This is the first mention I've noted of a THOMAS connection to CT. I just returned from gene trip to IL where I found James E. THOMAS in LaSalle County (1860 Census) then moving to Vermilion County, Illinois (Land Record dated 8 Sept 1869). Anyone recognize possible connection to any of this THOMAS family~ from 1860 Census: James Thomas, age 38, Farmer, birthyear Abt 1822 in CT wife, Harriet (Edget)Thomas, age 35, birthyear Abt 1825 in CT Ellen Thomas, age 17, b. 9 Apr 1844 in CT James Thomas, age 14/16, b. 1844/46 in CT Frank Thomas, age 11, b.Abt 1849 in CT Lewis Thomas, age 7, b.Abt 1853 in IL Emma Thomas, age 4 b. Abt 1856 in IL My family records also claim a connection to William Penn history, but I've been unable to prove the connection. From my long deceased father[so--heresay]: "THOMAS came to America 1620's and that he had a tract of land next to William Penn.". That's 200 years of CT hx unbeknown to me. I have still been unable to establish the connection. I would appreciate any comments~ Marcia ----- Original Message ----- From: "K Powell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2003 5:11 PM Subject: [THOMAS] Sarah b 1772-80 PA, prnts: Moses THOMAS b 1750 CT, Abigail TYLER b 1753 CT > Does anyone know this THOMAS line? Seeking information on Jeremiah Thomas, place of Birth and parents. Through a lease Jeremiah Thomas of the state of GA, planter, was present in Edgefield County, 96 Dist, SC in Oct 1795. Sold land granted to him in Oct 1794 on Little Steven's Creek and waters of the Savannah River. His name appears on the SC 1800 census. Jeremiah Thomas served in the Revolution during 1778 under a Capt. Anderson Thomas and 1782 under Capt. Robert Frost in SC. Note in the Audited Accounts 7725. I believe he had at least two sons, Joshua, b 1799 and Jeremiah 1800 something. Joshua was my GGGrandfather he is shown in Greene County, in Jones and Gandrud Records on pages 82 & 83, Vol. 94 or 108. My GGrandfather was William A. Thomas born in Green Cty, AL in 1829 and Grandfather was Charles William Thomas b Scooba, Kemper Cty, MS, in 3-10-1863 where he married Sallie Frances Blair in 1890 and moved to Houston, TX where he worked for the Southern Pacific RR. Joshua and Jeremiah were present in Scooba, Kemper Cty, MS, in the mid/late 1800s. Joshua at age 71 married to a Narcissa with a son David on the 1870 census. I have these Thomas's in Texas to date. There was a Josiah (John) Thomas at the Red Bank Baptist church on the little Saluda River in Edgefield Dist before 1792. He was on the 1790 census for Edgefield Dist, SC. Thought these names might be of the same family somehow.

Does anyone know this THOMAS line? Moses was son of Moses b 1720 and Sarah HORTON b 1722, both CT. Moses 1750 d 1779 minisink NY; he or his father was scalped and died. His father was building mills on the Delaware River. http://www.damascustwp.org/briefhistory.html Now, it is Sarah that drew my interest to this family. I've found a record online that she'd married Reuben DECKER b 1775, son of Solomon Decker and Mary Polly Thomas. Another place I found an item saying they had 3 daughters and 3 sons. But I can't find them on census 1800 or later. Did he die, or am I unlucky hunting? I went looking for Sarah because of looking for a Sallie/Sarah born about that time, and finding that her sister Ruth was right amid all my ancestors at Chemung (previously Tioga) County NY, wife of Abraham BARNES. Gray William THOMAS Gray William THOMAS, born 2 Jul 1807 in North Carolina, died 27 February 1874 at Attica, Randolph Co. Arkansas. He is buried in the Thomas Cemetery, Randolph Co. His tombstone states his birth as 1822, however, North Carolina marriage records list his birth as 1807. Based on his marriage and the birth of his children with Esther he would have been a father at age 12 had he been born in 1822. He married, 16 September 1834 in Wake Co. North Carolina, Esther MARSHBOURN born 5 November 1804 in North Carolina, died 1855 Randolph Co. She is buried in the Thomas Cemetery. She is the daughter of Daniel MASHBURN and Delphia WARREN of Wake Co., North Carolina Gray and Esther were the parents of eight children, Mary 1837, William 1839, Robert 1841, Sarah 1842, Joseph 1843, Elizabeth 1843, John 1845, and Samuel 1847. Family tradition says he built the first stone courthouse in Wake Co., North Carolina. Gray and Esther arrived in Randolph Co. before 1850. Gray William married 27 February 1859, Randolph Co. Rebecca Elizabeth MCDANIEL (aka MCDONALD) born 30 March 1834, Lawrence Co. AR., died 9 Jun 1905 at Attica. She is buried in the Thomas Cemetery. They had six children, Augustus 1859 - 1941, Claiborne 1861-1948, Clarry Ann 1863-1948, Manervy 1866-1952, Peter 1868-?, Eliza 1869-1939. Rebecca Elizabeth is the granddaughter of Frederick SMITH, who appears on the Lawrence Co. tax roles as early as 1819. Rebecca's mother, Susannah SMITH born 1817 in Indiana - died after 1890, having married James MCDONALD (MCDANIEL) and producing eleven children. Gray William was a farmer, family man, and conscientious public citizen, called to jury duty 2 Dec. 1873 for the assault and battery case of Mr. Bacon and Mr. James. It seems that Mr. James accosted Mr. Bacon regarding the filing of a lawsuit against Mr. James. Words erupted and a shot was fired. Mr. Bacon having no defense thought that " a good run was better than a bad stand." Both men were arrested and the case went to trial. "The case was delivered without argument, and after a few minutes consultation (the jury) returned the following verdict: "We the jury find the defendant guilty, and assess his fine at 5 cents." -- The above lavish amount goes to swell the school fund." [SRC: Vol. I # 17 of the Observer, (newspaper)] He owned over 300 acres. His home was located on what is now Thomas Rd., Attica. This is the same house occupied by his son Claiborne Jackson, and his sons William and Ervey throughout their lifetime. The property sold in 1982. Tax records indicate that Gray owned horses, mules and cattle. By the detailed description of the livestock on his will it can be assumed he took great pride in his animals. According to other property listed on the will, he also owned sheep, blacksmith tools, woodcutting and land clearing tools, guns, knives, 4 old spades, three augers, and a large wash pot. Any information on the parents of Gray William of his early year prior to Randolph Co. AR would be greatly appreciated. Gava
Alma, I don't know if anyone else answered you on this. I just returned to my computer after 2 weeks of vacation and am still more than a 1000 e-mails behind. The answer to your question about Germanna can be found at: http://www.germanna.com/Germanna.htm and http://www.germanna.org/ There seem to have been some Thomas family members among the 1717 Germanna . I subscribe to the Germanna mail list and thoroughly enjoy the posts even though I am yet to find a real honest to goodness Germanna ancestor. I thought that I had some, but they have proved to be not true Germanna. The area that one finds them in is Orange/Culpeper Counties in Virginia. My guess is that your Isaac Thomas was either among the Thomas family that seems to have been in the Marlborough County area or part of the Thomas family that lived in Newberry County among the Quakers there. I believe that the Marlborough area THomas's had moved there from Maryland. I believe that the Newberry County Thomas's had moved there from Pennsylvania>Hopewell MM near Fredericksburg>North Carolina and South Carolina. I think that the two lines are probably unrelated. Other researchers have indicated that they believe the Pennsyvania Thomas's to have been Welsh while other researchers indicate that they believe the Maryland Thomas line to have come from England. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe your Isaac and Mary to be the well documented family in Hinshaw who have a son that they name Evan along with a son born 1777 that they name Nehemiah....and then twins named Prudence and Sarah who are born in 1781. This family keeps me dreaming that I will be able to connect my Sarah Thomas McKinsey with the Evan Thomas who we find with Alexander Ross at Hopewell MM in the first half of the 1700's. Sarah died before the mass exodus of the Quaker families from the South to Ohio and Indiana and she is buried in the graveyard adjoining the Bush River MM. The rest of her family moved to Warren County, Ohio during the first decade of the 1800's. Abigail Thomas, the widow of Nehemiah Thomas, lived on part of the McKinsey farm and remained close to the McKinsey family further cementing my gut feelings that Sarah was a daughter/niece/sibling of the THomas men who lived first in Newberry County and then later in the southwestern part of Ohio. I do not believe that these people are Germanna. Marsha in WV Alma Robertson wrote: > > Hello, list. > > What is Germanna, or the Germanna colonies, mentioned in recent posts? ... I'm none too sure of the dates but the range is right, and I'm not at all sure of location of her birth, I'll explain further. John HILL 1759-1849 married first Sarah COLYER. It appears she died young and left a young family. Grandmother-lore said that Sallie THOMAS raised Sackett Hill b. 1799. I'll have to describe John Hill's life and travels to describe where Sallie fit in. John was born in what was Ulster County NY, birth registered at 1759 Kingston Dutch Reformed Church. Later his father John probably had not moved from Wallkill, but southern Ulster County was lopped off about 1798 and added to Orange County, thus census changed to show Orange. John m Colyer 1782. His 1849 will documents named (1st) four children - Hugh 1793, Deborah 1794, Sackett 1799 and Anna (Fanny) 1802. Children of Sallie Thomas were Joseph b 1807, Morris b 1812, possibly Abner b 1812 of whom I know nothing, and Jemima b. 1811. Here is 1800 census: 1800 > New York > ORANGE > WALLKILL Series: M32 Roll: 21 Page: 339 John HILL Jr 2..1.|211.... (near brother Caleb) John age over 45 + two boys and two girls under 10 and one girl between the ages of 16 and 25; woman over 26 under 45. John Sr lives near Tilton, also at Wallkill. There should be a 3rd daughter but John's 1849 will names only 2. I estimate that John and Sallie married after 1800 or after 1802, and by 1807. John was one of the earlier families settling the part of Tioga County NY which later became Chemung County. A look at the family 1820: 1820 U.S. Census New York Tioga Spencer John HILL 21.2.1|111.1.|3 Abner FLANDERS 1...1.|1.1...|... John SHOEMAKER .1..1.|11.1..|1.. (John is over 45, Sallie 26-45, making Sallie's birth year 1776-1794) John and Sallie have 5 boys at home and 3 girls, Deborah is next door married to Abner FLANDERS and Fannie is married to Peter WESTBROOK. Jemima (who may be named for her THOMAS grandmother) is still at home -- and there are 2 other little girls not named later in John's will. 5 boys - that accounts for them all, if Abner existed; he may have died young or run off to the '49er CA goldfields. John's son Sackett, my ancestor, was enumerated 1850 at Cayuta near his father and brother Hugh, and it was stated by the enumerator that he was born Chemung. I don't know if that was an error told him by a family member, nor if it implied he was born Chemung town 1799 when what became Tioga County was still Montgomery County (which means his father returned to Wallkill briefly), or the part of Tioga County that became Chemung. Back to Sallie. Some time between about 1835 - 1845 sons Joseph and Morris emigrated to Carmi Co, IL. John's 1849 will documents state that 15 years earlier, his 3rd wife Elizabeth UNKN and he separated via "anti nuptual", thus 1834. So let's say Sallie died between 1828 - 1833, about when her sons left for IL. This covers about all I know about Sallie. Around 1800 her family lived either at Orange/Ulster County area, or Tioga, maybe Broome County, NY. I have not found a burial for her, either. I've speculated that according to naming customs of the time her father may have been a Joseph THOMAS, her mother likely Jemima. Can you help me place Sallie with a family, please?
