"Don Hazeldine" <don.hazeldine@virgin.net> posted on behalf of Diane Deagle at mapadeagle@shaw.ca (edited): Diane Deagle (mapadeagle@shaw.ca) asks about the family-Bergsveinn Jonsson, wife Sesselja Jonsdottir and 4 children, Margret, Jon, Kristjan and Dadi (their last name was Bergsveinson/Bergsveinsdottir) who emigrated from Iceland to Winnepeg in 1888. Diane would like to know the transatlantic ship, probably 1888 Sue Swiggum suggested the Allan Line Norwegian and asked if they lost a son on the voyage: Reel Number Ship Name Departure Information Arrival Information Shipping Line Special Group(s) Remarks C-4536 NORWEGIAN Glasgow, Scotland 1888-06-29 Quebec, Que. 1888-07-08 (MTL) Montreal Ocean Steamship Company (Allan Line) (O): Icelanders (319) List Number: 38; Captain Robert Carruthers; death at sea: [Emily?] July 7th 1888 & [?] July 6th 1888 & Svienn Bergsvensson [sic], 3 1/2 months July 5th 1888; faded manifest I have confirmed this ship. I found the passenger list on C-4536; it varies from illegible to quite good; fortunately this family is quite good :-) Here is my transcription of the family. Ticket 551 Bergsvein Jonson, Farmer 44 (Male) Silsityr [Sesselja] Jonsdottir, 35 (Female) Mars [Margret] " 11, F Jon " 7, M Kirstyan [Kristjan] 3, M Ladi [Dadi] 1, M Svein, Inf (no sex noted) The other two children who died on the Norwegian are marked Died at Sea against their unclear names; but in another place on the manifest is a clear note that Svein Bergsveinnson Died at Sea July 5, age 3 1/2 months, but nothing is written against his name. I was able to confirm the death from the Board of Trade Register of Deaths at Sea: Bergsveinnson Svein, 3 1/2 months, Icelandic, from Dala County, Iceland Died from Marasmus, 5.7.88, SS Norwegian, Official Number 51476 The record didn't note his parents. Marasmus is wasting of the body. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------
