Hi I wonder if you would be able to help me or give me any advice please? My g.grandfather I am told was a ship's captain for the Donaldson Line. Possibly in the 1880's and 1890's (as he is supposed to have had a daughter born on sea in about 1889/90 or 91). His name was Francis/Frank Courtney (McCourtney). He lived in Greenock most of the time. I haven't been able to find the birth at sea (apparently according to stories on the equator) nor anything that tells me that Francis was indeed a Ship's Captain! I can't find him or his family in 1891 so wondered if he was at sea and if there was a census taken at sea? He had at least one daughter "adopted" by a ships engineer called James McKenzie but I can't find anything on him or his wife Jessie at all! Please are you able to help at all? Are there any records for the Donaldson Line that would list ship's captains or the crew? Would they have kept records of births at sea? So many questions... I look forward to hearing from you, with thanks
