    3. Help please! I have been trying to locate my GGGrandfather George Washington Thomas, born March 20, 1832 in Pa. According to old family oral history he was from Hughesville, Lycoming Co, PA and I seem to remember great aunts visiting relatives in that area. His death certificate is so smuged its hard to read and obits don't give any info. Believe his father to be Samuel Thomas and from census records of GW, Samuel was born in MA. DC also suggests that Elizabeth Wo??? is mother, born in PA. Figure Samuel would have been born between 1800-1810. Does anyone know anything about this family?? Need all the help I can get. Thanks Joan

    1. Re: Philemon THOMAS
    2. I recently saw a book at Frankfort Historical Society about this person who owned land and settled in Lewis Co, Ky for a while. I was under the impression that Philemon was of the Germanna THOMAS family but the book seemed to indicated differently. The reason I am asking, the book linked together Philemon and the PLUMMER and THURSTON families back in Va. I am descended from Plummer THOMAS and all info I have been given says Plummer was of Michael THOMAS's family. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Sue Bishop

    2. Dear Thomas listers, Please, may I suggest that when you visit and record the occupants of a cemetery that you submit that information to the Tombstone Inscription Project at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/ They are trying to collect all of this wonderful information so that you can go to one site and search. I have been fortunate to have one of my counties included and so many cemeteries have been included. Cleared a great many questions and I also found my cousins grandparents and her uncle, we had no idea... Please consider this, it only takes a few minutes. The 'keeper of the list' is very personable and helpful, you'll enjoy making her acquaintance. Betty in Idaho

    3. Our Thomas family was always said to be of Irish descent. But like you, all arrows point to Wales. I have a Joseph Thomas b . Apr. 15, 1818 in N.C., Rutherford. His parents are from S.C. but their names are unknown. It has been very frustrating tracking his parents, siblings, and cousins. Lucinda Thomas Schaefer

    3. Hi Mary, Just want you to know that my Great Grandfather Robert DAWSON also caught the Measles right after he joined the army and was treated in army hospitals in three different states plus on the Steamer Baltic. I guess he was well enough to fight when he had too as his unit just kept going and he went too. After the war he rec'd a pension because he was never well again, and I have his Civil War papers where another exsoldier testified about him never being well, so his pension was granted. His papers talk about a chest (pulmonary)problem. Nowdays we don't think much about Measles being a really bad disease but it sure was back then. Many of these young soldiers were from farms and therefore not used to living in such close contact so when the measles hit the camp, it spread like wild fire. The men who had no immunity caught it really bad. I have read about this and I believe it. You and I were lucky that our Great Grandfathers were tough enough to survive as so many did not. I can't even find out his parents names but I wish you good luck on yours. Poor man got measles on the barge down to the camp and was disabled the rest of his life. Scott Harrison Thomas was born 11-26-1835 at Pickaway Ohio. He lived in Mt Vernon Iowa at the time of his enlistment. His main claim was that he had impaired sight which is consistent with measles. Any information on parents or siblings would be greatly appreciated. Mary Thomas Wright

    2. CLIFFORD THOMAS
    3. Am looking for birthplace and parents of William Thomas, born 1613. He came to Virginia in Jun-1635 on the America with a certificate from the Minister of the Towne of Gravesend [Kent County, England] of his conformity to the orders and discipline of the Church of England. He was 22 at the time and a Robert, age 20, on the same ship may have been a brother. He lived in Northumberland County, Virginia and acquired numerous land patents prior to his death in 1665. His wife was Rebecca (maiden name unknown) and they had at least one son (John 1648-1710). Glad to exchange information on him and his descendants. Cliff Thomas

    1. Migration of Thomas.
    2. Meade Thomas
    3. In my search for Martin Thomas b circa 1829 in NC, m Eliza McLain abt 1844 (place unknow) it is difficult to trace the time and date of the migration of folks. This couple lived in Louisiana from 1850 until death. However it has been impossible to find a Thomas or McLain line for these folks. The question I have is are there no migrations records that indicate the movement of these people from the Penn., Va. area south and the routes taken on into the west. There has been no problem finding folks born from about 1820 to about 1900, however before that it is really hard to establish records of any type on folks that migrated south and west. There seem to be a route through Tenn>Mo>Ark>Tex and then from VA>NC>SC>GA>Al>MISS>LA>TEX. If anyone has any info on this or can give some method of research that may enlighten people looking for folks in these area I would be greatly appreciated. Searching for more and better records. Thanks. Meade Thomas
