From the NY Marine Register, 1858 Cambria, 1187 tons, [captain] Perry, built Bath, Maine, 1854, owned R. Morse & Sons, Bath, Maine I read the passenger count as 688 rather than 888, although it was unclear (NYT, September 14). Ships in 1854 carried huge, undoubtedly unsafe, numbers of passengers. I checked the New York Times to see whether there was any comment on a ship from Stockholm, a port not usually used by emigrants, but didn't find any. A passage of 43 days from Stockholm to New York by sailing ship was very good going. As for the Cunard liner Cambria, the Cunard liners carried mail and saloon passengers only - this ultimately left the emigrant steamship market open to Inman and other lines. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------
