area. Since Mary, the wife of John Thomas, is from an unknown family, this might be the reason that there is a strong connection to the Siegen people. There is also another fact to be observed. The eldest son of the 1714 Jacob Holtzclaw, who was John Holtzclaw, married Catherine Russell who was the widow of an unknown Thomas. So the eldest son of Jacob Holtzclaw married a Thomas widow and the two youngest sons of Jacob married Thomas women. Considering that Susanna and Mary Thomas lived in one county and the men, Jacob and Joseph Holtzclaw, lived in another county, one must ask the question, "How did they get together?" In my own ruminations on this question, I have always been impressed by the fact that John Holtzclaw married a Thomas widow. For this reason I conclude, the Holtzclaw and Thomas families were acquainted. When the sons Jacob and Joseph Holtzclaw were looking for wives, they were acquainted with the family of John Thomas even though they lived many miles apart. But if John Holtzclaw married a Thomas widow, who was the Thomas man? [No note tomorrow. The first Saturday of each month is my usual time to lead tours at the Hans Herr House. 3. Thanks to the help of a lister, I have obtained an image of an ancestor, Thomas THOMAS, a private in Co. H, 76th Rgmt. Ohio Vol. Inf., who perished in the explosion of the steamship Sultana: http://home.att.net/~rpdonnell/images/tthomas.jpg I realize no one else will be as interested in this photo as I am, but because my great-grandfather Charles THOMAS was quite young when his father died and was separated from his family soon thereafter, the information I have been able to gather on Thomas THOMAS has been quite sketchy so far. This photo represents quite a breakthrough, and I wanted to share it! On the hope that a cousin may recognize a connection, I will list the children of Thomas THOMAS according to his widow's pension application: William E. THOMAS b. Apr. 1854 Mary E. THOMAS b. Apr. 1856 Ann THOMAS b. July 1858 Sarah THOMAS b. May 1860 Isaac THOMAS b. Dec. 1861 Charles THOMAS b. Nov. 1863 Ronald Thomas Donnell Cave Creek, Arizona mailto:rpdonnell@att.net
