Hi all, With 27 individuals initially interested in participating, the Thomas DNA Project is launched. The project number has been assigned and we have our information for ordering the test kit. If you have not let me know of your interest, drop me a line and I'll send what you need to join the group. If you need additional information about the project, I'd love to hear from you. Bonnie Thomas Chaffin [email protected]
There were 146,425 persons with Thomas surname on the 1880 US census. But, that's probably only about 30- or 40,000 households. Ahhh the power of computers! Some posts recently reminded me of a project I'd participated in for surname SACKETT. Parts of it are applicable to THOMAS. We chose the 1880 US census since it is every-person indexed. Those of us who participated own the 50-cd 1880 census index. We broke it up into states and other divisions. Each person made a list of every sackett surname in their section. For Sacket, we also chose any given name with Sacket/sackett in it (the program looks at any close spellings automagically.) Thomas alas would have to settle for surname only. OK, there was a project director to whom we sent all these lists to, email. The 1880 has lots of info, and to find where everly last Thomas in the US was at that particular time was a great building project. Again, it takes a web page to access. The web page was made searchable. You could select what seems most important, name of course, or by state-county-town. I don't recall if by age, but why not! I don't know what it would take to code for a bracketed age-in-1880 though, because that one's not always so easy to get exact. Would you believe, the few of us participating submitted the whole project in one week. Now the bad part - the project manager had to do all the real work. All us volunteers had to do was sort, copy, paste. Gah - it sounds like grad student imperative: publish publish publish. I don't have a Sackett though so I didn't see through to the end of the program. Kaye in Texas PS There were 403 persons with the given name Elvis in 1880 US. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Sam, Thanks for the good work. Rex Jones Carissa, Good idea. Rex Jones
Beginning last weekend, I undertook the task of locating every THOMAS buried in the four subject counties born before 1900. Of course, the collection started with the cemeteries in the west corner of Laurens Co., Montrose to Dudley, as I was in searching of my g-g-g grandfather, CHARNAL H. THOMAS [born 1827] and his father WILLIAM L. THOMAS [born 1789]. In the search, I found more unmarked graves with a concrete cover or simple head & foot markers. In one cemetery, I'll call it the JONES CEMETERY as it appeared to be predominantly JONES, there were about 20 concrete covered gravesites located out in the wood line at the back of the cemetery. On clearing debris from the covers, no markings were found on the covers to indicate who these people were. The front area seems to be well-kept. The cemetery is located at the Haskins Crossing / SR26 exit off of I16, to the north of I16, on the first paved road to the left, within 1 mile of I16. An occupied house sits directly across the road from the cemetery, which is on the south-side [left travel west] of the roadway. We plan to going back down, do a little work to clear the site and try to determine who these people were. Anyone from the local area in Laurens Co., GA have any ideas? Hi all, I am writing the list to let everyone know that we are ready to get ourselves registered as a group project. At the moment I have 22 interested in participation. Several have voted for the 25 marker test. Most have not voiced an opinion but I think we can select individually as we order the kit. Rich Thomas has graciously volunteered to setup our THOMAS DNA web site. He & I have emailed back and forth and he has some very good ideas. We want the site to be informative yet easy to use so that our group as well as future Thomas researchers will find help. Another thing which was mentioned to me is a fund or contributions from anyone who would like to help financially for anyone who may want to participate but has limited funds. Because we "cousins" do not all know each other, I will handle those requests privately and just try to put people in touch with each other. Thank you to those who have volunteered to help. I have created a separate mail list for those 22 Thomas cousins who have expressed interest in participating. I have done that so that I can communicate what is happening with the testing process without loading down the THOMAS-L list. If you would like to be on that list, let me know. [email protected]
Hey everyone, When we send something to the list, how about we use subject lines that help others know what first names, dates and/or places we're searching for or have info on . . . that way we can all have an idea about the content of the message without actually having to open every message. There are so many of them on here just labelled "Thomas" which is a bit redundant since this is a listserv specifially for the Thomas surname. So anyways, just a thought, what do you guys think? Thanks for listenin' !! Carissa
To make a fairly short story run a little longer, I ran across a Thomas last night that seemed interesting. Imagine - a *found* Thomas instead of lost. http://www.greatvalleyhouse.com/ click history link in the frame at left. I was thinking maybe to make a genealogy trip to Valley Forge some time and this place was shown as a close-by B&B. Scroll down near the end, just below the last photo. May be a quaker Thomas. There's a nice bit of documentation there if he's yours. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Shopping - with improved product search http://shopping.yahoo.com
Let me jump in here, too.........as I am a Thomas, my father was Edward S. Thomas, his father was William G. Thomas, born in Harlan Co ( I believe) and his father was Henry Clay Thomas, and I am not sure but I have it that his father was a William Thomas of Yocums Creek, Ky.......Anyone know of this line of Thomas.......I remember hearing that a lot of them went out West (Calif.) ...way back. Oh, William G. Thomas, was born, Sept.18, 1871. Shirley Thomas Otero [email protected]
Arthur Thomas, b. May 1863 in England, immigrated in 1886 to New York State. He married Louise King, b. September 1870 in England, immigrated in 1883. This couple, Arthur and Louise King Thomas, had four children, all b. in New York State. Edna, or Lillie Edna, b. 1889; Amary H., b. 1891; Grace, b. 1893; and Hazel A., b. 1896. Is anyone on this list familiar with any of this Thomas family? I'd appreciate hearing from you.
I don't know where in Ohio, which is part of the problem. :) I;ll let you know when I find out ... My ancestor, John W Thomas, was born circa 1840 in Ohio. He moved to Effingham, Illinois (unk date), where he married Rebecca Getz. They had several schildren in Illinois, then moved to Kansas. Their youngest child, my grandmother, was born approx 1889. Her name was Cora Lee Thomas. Is it possible the John W in your family, born in Ohio 1844, is the same as in my family line? Barbara, Where in Ohio? My Anthony THOMAS and wife, Isabella, were at Bedford, Cuyahoga Co., in 1850. Also--don't let Hugh's birthplace of "VA" throw you into thinking further south, because the present WV panhandle area between PA and OH was VA before 1863, and both Brooke and Hancock counties, VA/WV were major migration routes westward into OH. There are no male descendants of Jesse E. Thomas, my ggggrandfather.. my hope is that I can definitely connect to some of the people researching the Thomas families in northern Florida in the 1800's. and that they will participate...I have several possibilities...I will not give up in my desire to research this family and I hope others in the same situation will feel the same way.....I wish all of you who participate in the DNA project much success and I will hope to see those who can't, still active on the Thomas list Sandy Ambrose
Hi Wayne, I think the answer to that is that we don't know. There could be a connection between your line and mine, for instance. I have been unable to learn anything earlier than my George Thomas b. 1781 in (probably) upper east Tenn. It isn't a great stretch to guess that George's family may have been in Virginia, but I've got nothing to direct me to any particular family or any particular area of VA. I think this is the very thing that makes the testing helpful. We will hopefully find connections between researched lines that no one previously suspected were related. I am lost in Tennesse. There are so many Jacob Thomas's a DNA sounds like a good idea. Put me down as interested. My Jacob Thomas married Mary Callahan in Jefferson County. His father, Jacob Thomas married Elizabeth Hanger also in Jefferson County. Bob Thomas
