Those who arrived later than 1906 were required. Therefore, for the pre-1906 immigrants, in the case of people naturalizing at a much later date, they could say . . well, I believe it was . . Usually the ship name was pretty well remembered, as was the port of arrival and most often month date of arrival. The biggest casualty was quite often the year of arrival. Anecdotally I have seen a 3 year memory lapse <smile> but in this case it looks like a minumum of two-three years. The Canopic of White Star Line was ex- Commonwealth of Dominion Line . . http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsC.html . . and I note the curiosity of the Commonwealth arriving at Boston on October 18th 1901, but from Liverpool. It is unlikely she would have referred to her arrival ship by a name that it didn't carry before November 1903. I looked at the Boston October arrivals for CANOPIC for 1904, 1905, 1906 and they were all from Mediterranean ports, but arrived at Boston on either the 1st or 2nd of the month. What was her name and age at emigration? btw. there were _no_ ships sailing from Mediterranean ports to Boston before 1902 (Dominion Line) and no White Star Line ships into Boston before 1903, regardless of port(s) of departure or ship name.
