    3. I recently had a question about the arrival of the Orphan. Here is what I found so it will be in TSL archives. Orphan is not a useful search key on a genealogy newsgroup :-) Arrival report New York Times October 15 1853 Arrived New York October 14 Ship Orphan, [captain] Williams, Bremen Sept 1, 280 passengers to [agent] Poppe & Co. Vessel to [owner] Wm. Tyson. The O had four deaths and one birth on the passage, Sept. 6 passed Fair Island, in company with ship G. Green, of New-Orleans, bound W. It was unusual to list both agent and owner but I have seen it before. Fair Isle is between the Orkney and Shetland Islands (at least one emigrant ship ran into it) so the ship took the northern passage, north of Scotland, rather than sailing down the North Sea and through the English Channel. The Orphan was built in Essex, Connecticut in 1845. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------
