Hello all. I have a Carrol Thomas married to a Nancy Pendleton, both from TN. They are found in the 1870 Census for Spring Creek, Howell County, Missouri. Polly Pendleton, in the 1870 census that was living with them, states that she was born in PA. I think that Polly was probably Nancy's mother, as she was 69 and Nancy was 39. However, I do not know how the Dillard Pendleton that was 9 years old that lived with the Thomas's was related to them. The 1880 Census for South Fork, Howell County, Missouri, states that Carrol's mother and father were born in Virginia. It states that Nancy Pendleton's father was born in TN. Another thing or few. Apparently there were a *lot* of black Isham Thomases in GA early 1800s and then again later in the Alachua County FL. Another bit of lore I picked up (commonsense historically) for the couple I researched for my niece was made plain in the father's will - bequesting slaves and livestock. Those 2 young men mentioned at the end of the Isham B Thomas 1860 census, Isham and Ivey (name it looked like to me) may possibly have been mulatto slaves or even by an indian mother. By their ages my 1st instinct is to take them as sons or at least nephews of Isham. I gave a cursory, quick shot at trying to find them on 1850 under surnames Thomas and Wiggins, no luck. I'd thought maybe if their mother died, her parents or siblings took on those 2 boys while the papa got re-married and settled. I did not look for Wiggins outside of GA to AL AR MS, the next moves on the migration route from that time/place. OK, what I have to offer isn't Thomas-specific. I researched another surname from about same time and place, so I learned a bit of the migration pattern and local history. It may be stuff you've already learned. This other surname came from NC right around 1800 as did many that intermarried, the only exception some surprise Irish-born wives and an English-born farm owner. No surprise, plenty of THOMAS in NC then, too. This specific research couple also went to FL before the 1860 census. There were land lotteries going on in GA which is why folks moved around, if their names didn't get drawn on that area's particular lottery, they moved to another area and tried again. And of course new generations kept maturing and repeating the pattern. Thomas (or Isom, Isam, Isum, etc.) was probably born in the Bulloch County, GA area about 1803. He married Mary Ulmer in Decatur County, GA in 1846 and the family migrated from Lowndes County, GA to Alachua County, FL about 1850-51. Isham died in Alachua County in 1868 followed by Mary in 1873. I have not been able to identify Isham's or Mary's parents. Isham and Mary had 10 children and the children's family lines include Campbell, Cato, Fugate, Hawkins, Pike, and perhaps Shaw in addition to Thomas. Now, I have tried to do this before, but don't know if I really helped anybody or not. I have a bunch of Thomas marriages in various counties in Alabama that were sent to me, plus a number of Amanda Thomas marriages. Apparently, there were quite a few Amanda Thomases in Alabama way back. Even I had one, as my great grandmother on my mother's side was an Amanda M. Thomas, born in about 1833/34 in Harris Co., GA. Actually, she was Amanda M. Brown before marriage. But after her husband, John Q. Thomas' death in 1864, I was wondering if she ever got remarried; thus, the reason for my having been sent a list of Amanda Thomas marriages. I don't know if this will be any help at all, but I looked up Dyke Morrison Thomas on Ancestry and got the following off the 1930 census: At that time this person lived in Willoughby, Lake Co., Ohio. Dyke M. Thomas. age 41 b. Iowa, father born in Iowa, mother born in Ohio. Wife Florance J. b. Iowa, her father born in Missouri, her mother born in Indiana Children: Mable age 19 b. Iowa Cleo age 17, b. Iowa Dyke Jr., age 7, b. Iowa I know it doesn't jive with your Dyke being born in PA, and I don't know what your range of dates would be, but thought I would send it along anyway. Good luck with your search. I'm looking for information about Joseph Thomas believed to have been born in Wales, went to England, was a coachman and eloped with Harriet Ann Wilson, who was the daughter of the Manor, they came to New Zealand in 1875 with 2 of their many children, William aged 2 and John Henry aged 1.
