It was a big rail hub. It probably took him a couple of days total to Detroit. Depending on when his ship arrived and the train left, it was likely just an overnight to Montreal . . less than one day rail travel (588 miles . . 940 km by road) I think the immigrant trains (those which connected with the ships) probably travelled straight through, rather than the regular trains stopping at lots of stations.
